okay welcome back to Gary's Economics

0:02

today is unfortunately my goodbye video for now

0:06

because this will be the last video in the 24/25

0:08

season, thank you

0:11

Okay so this is it

0:13

the last video while I go away

0:15

if you watch this I'll probably already be in Italy

0:17

I wanted to just talk

0:19

I've got here written on my script

0:20

just run with no script, but I can't to be honest

0:23

I'm absolutely knackered

0:24

I wanna talk a little bit about this season

0:26

and this season has been, I would say

0:28

probably the hardest season for me personally

0:32

of Gary's Economics if I'm honest

0:34

I think I probably exhausted myself a little bit

0:36

in the first half of the year

0:38

it seems ages ago now but the paperback came out in

0:41

end of January

0:42

and the first half of the year was absolutely insane

0:45

for me, it was absolutely crazy

0:47

I was everywhere

0:48

it felt like I couldn't live my life really

0:49

we were getting like 50 million views a month

0:52

it really felt like we were gonna take the world over

0:55

and I was working crazy crazy

0:57

crazy crazy hard and really

0:58

really really

0:59

really hard

0:59

I didn't realise it was gonna go on as long as it did

1:03

it just kept going and going and going

1:05

and I had a holiday planned in the spring

1:06

which I kept postponing and postponing and postponing

1:09

and the holiday ended up being quite short

1:11

and I ended up working half the holiday

1:12

doing interviews all over the place

1:14

and then when I came back in June to start this season

1:18

it really felt like we were kind of

1:20

on the edge of winning wealth taxes

1:21

and I really wanted to like

1:22

hit the ground running and really go

1:25

and I started making videos in June

1:27

and it was probably only about 3, 4

1:28

videos in, I just started feeling like I was exhausted

1:32

to be honest

1:33

and I don't know if it's just me getting old

1:35

or if I worked too hard but it was

1:37

it was difficult for me because

1:39

we'd achieved so much and we'd come so close

1:42

it really felt like what it needed was for me to like

1:44

keep pushing and push more and more and more

1:48

it just felt like, the sort of the legs weren't there

1:50

I didn't have the energy I needed to really run in

1:54

it felt like when I'm really doing a lot of work

1:56

you know, I can be doing interviews

1:58

and doing these videos and writing articles

2:01

and appearing on people's podcasts

2:03

and it really feels like you can kind of

2:04

carry the thing on your back

2:06

but I couldn't really

2:07

This is the first time really

2:08

that I've ever done this channel

2:09

that I just felt like I didn't have

2:11

the energy that I needed

2:13

to push us to where we needed to be

2:16

and that was difficult for me

2:17

to be honest, especially

2:18

because

2:18

it felt like we were quite close to winning at times

2:22

but I think if I'm honest

2:24

we were probably never that close yet

2:27

and it's probably partially wishful thinking for me

2:29

anyway because when you're working so so

2:31

so hard you just wanna get there, right?

2:33

You wanna get there, you wanna reach the end

2:35

you wanna win and have it won and kind of go away

2:38

go on holiday for like a year

2:40

but the truth is, it was never gonna be that easy

2:42

we've made unbelievable, amazing

2:44

amazing strides this year to win the public

2:46

but what we've seen is

2:48

it's not enough just to win the public

2:49

you do need to figure out

2:52

how to win over the politicians

2:53

how to win over, you know

2:55

the media to some degree and this intellectual class

2:57

how do we break in to that sort of

2:59

how do we break in with the posh people, basically

3:01

and I think the truth is

3:03

we were never gonna quite make it this year

3:05

which is a shame, but the truth is

3:08

it's exactly what I predicted

3:09

you know, if you go and

3:10

if you go and look at the videos that we did

3:13

just before the election

3:16

this is exactly what I said would happen

3:17

it's exactly what I said Labour would do

3:19

there's not a single thing that's happened

3:21

that surprised me. I didn't expect Labour to come

3:23

over, and they haven't

3:25

I expected Labour to be unpopular and they have

3:27

I expected Labour to change leader

3:29

and it looks like they will

3:30

a new leader will come in

3:31

it's new opportunity but if I'm totally honest

3:33

I don't think we'll get them either

3:35

but we are in a much much

3:38

much stronger position than we were one year ago

3:40

two years ago three years ago

3:42

the size of this movement is huge now so

3:46

I'm gonna keep fighting.

