Don't Start YouTube Over 40 - (Until You Watch THIS)
202 segments
Nothing matters if you can't press record.
This video really breaks-- I suppose it breaks all of the rules that I
would usually teach when it comes to video and YouTube and social media.
There's no retention structure here.
There's no perfect hook.
It's just me, a brew, and something that I can't stop thinking about
since yesterday, and I would imagine that a lot of you go through it.
So that's why I'm making this video, to share it.
It's not what I had planned, but the conversation in the Heartbrand Blueprint
yesterday, just kinda wouldn't leave me alone and it, it almost-- No,
it didn't almost, it did sadden me.
Let me give you some context.
There's a gentleman in the blueprint, and you know what?
He is an absolute fabulous guy, and I've seen him practice in
his videos, and they're great.
They're really, really good.
And he writes beautiful content, and he posts beautiful posts about the experience
he's having on this journey, this creator's journey, which I imagine people
watching this will, will resonate with.
But he hasn't posted a YouTube video yet, and it's those 3 AM moments that he shares
that kind of keep him up at night and
It's interesting 'cause they keep him awake so then he creates a
beautiful written piece of content and puts it in the community to share
the story that he's going through.
But maybe didn't have someone to tell him that those are your videos, my friend You
know, the, the, the power, the, the story, almost some trauma around not being able
to press record and make those videos are the videos that he needs to make.
And it'll be like you too.
You know, I'm… complete honesty, I struggle.
I have those moments where I can't press record or something feels off
or, you know, the lighting, you know, the, the, the whatever it might be.
I mean, this is a very, what I call an ugly video.
It's an imperfect video.
But these are the videos I think the world needs to see.
They need to see kind of behind the eyes, if you will.
They need to see those moments when… You know, I've been doing
this for 13 years, and my biggest regret is not starting YouTube sooner.
You know, I've done it with clients, I've helped clients, but I've
never, I never did it for me sooner.
I felt it had to be a certain way.
I felt that when I was creating content 'cause I was running a social media
agency, it had to have a standard.
But none of you guys out there knew that I had that social media agency,
so I was putting the pressures and the standards in my head upon
myself, and this is what he's doing.
You know, he has been successful with business and life and, you know, in
the military and things like that.
So he's naturally put a, kind of a s- a standard there that he's
gotta hit before they go live.
And you might be experiencing this too, and, and that's the reason he's
not, not that he's not hit record, he's practiced in private, and I think
everyone needs to practice in private.
You know, we should be putting the reps in so that we can get better
and we can make better content.
You know, I, I can see the sun going in and out over there, so
I would imagine that the light in here is, is, is not doing too great.
But that's part of the beauty about being a content creator.
A lot of people are coming to the world right now, and they are going
to YouTube to start a business, and I absolutely advocate that.
They really should.
But then what happens is they get hung up and they chase the money.
People chase the money, and they don't create the videos, the content.
They don't fall in love with the process.
This, what I'm doing right now, is one of the types of videos that I
absolutely love to make just because it's a stream of consciousness.
It's a thought that's grabbed hold of me.
It's breaking every rule for a, you know, well-performing, high-viewed video.
But it's a video that needs to be made.
It's one of those things that needs to be brought out into the world
to give people maybe the courage to say, "You know what? Yeah, yeah,
I hear what that guy's saying."
You know, my heart right now is pounding.
It's got this little pain in my chest.
Promise I'm not having a heart attack.
But it's, it's, it's that level of anxiety and anxiousness that you might
feel too when you come to press record.
But let's be fair, it's never really about the camera, is it?
It's not about the lighting, whether it be good or bad, because we can
overcome that just by walking down the street and making a video.
It's never about the audio, although it probably should be about the audio
because most people won't watch a video that sounds bad over one that looks
bad, and it's all subjective, isn't it?
But the real block is what nobody says out loud
And it's a personal thing, isn't it?
It's what will people think of me?
We're actually worried about strangers judging us.
We're worried about strangers judging us when most of the
time the reason they judge us is because they wish they could do it.
They wish that they were brave enough.
They wish they had something worth sharing.
And I'll be honest, we all have something worth sharing.
I believe I've been put on this planet to help people share their message
and make our world a better place.
I live by the mantra of communicating a kinder world.
We have these tools, you know, microphone, camera, laptops, phones, all of that
stuff, to be able to share a message that's worth sharing, to put some good
back into our planet, 'cause right now we know, we know it's in a bad way with wars
and politics and famine and fighting, you know, and, all manner of dreadful things.
So what if we did put our message out into the world?
What if my client did take those pieces of written copy and just put them on
a Post-It note or a whiteboard or, you know, just a piece of paper or a
document on his computer screen and just started riffing those and sharing
the insights and the thoughts and the feelings to connect with people?
Because it's in that messy middle, if you will, where people are trying,
and that's what we need to remember.
