Building a Better Home Lab: Orange Pi 6 Plus Unboxing
42 segments
All right, here we go with an unboxing
video. This is my first actual unboxing,
so we'll see how things go.
So, I ordered an Orange Pi 6 Plus
from Amazon. Here we go. Get that out of
there. Orange Pi 6 Plus.
I figured I would test it out in my home
lab and see if I could get some
improvement over the performance of my
current Raspberry Pi 4. Uh, comes with
some mounting screws here.
And there is the device. Fairly simple.
I do have a
have your electrostatic bag. Cut that
open.
So, I do have an old power supply from a
laptop. 100 watt. That should work
nicely with this. I'll post a video once
I have it up and running. But as you can
see, there's quite a bit of IO on this.
It has two USBC ports, two USB 2.0's,
two USBA 3.0's, and two 2.5 GB
Ethernets, as well as display port and
HDMI. It's a fairly powerful board,
especially for the size. I also ordered
a case that should be coming in soon.
You also have a few M2 slots on the
back. For now, because of the prices of
NVME and RAM, as you all know, I'll just
be running this off of an external SSD,
which should be fine for my use case. Uh
my biggest hurdle that I will likely
have to overcome is just getting
Kubernetes to play nicely with this. My
plan is to replace my Raspberry Pi 4
that's acting as the control plane with
this guy. It should be a lot faster and
more powerful and then it should allow
me to expand going forward into the
future. So, looking forward to trying
this out and I'll let you guys know how
it goes.

The speaker unboxes an Orange Pi 6 Plus, acquired from Amazon, with the intention of testing it in their home lab to improve performance over a current Raspberry Pi 4. The device is noted for its extensive I/O, including multiple USB ports, dual 2.5 GB Ethernets, DisplayPort, and HDMI. The speaker plans to power it with an old 100W laptop supply and run it off an external SSD. The main challenge anticipated is integrating Kubernetes, as the Orange Pi 6 Plus is intended to replace the Raspberry Pi 4 as the control plane, aiming for increased speed, power, and future expansion.
