What comes in a Great Depression Version of Monopoly?
522 segments
Okay, guys. So, I thought I'd do a quick
little video showing what comes in this
Great Depression era uh version of
Monopoly. And so, this is the oldest
version of Monopoly that I own. Um
originally was my uh I think great aunts
who um gave it to my dad who then gave
it to me. Unfortunately, my dad passed
away. So, I don't actually know
specifically who he got it from or the
exact year that it uh came from. try to
make sure this glare doesn't get on
here, but uh what I do know from
checking online, and I'll I'll show it
here in the the video, but it it looks
like given the double patent on it, and
then the uh Salem, Massachusetts, New
York, and London uh trademark down there
that it originally um came from like
1937
to 1940.
So, like late 30s. Um, and it's a little
worn around the edges, but that's
because it's uh been through a lot. But
yeah, that being said, I do love the
fact that we have the hat as the uh
premier piece. I've always thought I've
always thought the hat was best. And in
my videos, I love putting the the hat as
kind of being player one and then uh
making the dog as player two, which it's
actually kind of crazy is there's uh
there's no dog in here. I I I like the
dog. And um you can't really see it
here. We'll we'll bring out the pieces
here in a second, but um underneath that
is a cannon. Like it looks like it came
out of uh the game of risk. So anyways,
uh let's go ahead and open it up.
Inside of it, we have like a it's almost
like a a little like sales sheet
um that kind of shows different things
you can buy. Um actually the craziest
thing about this is if you look at it,
the very first thing for sale is the
board. And the reason the board is for
sale is because there's no board in this
box. This box is not very big. Um, so I
have a couple other Monopoly games out
here, but you can see like a a
modern-day version of Monopoly, the size
of the box versus the size of this. So,
this thing is tiny, and you had to buy
the board separately. Now,
unfortunately, over the years, the board
that I have, uh, it must have gotten
swapped cuz this is actually not the
original board. Um, it's probably
sitting in someone's closet somewhere
just uh, you know, sitting and
collecting dust. Um, it is an older
board. I mean, it still has the purple
uh, Baltic and Mediterranean and then
also that you pay 10% uh, income tax,
but this board, I think it comes from
like a like an 80s or '90s version of of
the game. But the the board and this is
what it's supposed to look like. And
this board here, it's part of this game
that I don't even remember where it came
uh came from. I think it's somebody just
gave it to me for for Christmas one
year. But uh it's really cool cuz it's
kind of got the old uh game and then
like an old game of Clue, like a really
old game of Clue. But this thing isn't
that old. This is, you know, just a few
years old. But they they took the
original Monopoly stuff and and decided
to roll with it. So anyways, back to the
box. Got to keep this guy open. So, uh,
first thing is just all these different
things you can can purchase from from,
uh, Parker Brothers. It's long before
Hasbro. Um, and then we got the the
rules, which basically the same.
Trying to do this onehanded here. uh
basically the same rules that you have
today. Um there's a couple really minor
differences. Uh the biggest one I can
find it. We've got uh like bankruptcy
type stuff where if you end up um
there's a few bankruptcy stuff where if
you end up uh bankrupting to another
player, you actually need to sell off
all your stuff first. and newer games
have kind of made it more like a just
throw what you have. Give them give them
what you have. But anyways, so let's get
into to the box here. First thing here,
I'm actually going to look at the dice.
We're going to get to the pieces in a
moment. Um, but the dice in this game,
um, they are absolutely tiny. Let's see.
Let me see if I can find some dice in
one of these other games. Actually, I
know for sure the dice are not sitting
in in this version. So,
one thing I do is I I actually pull out
all of the uh pieces and take pictures
of them and then put them into
All right, we're just going to pause
this and cut it when we have some dice.
Okay, so I had to find some uh normal
version of dice here. So, if you look at
the dice, they are just a they're
absolutely tiny. Like, it's, you know,
these are just the smallest dice I've
ever seen in a game, but it's kind of
cool. You know, they're they're really
old. So,
next here are the houses and hotels, and
they're made out of wood,
which
you look at them. And I mean, um, you
know, it's kind of cool seeing what they
had back in the day.
where the house is.
Now, let's get into the pieces here.
So,
got the hat. It's definitely seen better
days.
The thimble, which is one of my
favorites. I love putting the thimble in
in videos. Uh the battleship.
