Work & Play: The Samsung Odyssey 57” G9 Monitor after 130 Days
234 segments
okay so right now I'll be talking about
the Samsung Odyssey g95 7 in I've been
using this for about 150 days now which
is like 4 months honestly doing
long-term reviews are kind of difficult
for me if I had like really big nitpicks
or there are certain things I didn't
like about anything I would have just
returned it by now and also some of the
things I was really love with initially
the novelty has worn off by now so all
I'm left with is just this monitor being
a part of my life and as a tool so I
guess that could be a good thing that's
mostly what I use this for it's a tool
to get things done and it's a gaming
monitor on the side so before I get into
anything let's get the build out of the
way it's made out of mostly glossy
plastic and I know that might sound like
a bad thing but I think it's to reduce
weight it weighs 41 lbs and this thing
was a nightmare picking it up from Best
Buy taking it up my stairs and getting
it set up on my desk and by the way I'm
going to have affiliate links from Best
Buy and Amazon if you are interested in
picking this monitor up and especially
as of right now it's on sale for 28% %
off it's essentially two high-end
monitors attached to one and most High
Caliber 4K monitors go for $11,000 each
anyway the G9 OLED was made out of metal
and that felt a bit more premium but I
like the way this 57 in looks with this
glossy white exterior looks futuristic
the stand is standard and it's massive
it takes up a lot of space it made me
have to buy a brand new desk to
accommodate this Monitor and one thing I
don't like is the cable management is
bad
but there's only a rubber strap at the
back to feed cables through and it
doesn't really do a great job of hiding
cables but it's also vase am mountable
too if you're able to find a monitor arm
that supports the size and weight of
this monitor next let's look at the menu
it's simple regular monitor stuff but
what I really like is there is no Tien
I've used lots of other Samsung monitors
that have a TV like OS and it's really
annoying for a computer monitor I just
want on and off and regular picture
settings not all these submenus and apps
and services and with Ty in something as
simple as switching inputs is buried in
so many different menus I hated those
including the G9 OLED monitor there's
also a really cool picture by picture
mode where you can have two different
sources side by side so the this monitor
is essentially two 32in 4K monitors
that's just kind of fused together so
it's perfect for that I haven't really
used that feat of those since I don't
really have a use case for it I usually
just use this monitor for my 9 to5 job
and at night time I'm using my personal
laptop to game edit photos and create
these videos here on YouTube so let's
talk about what it's like to use this
monitor in three different scenarios
both working a corporate 9o5 job content
creation for these YouTube videos photo
and video editing and third gaming of
course so first my 9 to5 I'm an
accounting manager for a large company
so I'm usually reviewing large
spreadsheets financial statements emails
Etc so having this extra Ultra wide
monitor has been essential for my
productivity during my 9 to5 the amount
of time I used to spend out tabing
between different Windows apps and
scrolling up and down and even left or
right for larger files things that used
to take me like half a day to do I can
now do it like 2 hours or so and it's
really because of this extra screed real
estate there's just nothing else like it
in the market right now so I mean
honestly this is a product ity monitor
disguised as a gaming Monitor and it's
better than dual monitors because you
can span apps across the entire wide
screen and you don't have to worry about
dragging different apps or different
Windows across screens you just move it
exactly to where you need it to and
especially when I'm using creative apps
like Adobe Premiere So speaking of which
let's just jump into what makes this
monitor great for Content creation as
well I can have a 20 minute long
timeline viewable on this monitor
without having to scroll around my
entire media library two clips and
there's even more room to spare if I
wanted to I'm jumping through way less
menus throughout my entire video
creation process and the fact that the
resolution is 7680 by 2160 editing
photos in Lightroom or photoshop look
really sharp too it's one thing that was
lacking on many of the other OLED
ultrawide monitors that I've had before
and to bounce back to productivity as
well because of the screen being so
pixel dense there's no weird sub pixel
layout like on most oleds and text and
numbers look really crisp and easy to
read as well too so now let's talk about
gaming when you're gaming unless you're
sitting back your eyes aren't seeing
this entire wide screen so pixels are
being wasted and there isn't any kind of
full vated rendering so your computer is
always pushing 4K resolution two times
always and it takes a really big hit on
