0:00

so last year back in November I started

0:03

my agency uh which is a web agency doing

0:08

websites as a service where I would

0:10

basically try to sell a website uh on a

0:13

monthly subscription so they rent the

0:16

website uh from me and I make a custom

0:18

design and a generally a nice design uh

0:22

the method for me that I uh tried out uh

0:24

since November and then for like 3 four

0:27

five month was uh cold Outreach

0:30

where I did uh 1,700

0:34

1,700 uh

0:36

emails um I'm not going to implicate

0:39

myself and saying exactly in which

0:41

country uh that I did it or where I did

0:43

it or from which email addresses because

0:46

in Europe with the new G gdpr uh rules

0:50

there's like some really really uh big

0:53

findes if you actually do it so if

0:55

you're going to do call out in Coal

0:57

Outreach in the in EU you really have to

1:00

be careful so in this video I'm just

1:02

going to walk you through exactly how I

1:04

set up my cold Outreach the results and

1:07

then also sort of my final thoughts if

1:10

this is worth worth it or not doing cold

1:12

Outreach um I did have success with it

1:15

to some extent however right now I'm not

1:17

doing CA Outreach anymore so that's just

1:19

a small spoiler alert I might split this

1:22

video up into two if it's going to be

1:23

too long we'll see about

1:27

that okay so first of all what you have

1:30

to be aware of when you do cold Outreach

1:32

in EU there is a very strict uh spam

1:35

rule you can't send a email to any

1:38

person business or private um that's

1:41

deemed as spam and that's basically

1:44

reaching out to someone uh through email

1:46

or other means it can also be a message

1:48

on Instagram LinkedIn without them

1:51

consenting uh you to do so so they

1:54

actually have to reach out to you first

1:57

before you are allowed to send them

1:59

anything there's certain exceptions

2:01

where you can reach out to people that's

2:03

for example if you have e-commerce store

2:05

and people buy something uh from you

2:08

okay you allowed to send them relevant

2:10

information about the product uh you

2:12

know if if it's out of stock or

2:14

something like that or there's also some

2:16

other cases but uh in those very small

2:20

cases you can't include anything related

2:23

to you want to sell something to the

2:25

customer so actually reaching out to uh

2:29

people

2:30

uh trying to sell something is

2:31

completely uh illegal basically the

2:34

whole EU so we have to be careful about

2:36

that uh the fines is it depends on the

2:40

country I I believe so the country where

2:43

I did coal Outreach the fines starts at

2:46

around uh

2:48

$10,000 and then in the in the currency

2:51

and that's and that can be for just one

2:52

email so if you send one email and they

2:54

and you get caught then it starts at

2:57

$10,000 and then it just goes up from

3:00

there so it's going to start from

3:01

$10,000 and then uh you will be

3:04

fin I believe last time I checked it's

3:07

around

3:08

$20 per email and so if you send 100

3:12

emails to the same person it's going to

3:14

be 100 time

3:15

20 the the probability of actually

3:18

getting caught is probably very slim so

3:20

what they normally do is they're going

3:21

to go after the big companies that uh

3:23

have a large email list and then spam

3:25

their uh email list from someone that

3:28

has not consented

3:30

that's also why when you go to any let's

3:32

say e-commerce store the subscribe to

3:35

newsletter in in in Europe um cannot be

3:39

pre-checked or cannot be a requirement

3:41

it's something that they have to consent

3:42

to uh in order to actually subscribe to

3:45

the newsletter otherwise can be uh

3:49

caught uh there's not really that many

3:51

people that get caught or you know get a

3:53

fine but it does happen um it does

3:56

happen and I've seen several examples

3:59

once in while so obviously and I'm not

4:01

going to you know tell anybody to do

4:04

something illegal but if you actually

4:06

had to do cold Outreach in uh Europe uh

4:09

you would want a domain that's

4:11

completely Anonymous so that's a com

4:14

domain you want to use and uh you want

4:17

to have it anonymized because like if

4:19

you get certain domains in in Europe

4:23

from certain countries your address and

4:25

your information is actually connected

4:29

with that that domain so it's very easy

4:30

to find out let's say that you use an

4:33

email address with that domain that has

4:34

your address assigned to it well it very

4:37

easy for someone to actually figure out

4:39

who is sending these

4:40

emails so you want to have an email

4:43

address with. com that is a relatively

4:45

personalized that sounds like your

4:47

business it sounds like your name and

4:49

then have it not connected with your own

4:51

person or your own business and you it

4:53

should not be connected with a website

4:56

uh that's sort of how you can uh you

4:58

know save yourself these troubles the

5:01

way that that I uh chose to go about

5:04

this was to reach out to people and I

5:08

didn't even want to sell them anything I

5:09

would just reach out to people and say

5:11

hey I I saw something on your website

5:14

that could you know improve could could

5:16

be changed to improve um the amount of

5:20

you know uh leads they would get or

5:22

customers that would get so I would

5:23

basically reach out to these people in a

5:24

very short form saying hey I know what

5:27

you can change this website do you mind

5:29

