Ex-BuzzFeeders Spill Tea While Playing With Puppies

First person to get on wins $10 from the
other.
>> Sure, I'll take that as well.
>> If one of us gets on 10 bucks.
>> So if you get on, you win the money.
>> If you get on, you win the money. But
the other two
>> times are tough. Daddy needs dinner.
>> Hi, I'm Chris.
>> Hey, I'm Ryan.
>> Hi, I'm Zach.
>> And today we're going to answer some
questions and play with some puppies.
>> Puppies.
>> How does it feel to be back at the feed?
>> It feels great. kind of like going back
to your high school, but your high
school is in a completely different
place. And you're walking around and
some people are like, "You're still
here."
>> They told me to sit in a green room. And
I was like, "No, I'm gonna walk around.
>> I'm going to see what the kitchen
situation's like."
>> I feel bad for the puppies. If I was a
puppy, like, I'm going to do another
interview today. I'm going to see
someone supering famous. And then you
come in, you see us three, and it's a
real wet blanket.
>> That puppy's expecting Sydney Sweeney.
>> What are these guys names? Oh my gosh,
there's more. Hi.
Hi. This one's name is Bruce.
>> I'm Sydney.
>> Oh, hi.
>> Don't creep out the bunnies.
>> Puppies.
>> They're like, "No, Sweenie. I'm out,
bro."
>> Yeah, they know.
>> Bad Bunny.
>> There's no Tom Hanks here. How
>> you're going to be Bad Bonnie.
>> This is a funnier bit. I think it's a
better video if the puppies don't
interact with us.
>> I just want a puppy so bad.
>> I got to Buzzfeed by way of internship.
I was like 3 weeks postgrad from
college. We had this like last little
wrap-up thing and I crashed it.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> Oh no.
>> I saw that video. What video?
>> Like don't you talk about that. 3 weeks.
That's crazy luck. I had made a video
where I crashed an assembly as like
power line from a Goofy movie. And so
like that got on to BuzzFeed. I saw that
they were had interns. I didn't even
know Buzzfeed video was a thing. And the
only reason why I got my job was because
in college I worked at a Joe's Crab
Shack and the recruiter also worked at a
Joe's Crab Shack in college. We talked
about that for 25 minutes of the 30
minutes and I I got in.
>> I was uh acting doing comedy in LA.
Somebody I did improv with was named
Justin Abarka. He was a writer for
BuzzFeed. He said, "Go to
buzzfeed.com/job."
I came in to apply for a head producer.
And they were like, "You don't even know
how to work a camera or edit." So they
said, "We're thinking about doing this
new thing called a fellow." They had me
interview with a different person,
Hillary Lavine. and she walked out and
went that guy's ETF down to fellow.
>> I knew Shantel Houston in college and I
knew she worked here and she had
mentioned oh there's an intern program
you should apply. So I applied for that
I was making corporate videos for this
video production company
>> for Joe's Crab Check
>> for Joe's Crab Check. But no, actually
what I was doing is I was filming
professors or giving, you know, like uh
PowerPoint presentations on like
irritable bowel syndrome and stuff like
that at USC. And I was filming
commencement ceremonies. My job was to
be the close-up cam and I was very far
back and I was supposed to get the
footage of when they would shake the the
the dean's hand and they got their
diploma. I was so nervous and the camera
was shaking. I was like, "Oh my god, I'm
ruining it." And uh they called me into
the office and they were like, "Yeah,
this footage is unusable."
>> And then he got hired at BuzzFeed to
>> do camera.
telling people I worked at BuzzFeed.
>> Just kidding. No, I was actually very
proud. I I was actually the opposite. I
was like, "Do you know who I am?" Look,
it was always embarrassing when
especially like being a fellow and you
were essentially going through this
internet film school making videos that
you're putting up weekly and being
judged like if the video performed well
or not. And and your your balance is
like if the video hits a million views
or doesn't. I'm sure I have a laundry
list of videos that I'm like why did I
do that?