your frame rate so you need a beastly
machine to run it so right now I would
recommend either a 4080 or a 4090
desktop card to really make use of the
screen if not you're just going to take
two big of a hit on frames and to a lot
of people that might not be worth it
even the RTX 490 on a laptop chugs along
in some games unless you start to lower
some of the settings like I mentioned
another issue is most games just don't
support 32 by9 so the sides look very
stretched out but thankfully like I
mentioned since it's in your peripheral
you're not really looking there but if
you're you're able to get past some of
these caveats I think you're in for a
treat it's a mini LED panel with over
2,000 dimming zones and yes I counted
them an HDR with over a th000 nits of
peak brightness I'll get to measurements
in a second but there is some blooming
and there is flicker when the dimming
zones are turned on you can turn them
off for a flicker-free experience so
this is especially great again coming
back to productivity tasks so now let's
get into the measurements you're not
getting the highest color gamut like you
would with cutie ola or OLED in general
I'm a bit shocked that we're not able to
get 100% of dcip 3 only 92 and this is
based off of my own measurements and
I've compared with others on the
internet and that's it that's that's
just what we're all getting I measured
on Max brightness with the native color
spectrum in the settings not the end of
the world though I've been able to
produce every single YouTube video that
I've done for the past four months on
this just fine photographers though you
may want to take a look at the Adobe RGB
gamut it's only 855 it might not be
enough for some of you but this monitor
has been great for gaming movies and
prer level content creation I think if I
was to get really serious about editing
HDR videos or I was going to start
editing like an Oscar award noteworthy
type of video production then maybe I
might not want to use this monitor just
but for the level of work that I do it's
been fine so max brightness and SDR is
973 and I was able to get over 1,000 in
HDR 973 n is just way too bright even a
daytime with my window right in front of
me it's still too bright honestly I'm
never using more than 48% brightness so
now let's look at contrast it's almost
22,000 to1 with local dimming but
without local dimming and also no
flicker it's 2600 to1 so it's a really
good native contrast without any of the
local dimming trickery but yeah OLED
does measure better especially in gaming
I noticed that I preferred OLED the
infinite contrast ratio is definitely
noticed I mean you can only do so much
with local dimming zones in order to get
the perfect micro contast you need each
individual pixel to be self- lit so
there are many scenes in video games
where the OLED still look substantially
better the colors did look more true to
live yet vibrant on the QD OLED 49 in
OLED for gaming mostly I would recommend
the 49 in and I'm also going to have
links to that one down below if you
prefer that but for me since I wear
these three hats right now between my 9
to5 UM content creation and gaming and
between my 9 to5 and content creation
there's not much time left for gaming
just maybe like a few hours at night my
priorities fall more along the line with
this larger 57in monitor for better
productivity workflows but honestly I
just think everything is just going to
be moving towards OLED I think this VA
panel with mini LED might be one of the
last of its kind but also like I said
there's just nothing else like this in
the market right now so this is the
monitor I bought not to review but to
use as a tool and I will continue to use
this monitor to game edit all the
content you see here on YouTube and also
in my 9 to5 job yeah so I think that's
going to do it for this one if you like
this video press some buttons down below
and I'll see you guys in the next one
thanks bye

The reviewer has been using the Samsung Odyssey G957 57-inch monitor for about 150 days and finds it to be a valuable tool for both productivity and gaming. Despite initial setup challenges due to its size and weight, the monitor's large, immersive screen significantly boosts productivity for tasks like reviewing spreadsheets and managing multiple applications. The reviewer highlights its utility in content creation, allowing for a full view of timelines and media libraries, and notes the sharpness of photos and videos due to its high resolution. While the monitor is capable for gaming, it requires a high-end PC to run smoothly due to its demanding resolution and lack of full upscaled rendering. The reviewer also discusses the monitor's mini-LED panel with local dimming, HDR capabilities, and brightness, comparing its contrast and color gamut unfavorably to OLED displays, particularly for gaming. Ultimately, the reviewer concludes that while OLED technology may be the future, this 57-inch VA panel with mini-LED offers a unique and powerful experience for productivity-focused users.