When you come to something like this, and maybe you're new, you're literally trying,
and there's nothing greater than that.
There's nothing greater than, you know, doing what we tell our
children to do, is, "Just try, son.
Just try."
Polished, polished is not the goal, okay?
Honesty is.
the whole internet is lacking honesty and sincerity and integrity, and I believe
that, we can really improve upon that.
We can share our journey, you know, because there is, there is a lie or
there's some misconceived … no, there's some misconception, misconception
that the creator journey just goes up.
But it doesn't.
It's up, it's down, it's left, it's right, it's round and round.
We'll have so many things that will impact us, especially if we're creators
over 40 in our second season of life.
we've got family, we've got a day job.
With this might be your side hustle, it might be just a project that you
just wanna just lean into and create a legacy for yourself so that your
children, your grandchildren, your great-grandchildren, and their children
can watch these videos and show the impact that you've made in the world.
Because you don't know what's gonna happen from 10 years from now.
It could be something quite amazing that you do just by starting
with that first YouTube video
Now, if we go back to the guy that's in my community
I'm aware that we need someone in our corner to just give us that little nudge.
I'm not saying a kick up the backside and massive accountability and rah,
rah, rah, but just something to aim for and the security and the safety to
know that you've got someone sat next to you on the bus, and he's gonna come
with you, and he's gonna support you,
So I asked him, I said, "What's your start date for your channel?" Because
I know his background, and I know where he's at, and I've been there, and I've
coached so many people through this process over the last decade or so.
He needed a date.
So we set a date.
It's actually my daughter's birthday, and I'm launching another channel as well to
make the whole video process simpler and easier and, and show people how to make
videos that everybody loves to watch.
It's actually a title of a video that kind of gave me the idea.
It was one of mine many, many moons ago, and it was a very much a press record and
go for it type of video, and it did well.
And, and I, and I love that process of, you know, that stream of consciousness
as I spill my tea all over me.
That stream of consciousness just coming and sharing because you know what?
There can be things done in the editing process.
We've got the tools of AI that can help us.
So he's, he set a date for the 30th of July, my daughter's 13th birthday,
and I said… Because in the blueprint right now, we're running a 100-day
accelerator, and I'm building a, a, an arm of my business alongside
these guys launching their business.
So I said, "Right, I will make that mine as well." So it's the 8th of, July today.
We've got to the 30th to have the channel launched, content
on it, and moving forward.
And maybe I'll put a link around this video so you can,
you can get access to it.
But I believe this is gonna go out before.
This is gonna out before because it's my level of accountability.
But this is part of the process.
You know, set some dates, set some times, write some things down, and then kind
of turn it on yourself in some way.
So if you're sat there with a million and one ideas in here, or a bit like
me, Post-it notes everywhere with, "Oh, that would make a good video. I could
talk about that." What are you gonna do?
Because none of what I said matters unless you decide to press record.
Now, I know it's easy for all these YouTube gurus to say, "Oh,
you just gotta press record."
But at the end of the day, that is actually the truth.
I'm a big advocate for practicing in private.
You know, I have a whole course on it.
But it is that point of putting the reps in.
And also, if you're in your second season and you can do it,
you can inspire your children or your grandchildren to do it too.
Because here's the reason.
The world has changed massively and there are people out there,
you know, young people, 50, 60, $70,000 worth of student debt.
What if you could inspire them to follow in your footsteps based on
the legacy you're creating building a YouTube channel and maybe a side
hustle or starting an online business?
If you're sat on all these ideas and Post-it notes and notebooks full of
things that you could talk about, why not just start practicing private today?
Press record and see what comes out.
Now, it might be dog shit, okay?
It might not be very good.
You might hate it, but that's okay because your first video
is not about being perfect.
Perfect comes after the 50th, 100th, 200th video.
it's the practice.
So if you're sat on a million and one ideas, Post-it notes, and notebooks
full of content suggestions, I wanna ask you to come and join me on the 30th as
well, or whenever the next 30th is for you when you watch this video, and say,
"That's when I'm gonna start my channel.
I'm gonna record videos in the background so that I can get ready for that date.
I'm gonna make my videos and get ready." Because I've said it numerous
times, and I said it to him, none of this matters until you press
record and post that first video.
What happens next is everything becomes so much easier, because
you'll sit there and you'll think, "What was all the fuss about?"
Ask follow-up questions or revisit key timestamps.
The video addresses the common struggle creators face when trying to start their YouTube journey: the fear of pressing 'record'. The speaker discusses the importance of overcoming perfectionism, the value of practicing in private, and the necessity of being authentic rather than polished. Through the story of a community member, the speaker highlights that the hesitation to start is often rooted in fear of judgment, and encourages viewers to simply begin, set deadlines, and focus on the message rather than the technical quality of the first few videos.