Battleship is a a cool one. Uh, we've
got the boot.
The boot's kind of a staple piece. Uh,
the iron, which has been gone for a long
time.
Doesn't even have a flat bottom.
Bring out the cannon.
The cannon's pretty cool. Like,
I don't know. I I feel like that one's
one that that maybe I think they bring
it back in in some versions. Uh and then
holy hell, look at
look at this car. It's all like
it's bent out of shape. Um I mean it's
almost 100 years old. It's 90 or so 85
90 years old. So uh it's to be expected,
right? Okay. Uh the money from this
game,
it's kind of interesting. You got uh
like orange, red hundreds in it. And you
know, the colors of the the money is a
little bit different. But then also,
it's kind of interesting.
See if we can get to the bottom of this
box here. It's definitely seen a lot of
days. Uh there aren't very many. What
was this? There's not very many $500
bills. So, this is like the entire 500s
for the entire game. It's like they knew
that that you wouldn't need that many
$500 bills, but I mean, you know, you've
got all these. This is including the the
hundreds here. So, it's just like Yeah,
it's kind of kind of cool.
So, the the ones they probably were
white back in the day, but they probably
just tarnished over time. You got your
pink fives,
a yellow 10,
and I think they've brought that back,
haven't they, in in newer versions.
Let's see. I I have this out because I
uh took a picture of it earlier for for
an upcoming video. I needed to to show
the bank. But yeah, so 10 are are blue
now.
So,
we've got our yellow tens 20s look the
same. And then our 50s. What What even
is this color?
I don't even know what color this is.
It's kind of like a faded white gray
looking something. I don't know. I mean,
this is old. It's It's definitely seen
seen a lot of days. But, uh anyway, so
that's the money there. One of the my
one of my favorite things about this is
the cards. And so these old cards I
think are awesome. Like the first one,
bank pays you dividend of $50. He's just
smoking a big fat cigar. Like I think
that's awesome. I I think it's cool.
Going back to to look at the old uh
chance cards. Um
would actually be interesting. Uh give
me a second. I'm going to uh do them
side by side with a a new version. Okay,
I've got these all sorted up now and
we're going to do Chance and then
community chest. So, going through the
chance cards. First one here, we have
bank pays you dividend of $50. Um which
this is the first one I had on on the
other side. So, uh I I think it's uh
cool that the guy has a big fat cigar
and just smoking it. Get your dividend.
Um, I'll do the old one first here. So,
Advance to St. Charles Place pulling
along a little kid. Oops.
And then here, it's just it's just him.
Who's he pulling? I don't know. He's not
pulling anyone. Uh, then we've got our
get out of jail free card.
And I don't know. They the the new one
is just kind of
boring down. I I feel.
Then we've got go to jail.
Pulling him all the way there. Here he's
already in jail.
Then we've got the advance to nearest
utility. He's just picking up a
battleship cuz why not?
Here it's the same picture as the yellow
one. You know, it's he's just running.
Um advanced to to Illinois Avenue. He's
kind of like a a hobo just uh making his
way along. He's got his little sack in
the the back there. Again, he's smoking
a big cigar. Uh the new one, it's just
again he's it's just the same picture of
uh go to Illinois. Um they do add the uh
if you pass go, which is kind of kind of
interesting, but I don't know. I when
when I put these in videos and I mean
this one in particular I believe made it
into um a video. I'll put it on the side
here if uh if I can find it. But uh
yeah, I do actually take pictures of the
this actual Monopoly set and then um
touch it up in Photoshop and then put it
into videos. So uh I have fun with these
old old uh cards here. Uh you've been
elected chairman of the board. Extra
extra here. Yeah, it's not good. Then
we've got our advanced and nearest
railroad. This one's kind of simple.
Uh there's actually two of them in
there.
And then
the general repairs.
What is he doing here? He looks like a
pug.
Uh, let's see. Advance to go. Advance to
they they they're using the same thing
over and over again. You know, there
used to be a lot more uh character to
this game. All right. Take a ride on the
Reading Railroad, which it's Reading
Railroad, not Reading. Although uh if
you say Reading, uh who cares? Uh same
pick for that. Then we've got Advance to
Boardwalk, which I love this little
baby. Like what even is going on there?
I can't I don't even know what that that
is. He's carrying a dog, which uh I
guess they decided to make him the token
later. Uh it's just whatever. Um I love
using this here. Just what in the world?