>> So many videos I did chasing those
views. I made like three would you
rather videos that were like would you
rather go on a date with Ariel or
someone like this and then like those
videos killed and I died a little inside
when I pressed upload but then I saw the
views and I was like oh baby Buzzfeed
you needed to get views to advance to
the next level from intern to fellowship
to junior producer and I was like I am
not getting cut. I will make 18 would
you rather videos before I get cut. But
embarrassing. No, I mean I I'm with you
on like sometimes when a video wouldn't
perform and you thought it was going to
perform well.
>> Well, you said that you love telling
people you worked at BuzzFeed. I didn't.
But you have this thing when you work at
Buzzfeed is everybody thinks they went
to high school with you. You're not like
famous from being on a movie screen. You
show up on people's Facebooks. So
they're like, "Why do I know you?" And I
still go, "I don't know. Where did you
go to high school?" Because one time I
was like, it might just be I do things
on the internet. They're like like what?
I was like, I'm I'm on BuzzFeed. And
they were like,
>> no, I don't watch Buzzfeed.
>> That's so funny.
>> And it was the most embarrassing thing
that's ever happened to me and I've
never done it again.
>> Old City Jail in Charleston. I mean,
there's
>> What made you super scared about it?
>> That place was just so gnarly. The
history was awful. Normally on these
shoots, things don't really happen when
you're on location. So, when it go comes
time to do the solo, I could kind of
like live in the like, okay, not much
has happened tonight. But this
particular night, a lot of things
happened. I think I had like a psychic
break because I don't remember some of
it.
>> Did it hit you immediately or did it
like
>> No, I just remembered thinking like
there was one point where I was like,
man, I could feel my heart beating so
hard and fast. They closed the door and
then I heard Shane laughing on the other
side of the door and I wanted so badly
just to be like, I'm not doing this. I'm
going out. But I had to stay there for
20 minutes. And I think the only thing I
could do to make myself feel better was
to just be crazy. Because I remember my
mom once told me like people don't want
to fight a crazy person. So I was like,
"All right, I'll just be a crazy
person." And I think I was like barking
like a dog at one point.
>> So cute. Look at it. Doesn't man or
something.
>> Let me see. He kind of looks like Sir
Ian Mckllen.
>> Ian Mckllen watching this. Hey,
>> that's a compliment. Huge compliment.
>> I want to do the puppy video.
>> I'm sure he would be great with puppies.
I would watch that video. My soul is
trapped
inside this puppy.
I always remember there was one day at
Buzzfeed where I was making a summer
hacks video. I'm making a sprinkler.
There's a bunch of puppies. Zach and
Keith like walked by in some crazy
costume. I walk into another studio and
there's interns on ladders throwing
glitter while Eugene like pushes a
camera in. Chaos, chaos, chaos. And then
I walk in another back room and there's
just Kevin McShane with a top- down
setup of an iPhone just all alone. And
it was just to me it's like that moment
is so like Buzzfeed with the puppies and
costumes and glitter and people and and
then just one person. I mean the coolest
thing about BuzzFeed was it was like a
very open seating area and every day you
went to work there was some weird crazy
that was going down. Like I
remember I made an IV therapy video
where people where nurses came in and
administered IVs to me and three other
people in the middle of the office. In
the background people are just hammering
out a video to get it out in time.
>> Anytime someone asked me what was it
like working at BuzzFeed? I go exactly
what you think. It was it was there was
bean bags, there was puppies, there's
kombucha. You're walking in thinking
you're getting sushi for lunch and it's
the try guys naked and you're like
should have known. Some of the craziest
stuff would be like getting called into
taste test and you'd be like, "We're
going to do a moonshine taste test and
it's 10 o'clock in the morning and you
do it and you're coming back to your
desk and you're still expected to do
your work."
>> Actually, no, wait. The day that I saw
somebody walking through the middle of
the office with a cup of your own piss
and cuz they're going to the drink your
own piss taste test. That
>> was a tough day.
>> It was an open container. Actually, I
would say rewatch the dog food taste
test. I think which I think was your
video.
