SpaceX's biggest shareholders revealed
149 segments
SpaceX, of course, went public in June
in a record IPO. It's been on a volatile
run since then. It's top shareholders
are now uncovered. And several lockups
are still left to expire, though. We're
digging into all the action for the
space stock with Yahoo Finance's Jared
Blikre. So, um it is 13F season, which
is a type of filing from uh for to the
SEC that where basically shareholders
have to reveal what their holdings were
as of the end of
June 30th, right?
>> That's right. So, if you remember the
SpaceX came to market in listed on June
12th. So, that was very on very early on
in the cycle. I did bring a chart. There
are over 1,500 holders of SpaceX stock,
and most of them own a very small
percent. And in fact, the most of the
stock, and this is a top line here, 83%
of the stock is held by 23 people.
>> Wow.
>> At the top of that list, guess what?
That is Elon Musk and the Gigafund. Then
you have the Saudi private and or public
investment fund. That's about a $26
billion holding. D1 Capital. Then you
got Nvidia, Capricorn. Bunch of names uh
probably not familiar with. Ontario
Teachers own $8.7 billion worth. That's
a huge fund right there. And as we were
just talking about over the break,
Alphabet owns a nice chunk as well.
Um so, there are a lot of smaller
holders as in fact, most of them are
smaller holders, but they own a very,
very small chunk. So, let me go back
here. I'm going to I'm going to chart
the price action in SpaceX to kind of
give a timeline here. Uh that's not what
I'm looking for, but this is our This is
the mega caps and how they've actually
done in uh August. And that's kind of a
small side note that most of them are
doing pretty well. But here's SpaceX.
And if we do a 3-month chart, that'll
get everything since day one, I think.
Um maybe there we go. And the $150 is a
big uh number because that was the
opening print, if you recall. That was
the biggest opening print ever for uh
new IPO in its listing. And so, where is
it right now? SpaceX is trading at
147.41.
And we've seen it kind of touch this
level before early on when it had that
big meteoric rise to 225 then it came
crashing back down. 150 has been a key
level. So, that's the one I'm really
watching here. If it can get above that,
I think it's got a decent shot at at
seeing 200 again pretty soon. Um but it
could also roll over at 150.
>> Well, what's interesting too on that
chart is there was all this anticipation
for the earnings but also for that first
lockup expiration.
>> Yes.
>> We knew it was coming. Big slice of
shares coming to market. Another slice
is coming to market this week
potentially. It doesn't mean they're all
going to be sold. It means they're
eligible for sale. The stock actually
went up on the first on the first
expiration day.
>> That surprised a lot of people.
>> Yeah. So, I mean was it just that there
was a lot of selling going into it
probably that people anticipated it was
going to happen.
>> That SpaceX got cut in half more than
half. So, it was at 225 traded all the
way to down to 104 and change. I think
it was just beaten up and you had people
who were willing to step in there. This
is a fun not uh we were just talking
about the big holders but this has a ton
of retail interest too. I follow
VandaTrack and every week they're out
with a new note that these are loyal
followers of the stock. So,
last week or the week before when we had
that 919 million share lockup
expiration, stock did very well the next
day. Now, as you said we have another
319 320 million dollar one or not dollar
but 300
>> Shares, yeah.
>> 320 million shares and we're going to
see one of those every two to three
weeks into their next earnings report.
And so, we're just scratching the
surface of the shares that are going to
be unlocked here. And then the big ones
are next year because after a year Elon
Musk gets to sell his. I don't think
he's going to destroy the share price.
He tends to take out loan on his loans
on his stock when he needs cash. But
yeah, I think you know the net net the
share the share unlocks are probably
going to be a force especially as the
stock climbs higher and higher if it
climbs higher and higher. But so far we
haven't seen it be an issue, but we're
in the early innings there.
>> Well, I mean into your point, that which
is a great one, like if I it dep- it all
depends on time horizon, right? If I'm
somebody who's an early employee of
SpaceX and I've been holding shares
forever and I want to buy a house,
>> Yeah.
>> then I've seen enough appreciation that
I can sell at least some of my shares to
do that. If I am a newer investor, say
one of those folks who showed up in the
13F,
>> Yeah.
>> and I've only been holding it for a few
months and I've seen the stock go down
and down and down, I'm not going to
sell. I'm going to wait until the stock
goes back up again.
>> more. Um so yeah, different different
holding periods, different investors.
This stock is so big. It's got something
for everybody. And it it has captured
the Ameri- the the uh retail traders'
imagination here. So I think
>> have something for everybody. One of my
guests called it Frankenstein recently.
>> [laughter]
>> Frankenstein's monster.
>> Yeah, right. Not Frank- not the doctor.
Not the good doctor, but rather his
creation.