Uh let's see. Go back three spaces.
Getting yanked back.
It's the same picture. I'm just running
backwards. Uh, your building and loan
matures, collect 150, collect 150, and
then uh pay poor tax, which is now a
speeding fine, which what's speeding
fine is $15. I'm not going to get that.
But uh yeah, they got rid of poor tax.
Well, anyways,
Chance is nothing like Community Chest.
So, Community Chest is just all over the
place. So, I love going back and seeing
the original community chest. So, uh
you've won second play or second prize
in a beauty contest. I love this in a a
game night where it's just like, "All
right, I'm second best, but you're
third." Um,
this one turned into you volunteer at a
blood drive. There are free cookies. So,
uh Okay.
advance to go
a big boot. This one comes with a story.
Just when you think you can't go another
step, you finish that foot race and
raise money for your local hospital.
What? That's a lot of backstory for
going to go uh your assessed repairs.
Uh let's see.
You should have volunteered.
So,
let's see. Go to jail.
Blasting late night music. Even go to
jail has like a an additional piece to
it. It's kind of weird. Uh, let's see.
Receive for services. Look at him. I was
like, damn it.
It's kind of a a grouchy, stern guy. Uh,
you organize a bake sale. Okay. Well,
that's something. Uh doctor's fee, $50.
I'll take a $50 doctor's fee. Uh turned
into you buy a few bags of cookies. It's
cookies again. Didn't we just do bags?
It's all about cookies apparently. Um
$50 for cookies. Get out of jail free.
That That was always an awesome one.
It's coming out of a little bird bird
cage. Uh this I mean it's just Okay.
income tax refund
to uh you help your neighbor bring in
her groceries. She makes you lunch to
say thanks. Okay. $20 for lunch for
bringing in groceries. Like come on. Uh
pay the hospital.
He's got twins.
It's like double the uh boardwalk
babies. Um, you go to the local school's
car wash fundraiser.
Forget to close your windows. Pay $100.
Okay, that doesn't make sense. Bank air
in your favor. Now, that was the best
one. We get that. It's like, hell yeah.
Here. You help your neighbors clean up
their yards after a big storm. Like,
again, what do you I don't even know
what that's supposed to mean. Like, are
they giving you money for helping them?
Insurance. Uh, collect $50 from every
player. Grand Opera opening. So
now it's collect 10 from every player.
Uh you organize a block party. Um
interesting. Okay. Uh I feel like there
was another one that was in between
this. I don't remember what it was uh
back in the day, but anyways, from sales
stock, you get 45.
Uh, that's probably liquidating after
the Great Depression. Then it turns into
50, which is a little cleaner of a
number. Uh, you organize a group to
clean up your town's walking path.
You're collecting money. Okay. Uh, pay
school tax,
turns into your fuzzy friends at the
animal shelter will be thankful for your
donation. Um, I mean, at least like
Chance kind of keeps them the same, but
Community Chest definitely changes them
up quite a bit. Uh, let's see. Life
insurance matures, collect $100. And
then we've got, uh, you spend the day
playing games with kids at a local
children's hospital. Collect $100. Okay.
Uh, XM Fund matures, which it's close to
Christmas when I'm recording this. So,
merry Christmas. And over here we've got
uh you set aside time every week to hang
out with your elderly neighbor. You've
heard some amazing stories. Like is the
neighbor paying you $100 to listen to
stories? Like that one that one feels
like that should be like the the free
lunch or whatever. But all right, you
inherit $100
and then we've got uh you help build a
new school playground. Then you get to
test this glare out of here. uh get to
test the slide. So anyways,
uh yeah, they actually changed them up
quite a bit. I love these old version
ones. Um I'll literally just take a
picture of them like this. Boom. And
then uh upload it onto the video. But um
anyways, so last little bit here. We've
got our properties, and the properties
are all going to be about the same. Uh,
this is just a piece of cardboard over
here.
So, our properties,
I didn't put them into order before
doing this.
Okay, they were randomly shuffled into
the box, so I put them all in order for
you. So, first we've got Mediterranean
Avenue. Um, I do like the old purple.
Um, it's been brown for quite a while
now, but I I do like going back and
seeing the old uh purple color for that.
Um, we've got the light blues here.