3:48

So that was kind of where I was

3:49

when I came back and did the videos

3:51

I felt that my energy was kind of going

3:53

which is a shame

3:54

because I'd only been back a month,

3:55

month and a half and I always feel with these videos

3:59

I try my best to do them without a script

4:01

but it's hard when I'm tired

4:02

and I feel like when you go without a script

4:05

what really drives the videos

4:07

is your understanding and your passion and your energy

4:11

and it's sometimes difficult to combine those things

4:14

cause you wanna

4:16

keep that shape and structure and clarity

4:17

you get from understanding

4:19

but also allow that sort of passion to come through

4:22

and what I felt really during this season was

4:25

the energy was kind of going

4:27

and then we saw this like, massive

4:31

massive rise in the media salience of immigrant

4:35

refugee stuff, far right stuff

4:37

and that was really difficult for me

4:40

to be honest because

4:42

you know

4:43

I've always had this idea that I'm an economist

4:47

and I talk about the economy

4:48

and our current economic situation is not working

4:50

or not gonna work for 80, 90% of people

4:53

so we can really rally and unite the public on this

4:57

and a big part of

4:58

sort of, the philosophy of this channel

5:00

and my philosophy

5:01

is basically about uniting the public

5:04

and as this anti immigrant rhetoric really went up

5:08

and up and up

5:08

and up and up what I probably felt most personally

5:12

was just the division

5:13

basically, the division in the country

5:15

the division in the public, and for me it was difficult

5:18

you know, I know people think I'm a communist

5:20

I don't come from a political background

5:22

I come from a very working class, poor background

5:26

but then I've been to fancy universities

5:27

and I've worked fancy jobs

5:29

so now in many ways

5:30

I'm in a more sort of middle class space

5:32

and what I felt with this anti immigrant thing

5:34

reminded me a lot of how I felt with the Brexit thing

5:37

which was

5:39

I saw the sort of class divisions in this society

5:43

really being sort of torn at the seams

5:46

and it kind of felt like this division

5:48

between the world that I came from

5:50

and the world that I'm in now

5:51

and it's hard really, it's hard

5:53

it's sort of

5:54

it breaks my heart in a way to see so much division

5:59

and I worry. I worry that if

6:01

we don't do anything about this

6:03

we can end up kind of

6:04

going the way that America has gone

6:06

where basically the country is like split into two

6:09

and everybody with the red hat

6:10

hates everyone with the blue hat

6:12

and everyone with the blue hat

6:14

hates everyone with the red hat

6:15

and I don't want it to go that way

6:17

I don't want it to go that way

6:18

so I decided to speak a little bit more about

6:22

the protest and the migrant stuff

6:23

which is not something I'm super

6:24

super comfortable speaking about

6:26

but it felt like something I had to do

6:28

and I did my best to speak about it in a way that

6:31

is compassionate and understand what's happening

6:33

and I hope I said the right things

6:35

I do my best

6:36

but we've got to the end of the season now

6:39

I've been pushing it if I'm honest

6:41

trying to sort of push myself to keep going

6:43

because I was only away last

6:46

in May, June

6:47

and I felt bad to take another break

6:50

but I could feel that exhaustion coming

6:52

and when I get to the end of a season

6:53

I kind of

6:54

I kind of feel the same at the end of every season

6:59

which is this sense of

7:01

having really worked a lot

7:04

I put a lot of effort

7:06

into the this channel and these videos

7:08

and each season we achieve more

7:10

and each season we achieve more and

7:12

this year in particular

7:13

I think it's amazing what we've achieved

7:15

and you put so much work in

7:16

and you get to the end

7:18

and you realize that we still haven't won

7:21

and we're not even winning

7:24

and it's hard I think, I find that hard

7:27

but what I wanna say is, we are getting there

7:31

we are moving forward

7:33

the channel is like so

7:34

so much louder and bigger than it was

7:37

when I started this channel 5 years ago

7:39

I mean when I started 5 years ago

7:41

with my mate Simran

7:42

I never

7:43

ever would have imagined we could be what we are now

7:46

which is genuinely, legitimately

7:48

I think a major political player in this country

7:51

that's what we are and that growth is thanks to you

7:55

This channel is is ultimately a political experiment

7:58

which is to see whether

8:02

an almost unfunded YouTube channel can compete

8:05

with the major newspapers

8:08

and political broadcasters

8:11

TV channels, radio channels

8:13

on the basis of word of mouth from the public

8:16

just by being honest, being clear

8:20

being knowledgeable

8:22

and explaining what's happening to the public

8:24

and we're doing it, we're doing it

8:26

we're one of the major political players in the country

8:29

and I'll keep doing it, if we keep growing

8:32

we'll still be there

8:34

there's big opportunities next year

8:35

and I'll be back, I'll do my best to take ‘em

8:38

I wanna thank Jack, cameraman

8:42

Jack does great work

8:44

These videos are a lot tighter

8:45

when they go out than when I do them

8:47

and that's thanks to Jack's work

8:49

I never check his work

8:50

cause I have a implicit trust in him

8:52

he's doing a great job.

