Could Tesla merge with SpaceX? The future of the space economy
172 segments
Lisa, just give us your big picture
impression of what has happened today.
There's a lot going on.
>> Yes, and thank you for having me on such
a historic day, Jared. Uh we've been
looking forward to this for over a
decade uh following the company since
the start of it and investing and
investing today as well with more uh you
know, we just talked about the cash
being uh outlayed for this investment
and I'm one of the people. Um so, in the
past we talked about every company
becoming a space company. They just
don't know it yet. And and the irony of
the story is that every investor will
become a a SpaceX investor at least on
the NASDAQ. Uh
and and they they didn't realize that
either. So, it's becoming ubiquitous and
now I think more of the public is
starting to understand the story of this
value creation uh beyond Starlink.
>> Yeah. So, we're all going to be space
traders. I can accept that. I in fact, I
I think it's happening already and that
is the future. But it's always a
question about timing here. You
mentioned
you're an early investor and you
mentioned that you're buying more today.
Um
are you price sensitive here? What's
behind Are you just going to buy as much
as you can get? What's your strategy
here and what's your end goal with
owning all these SpaceX shares?
>> Yeah, and this it's interesting because
typically with a an IPO this exciting,
the philosophy is, "Oh, you just wait
until it settles down and then you put
your money in." But I think in this
case, uh the ownership at this point is
important to have that skin in the game
now as the growth story begins.
Uh I mean, they have the the data center
plan. They have Starlink operational. As
we look at the A1 uh
A1 satellites that they're building that
are going to be individual data centers
that will mesh in the future.
You have to think about the compounding
capability that each of these launches
is going to have just as Starlink is
compounded with now over 10,000
satellites. So an individual data center
is the size of a swimming pool.
>> Yeah, can you give us an outline here?
When can we expect data centers in space
realistically?
>> Well, the
the has dispenser that they've designed
for Starship has been tested for
deploying those specifically and
Starship has done of course many prac-
practice launches getting getting more
acceleration in the capability with each
one. But you've got
the goal of Starship being fully
packed with SpaceX [clears throat]
data centers in the next 12 to 18
months. So that story is becoming
reality.
>> Yeah, and you know, it gets back to the
main point I think here. If you read the
SpaceX prospectus, this is being billed
as an AI company. This is AI
infrastructure.
How do you What do you see about
we've heard lots of people speculating
about a possible merger with Tesla and
that might come sooner than people
think. As an investor, does that concern
you? Are you excited for it? Do you want
just one big Elon Musk company?
>> Well, I've covered all the bases Jared.
I'm a long time Tesla investor too.
So that merger sounds great to me.
But we talked about the Tesla being
integrated with Starlink so that you
have that full inner connectivity in
your car.
There's a lot of synergies
but I think the larger story really is
that
uh, each component for the future uh,
from chips to satellites to data centers
to the boring company that's the future
on Mars. Uh, Elon has his foot in the
door and is enabling all of these. So,
if you've got your uh, capability built
out for
macro hard, the you know, and the and
the batteries and all of these elements
for the future and you're ahead of
everyone else in these arenas
uh,
you put them all together and now we're
leaping forward even faster.
>> All right, we've been talking a lot
about SpaceX, but you know, let's talk
about your company Explore. Are there
any tie-ins here, benefits that you're
getting directly from this historic IPO
or is it more down the road uh, just in
terms of okay, history is marching the
new tide is kind of marching on here and
you're going to be a part of it.
>> We are going to be a part of it
definitely seeing momentum with uh,
a lot of investors wanting to pay
attention to where we're going with our
company which has multi-sensor
satellites on a platform collecting uh,
exquisite data that would be utilized by
these data centers. We're very unique in
terms of the quality of what we can
collect and how we process it and then
can deliver it to data centers for their
uh, needs. So, we are definitely part of
that value chain and it's exciting to
see investors waking up and saying,
"Gosh, uh, I need to be investing in the
the raw materials and the hardware."
Well, ours is software in terms of the
data, but so basically a data company
and they're the data storage company in
space.
>> I want to get you out on this. What do
you think people are going to be What do
you think the space looks like and I use
that term in several different ways, but
what do you think the space space looks
like in 5 10 years and then from that
point kind of looking back on this day,
do you really think this is an historic
day or is this just part of is this just
another big event in a year of many big
events?
>> Well, this may be a year that of many
big events because it's enabling other
companies that I'm I'm an investor in 37
commercial space companies. We know that
there's traction to go public with other
space companies like Axiom space for
example or Umbra that's doing synthetic
aperture radar.
All of the
I would say the the the pathways to
growth have been built quietly over the
past years and as we see them compound 5
years
from now, I think the
the financial story will be spectacular.
AI and that value there is growing by
the day with terrestrial data. What
happens when we open it up to data
that's exquisite and otherwise
unattainable from space.
>> All right and we're going to leave it
there. Lisa, really great talk to you.
Thank you for your time.
