The largest building in the world was paid for in cash

He paid for that in all cash. Let me
walk you through it. Warworth built this
entire tower in cash and he spent less
than what one penthouse apartment would
sell for now. On the west side of
Broadway between Barkley and Parkplace,
you will find the Woolworth building,
once the tallest building in the world.
The building was paid for by businessman
Frank Winfield Woolworth back in 1913.
For at the time 13.5 million, no
mortgage, all cash. often referred to as
FW. Woolworth used most of his fortune
to build this 60story building. He was
best known as a pioneer for creating the
five and dime store Woolworth that
eventually became Walcut as he looked to
compete with Sam Walton who was building
out Walmart and winning over America
with that lowpric model. The Wworth
Company held the building for 85 years
eventually selling it in 1998 for $155
million. Adjust for inflation today and
that's now roughly $317 million. It
stood as the tallest building for about
17 years. That is until 40 Wall Street
was built in 1930. And that building is
actually now the Trump building. The
downfall for Wworth all happening really
quickly with Walmart taking its spot in
the Dow in March of 1997.
And that's about 4 months before the
last store closed.