Then we've got the pinks, which I think
that the pinks and the purples
probably were just too similar in color
and people weren't
being able to tell them apart,
which now I mean the the pinks kind of
get called purples a lot, which I mean
it's the most purple looking um
properties now. We've got our oranges
on the back of them. This kind of looks
cool. mortgaged for 100. It It's
definitely a lot different than like
what you would see from a a new version
of it where it's kind of all reded out.
So,
reds,
our yellows, which that definitely looks
dated. It's kind of interesting going
back to to see that. Uh, we've got our
greens.
We've got board block, which I love the
the white text on it. Um, they actually
have the white text for
uh the purples as well. The newer
versions don't have white text, but I
loved the white text on this. I thought
it looked so good that actually when I
made my uh cards for for my videos, I
actually made made sure that Boardwalk
and Parkplace uh still had white text.
So, the newer versions, let me find them
in here. The newer versions of this
shouldn't have kept them shuffled. So,
like the newer version of this has a a
black background, and I'm like, you
know, that that just doesn't look as
good as as what we've got in the old
ones. So, in in the newer versions, I
actually use a or in in my videos, I
actually use a a white text on it, and I
I think it looks great, and I I would
love if Monopoly bring that back. Uh
let's see here. So, we've got our
railroads.
They're definitely a lot uh planer
looking.
And then finally, our utilities.
Same stuff.
And that. So anyways, uh that's what a
nearly Let's get these uh newer newer
cards out of the way. This is what a
nearly 100year-old
or 90year-old version of Monopoly looks
like. And it's awesome. I actually
bought this version a few years ago,
uh, which is meant to, uh, to look like
it. It's called a a nostalgia version.
Okay. Get this off here. Here. Um, so
it's similar. You got the same rule
book. And then, uh, you can see I
haven't really play this version of it
very much, so a lot of it's still in
plastic. Um, but you do have the old old
version of of these, which I think is
really cool. Um, the old boardwalk. It's
brand new. I mean, I I'm wondering if if
they kind of tried to make it a little
bit fuzzy and worn looking on purpose,
cuz it does look a little bit uh worn,
but uh the one thing they did not get
right is the dice, cuz these are are
huge in comparison. I mean, look at
that. like it's like twice the size. Um,
and then I actually really haven't
looked at this too much, although
Boardwalk with the white. Love it. White
text. Um,
little Parker Brothers stuff,
different games, and then
they actually have like a a silica gel
for the wood. I wonder if that would
would start deteriorating at all. So,
let's go ahead and open these pieces
here
and let's see how how right did they get
it. Um, they have a dog, which
there's no dog. We just saw it. Um, but
we've got our hat.
Oh, they got the uh old old guy on the
horse. I like this piece. This is cool.
Cool piece. Um, they don't have the
cannon. So, we got our car, our boot,
our battleship, the thimble, iron, and
then the dog. So, it's kind of
interesting. So, they basically
uh in this old version,
we've got our we got rid of the cannon
and then
they uh added two pieces. And I'm not
sure when the the dog and the the Mounty
actually started, but uh if anybody
knows, write in the comments. That would
be awesome to to know that. I I think
they're both awesome pieces. Um,
in fact, actually, this this lineup of
pieces would be great. Add the cannon in
and just keep it. I mean, there's all
kinds of crazy stuff now. I mean, you
got like like a cat and a penguin. I I I
don't know, a duck.
Anyways, write your uh opinions on the
uh pieces in the comments cuz uh would
love to get get thoughts on that. But
anyways, thought I'd uh give you guys a
little
showing of what comes in the um not
quite original version of Monopoly, but
a uh a very old version. And uh hope you
guys enjoyed

This video showcases a very old, Great Depression era version of Monopoly, likely from the late 1930s. The presenter, whose father and great-aunt owned the game, highlights its small box size, which originally required purchasing the board separately. The video details the game's components, including wooden houses and hotels, unique game pieces like a hat, thimble, battleship, boot, iron, and cannon (though the dog piece is notably absent in this original set). The money also features different colors and fewer $500 bills than modern versions. A significant portion of the video is dedicated to comparing the old Chance and Community Chest cards with newer versions, pointing out the distinct artwork and often more whimsical or detailed scenarios in the older cards. The presenter also discusses the property cards, noting the return of white text on Boardwalk and Park Place in newer editions, which they prefer. Finally, the presenter compares this vintage set to a modern