8:55

I wanna thank Oscar

8:56

he's the only employee on this channel

8:59

and he has asked me

9:01

he basically runs runs all the

9:02

all the background stuff, all the organizational stuff

9:04

and he has asked me in particular

9:06

in typically selfless Oscar fashion

9:09

to publicise

9:10

the merch that he's worked hard to get made

9:12

these tax wealth not work t shirts

9:14

I think there's more, we've got stickers

9:16

hoodies, tote bags...

9:18

Oscar's doing fantastic work

9:20

We'll put a comment in the link

9:23

a comment in the links...

9:24

a link in the comments for people who want to buy merch

9:29

I wanna say a very special

9:30

thank you to the patreon supporters

9:32

it's the patron supporters that pay Jack, that pay Oscar

9:36

we have never ever put any adverts in these videos

9:40

and the reason we're able to do that

9:41

is because of the Patreon supporters

9:43

it all works because of you

9:45

but more than anything like

9:47

it means a lot to me to see that

9:48

ordinary people are willing

9:50

to pay to support something they don't

9:53

get anything back for it

9:54

they pay because they care about this project

9:57

like I do, and when times are tough

9:59

it makes me feel like I'm not doing it alone

10:01

so yeah massive thanks to Jack, to Oscar

10:06

to all the patreon supporters

10:07

really appreciate that

10:09

I've got a long list of thanks here

10:10

I wanna thank other people who do this work

10:13

Gabriel Zucman doing amazing work in France

10:15

all the great guys at Patriotic Millionaires UK

10:18

especially Rebecca Gowland

10:20

fantastic work they do over there

10:22

I want to thank Zack Polanski for the massive work

10:24

he's done publicising wealth taxes

10:26

whether you like him or not

10:27

you know, I don't agree with him on everything

10:30

this guy has been doing so much work

10:32

publicising wealth taxes

10:33

we have to thank him. So many interviews

10:35

you gotta respect that

10:36

I've got a long list here of all the other creators

10:40

who I wanna thank. When I went away in May

10:43

I did a call out to people, to make art

10:46

to make, especially to make videos and there's so many

10:48

I'm gonna forget some. Jimmy the Giant as always

10:52

big friend of the channel

10:53

working his tits off doing great work

10:55

Frankie

10:56

Meditations of an Anxious Mind doing some great stuff

10:59

good lad, Forest Jar on Instagram

11:03

I think Forest Jar’s videos are really

11:05

really, really good work

11:06

go check them out

11:08

Anna Bocca, she's doing great work on YouTube

11:10

check out her channel. Barry's Economics

11:13

you gotta mention Barry's Economics

11:15

Barry's Economics, fantastic

11:16

I think he's nearly 10,000 subs

11:18

go check him out. Louisa Munch Critical Theory

11:22

these last two, Barry's Economics and Louisa Munch

11:24

I wanna give them a special mention

11:26

because I think the two of these made their channels

11:31

basically in response to the call out I did in May

11:33

saying I wanna see more people doing like, creating

11:37

So that means a lot to me

11:40

it's hard making a channel

11:42

you do a lot of work for not a lot of money

11:44

for basically no money for a lot of time

11:46

and I know how much work it is because I do it

11:48

so I really do appreciate you guys who

11:51

who are doing the work

11:52

Barry's Economics and Louisa Munch Critical Theory

11:54

the guys at Novara, Unlearning Economics

11:57

Punters Politics in Australia

11:59

Chloe Swarbrick in New Zealand

12:02

Ha-Joon Chang, doesn't have a channel

12:03

but I want him to make an Instagram about food

12:05

come on Ha-Joon Chang, you'll be really popular

12:10

I really appreciate other people doing it

12:12

I always feel guilty going on holiday

12:14

because I feel like I carry a lot of this movement

12:17

but I see more and more people making great videos

12:20

and it makes me feel like I can take breaks

12:22

which I need and I really appreciate that.