>> The entire time it keeps cutting to me
just going, "What are we doing?
>> What the are we doing?" It was
like, "We tried Korean snacks and we
tried British candy and you were like,
"People taste dog food." I was like,
"But but we don't eat dog food. It's dog
food. It tastes like dog food."
>> Oh, celeb collabs at Buzzfeed. I mean,
look, I'm always going to remember Jack
Black coming. Jack Black just impressed
me so much. It was also very fun to
perform with him and improvise with him
and stuff.
>> I was expecting you about the Logan
Paul.
>> Oh, I also Oh, I also had Logan Paul
come into the office. That's not a
favorite.
>> No, no, no, no.
>> I met Logan Paul at a party. I said,
"Hey, make videos for BuzzFeed. Uh, come
on in one day." And he showed up on a
hoverboard with his manager, which was
also very like odd to us. We didn't work
with a lot of like managers. I kind of
gave him a tour of the office, but he
was on the hoverboard the whole time.
And all he was doing was talking to his
manager about his AT&T brand deal. His
manager wanted to talk to me about the
type of money that BuzzFeed was making.
And like, and I'm like, honestly, I
don't know.
>> Let me see your books.
>> And I don't know what kind of money we
make. Granted, Logan was 22, probably
dealing with a lot of fame things and
whatnot, but it was enough offputting to
me where I didn't want to uh give him a
platform. And then he never got a
platform. I'm just kidding.
I loved filming all of the trailers that
Chris was also a part of. It was like
the most fun. You know what? Actually,
I'm going to change that answer. My
favorite video that we ever filmed, but
it also involves Chris was this video
called Finger Guns.
>> Oh my god, I love finger guns.
>> Finger guns. And I remember we shot this
at like 400 p.m. on a Friday and we just
had an idea like what if we just got
caught in a finger gun match and then it
turns real and serious and someone's
getting held hostage and like we did
this whole whole thing and it was just
you, me, and Justin.
>> It was like an idea that like we like
kind of almost like it was like an
improv scene shot but it was really fun.
>> And I just remember the the sun was
going down. We were losing light. It was
a Friday. We're having our interns help
us and that was just pure fun with like
a Mexican standoff. And then all of a
sudden Justin gets shot and we're like,
"What?" And then we turn around and
Quint is there and she hits.
>> Yeah. That was one of those days though
where you like drive home and you're
like, "I have the best job in the
world." Like it was like I got to have
fun with my friends and we recorded it
and we'll see how this does.
>> I just rewatched uh you and Justin's
Airbud video. The kid who didn't get in
the game because Airbud got in the game.
It's like authentically dramatic.
>> So good. I was benched for a golden
retriever named Buddy.
>> What?
>> Yeah. Like there's an actual dog on my
JV basketball team and he starts ahead
of me.
>> How anytime someone's like, "You know
what video? I really like the underrated
one. That Airbud one, it just it makes
me feel good." I never had a bad day
shooting videos with Justin, Quinta,
Chris, like it was just it was a dream
come true.
I miss you, man. What are you doing?
Justin liv not to put him on blast.
Actually, no. Do it.
>> Thank you, Buzzfeed, for having us in
here to meet all these these fun little
guys. You could actually adopt any of
these puppies by going to Positive
Beginnings uh and help find these folks
some homes.
>> It's positive beginnings.
>> It's a pun.
These babies are all available for
adoptions.
>> They're all sleeping now. You get a
recommendation. My newest thing is I
directed a little short movie called Fly
Me to the Earth. You can find it on
That's a Bad Ideas channel or my own
channel, Chris Riner. Uh
>> you can find me on youtube.com/watcher.
We're shooting ghost files and releasing
an episode of that every month where we
ghost hunt.
>> I wrote a book with my wife that is out
everywhere April 14th called Create
Repeat 365 days of creativity. It's not
funny.
>> I bet you can make funny things with it.
>> You for sure can. It's supposed to
inspire you. So,
>> and if you wind up getting one of these,
comment below and we will name your
puppy
>> or you have to name it one of us.