12:25

All of the other creatives who've,

12:28

people who sent us music, paintings

12:31

Jordan Stevens of Rizzle Kicks

12:33

putting us on the album

12:34

all of the grime artists who've been reaching out to us

12:37

Bashy, Toddla T everyone

12:39

the people who've been making t shirts, posters

12:42

stickers

12:44

it means a lot to me

12:46

this season's been a difficult one for me

12:47

I've worked so hard this year

12:49

and I've really exhausted myself

12:52

it's difficult doing creative work

12:54

when you feel exhausted I think the biggest

12:55

challenge about this particular part of the season is

12:58

in previous seasons

12:59

I've been very much focused on doing the creative work

13:03

doing the videos, doing the interviews

13:05

but this last season

13:07

I've been doing tons of work behind the scenes

13:09

which is trying to talk to think tanks

13:10

trying to talk to politicians

13:12

trying like, set stuff up

13:13

trying like, find ways to actually break into politics

13:17

and I hate it, I'm so bad at that

13:19

at that work

13:20

and it's so much easier to just be making the videos

13:22

trying to make amazing videos

13:24

and I'm not great at sort of multitasking

13:26

but we have to do it, we have to figure out ways this

13:29

This channel was

13:29

never about just making me famous on YouTube

13:33

supposed to be about changing policy

13:35

I'll keep doing that and

13:37

I wanna thank everyone who

13:39

who watches the videos who shares the videos

13:41

I really

13:41

really appreciate it. There's a

13:44

I live in East London and there's a

13:46

there's a famous mural down the street from me

13:48

called Cable Street Mural

13:49

which is, it's a mural from the

13:53

I guess it was maybe the 30s, back when

13:55

like serious fascism was on the rise

13:58

and Nazism was on the rise in Europe

13:59

and there was a big like, fascist Nazi movement here in

14:02

London and in the UK and there was a march

14:05

the fascist march in London

14:07

and the locals in east London came out

14:09

and they didn't accept it

14:10

there was a massive fight

14:12

there's a big mural down the street

14:14

which is nice if you're ever in London

14:16

go check it out. And I go

14:17

I cycle past it all the time and quite often

14:19

I'll stop and just have a little look

14:21

and I stopped the other day

14:22

and I was standing by this mural

14:24

and I was looking at this mural

14:26

and just as I was looking

14:27

The sun was going down, painting the scene, and

14:33

just as I was looking at it

14:37

I saw that somebody had put a sticker

14:40

right on the railing at the bottom

14:41

right in the middle

14:43

a big tax wealh not work sticker

15:12

and when I see stuff like that it makes me think

15:17

that all the hard work is worth it

15:22

So that's it, I've got to go

15:24

I'll be already in Italy by the time this comes out

15:29

we've got a lot going on

15:31

some stuff I'm not allowed to speak about yet

15:33

cause it's not public

15:34

we're trying to do some really exciting stuff

15:36

so many offers coming in

15:37

we're trying to do some good stuff, tour in Italy

15:40

which is happening now. You'd have probably missed it

15:42

by the time this comes out

15:43

but we'll put the dates out on another short. Australia and

15:46

New Zealand tour coming in February

15:47

March

15:49

I think there's still tickets available

15:51

go and check that out

15:52

I'm really looking forward to going down under

15:55

I'm not quite sure how long we'll be down for

15:57

but I think we'll be at least a few months

15:59

we'll probably do some specials

16:00

in particular around the budget

16:02

because the budget's coming out in November

16:05

Government's gonna raise taxes

16:07

not on the rich

16:08

on workers

16:09

and people are gonna try to blame me for that

16:11

so we'll make some videos to make it very

16:13

very very

16:13

very clear that we are campaigning to raise taxes

16:16

on the very rich, not on working people

16:18

we'll probably have to do a special or two around the budget

16:21

maybe something end of the year

16:23

we'd love to go and meet Gabriel Zukman in France

16:26

Jack's been practicing his French especially

16:30

we don't know if we’ll manage to figure that out

16:33

but I'll be back

16:34

and in the meantime, keep watching the videos

16:37

keep making stuff, keep creating

16:39

keep talking about it

16:40

the message is simple

16:42

living standards are falling

16:43

because of growing wealth inequality

16:45

if you don't fix wealth inequality

16:46

if you don't fix the tax system

16:48

living standards will fall further

16:50

tax wealth not work

16:53

keep fighting, keep talking about it

16:54

I know it's a long fight

16:56

and sometimes it can be dispiriting

16:58

but I promise you this, we will win in the end

17:01

if we didn't win yet

17:04

it isn't the end

17:06

good luck.

Interactive Summary

Gary announces his temporary departure and the end of the 24/25 season of "Gary's Economics," reflecting on the past year as his most challenging due to personal exhaustion from relentless work and public appearances.