if I send you a video um so that was

5:32

sort of the premise of these uh these

5:35

emails I'm going to go more into exactly

5:37

how I did it and how I uh how I made the

5:41

emails so actually to get the leads it's

5:44

sort of the first step right so and and

5:47

I believe that if you want to have any

5:49

kind of success with doing cold Outreach

5:51

you you should not be using um these

5:54

large lists of emails from these other

5:57

providers uh you need to curate your own

5:59

leads and the reason I believe that uh

6:02

is simply because well so many other

6:04

people are using the same list right so

6:06

the same people on these large lists

6:08

they get so many spam emails and they're

6:11

tired of it so that's right away they

6:13

can spot it then going to delete it now

6:15

you can try it out still see if it works

6:17

or not I just chose to go a different

6:19

direction with the way that I got my

6:22

leads so I use Google Maps and that's

6:24

also uh inspired by from someone on on

6:28

YouTube I think I can't remember the

6:29

YouTuber but anyway I was inspired by

6:31

Google Maps so basically what I would

6:34

do uh I had a I had actually a guy um in

6:39

Africa helping me with this and it's

6:41

something you can automate with a script

6:42

and I was kind of working on it but I

6:44

never actually finished it but anyway so

6:45

what I would do is I would give him a

6:47

keyword for Niche so this this could be

6:49

a window cleaner for example and I had

6:50

him go to a specific country that I

6:52

would Target they go go from the top to

6:55

bottom just take the whole country all

6:57

the cities and then move the the map a

7:00

little bit type in the keyword uh fetch

7:03

all the emails from the results put it

7:05

into spreadsheet so on and so forth for

7:08

a given country small country with about

7:11

6 million people I got about

7:15

um anywhere between 400 and 1,000

7:21

websites um so keep in mind this is

7:23

websites that he's getting just the URL

7:26

so about between 300 and 1,000 websites

7:29

for for a given Niche so for example I

7:30

believe for window cleaner I got like

7:32

600 for like uh Carpenters I got th000

7:35

and so on then I created the custom

7:39

scraper that would basically go into the

7:42

website download all the content on the

7:45

website so this was only the front

7:47

page uh and then it would save it and

7:50

then I would have uh created another

7:53

script using chat gbt the API read all

7:57

the content and then extract data data

8:01

such as uh the name if there was a name

8:04

because sometimes people they would put

8:05

their own personal name the email most

8:08

importantly because more often than not

8:10

they would actually put the email

8:11

address in the footer of the website and

8:14

the city or area and and other sort of

8:18

metrics um and that's important right to

8:21

to personalize the emails and make it

8:24

more sort of relevant for the person

8:26

because the email should appear like you

8:28

are sending this email to only one

8:31

person and not a thousand different

8:32

people

8:33

right and then not not all the time uh I

8:37

would get enough data from uh this jet

8:41

GPT it worked generally well but

8:43

sometime you would have to enrich the

8:44

data so I would have the same guy do

8:47

that so the total cost per lead was

8:50

around 30 cents for me uh that's sort of

8:54

the the the uh the amount that I ended

8:56

up actually paying per lead so that's

8:58

around 5 $100 for 1,700 leads that I

9:02

that I did I think I actually have more

9:03

than that um but that's at least the

9:06

amount that I I reached out to through

9:08

uh coal

9:10

Outreach so in terms of the the the

9:13

method that I use so so yeah I want to

9:15

sell a website but I I would not

9:17

actually include that in email so

9:19

basically I would just reach out to

9:20

people on email saying hey I saw

9:21

something on on the website that I think

9:23

you can improve do you mind if I send

9:25

you a video so the video I would do if

9:29

they say yes yes and I'm going to show

9:30

you the results later so if they said

9:32

yes to the video basically what I would

9:34

do is I would make a video similar to

9:36

this and just go through the website

9:38

just scrolling through we website and

9:39

then give them some feedback and

9:41

typically I I would give them feedback

9:43

on how they can get more visitors onto

9:46

the website like from typically through

9:49

SEO right and then how can they get more

9:52

of their existing visitors to contact

9:54

them so how they can they increase the

9:56

conversion rate so that's sort of the

9:58

two areas and typically it would

10:01

probably take me like 30 minutes at

10:04

least to um make the video and then cut

10:07

it down so that's kind of a problem of

10:12

this method because it took so long time

10:14

to actually do that right especially if

10:15

you're going to do a lot of videos so

10:17

around took me around 30 minutes maybe

10:18

more to actually do a video and then I

10:21

would put it on YouTube as a hidden

10:22

video and then send them that link later

10:25

I switch over to do loom and just do

10:28

like a 2minute video video but around

10:30

that time I kind of stopped it so I

10:33

don't really have that many results

10:35

doing shorter videos of Just 2 minutes

10:39

but the long form videos around 10

10:40

minutes that worked really well and I

10:42

can see in YouTube that some of the

10:44

videos don't get any views so they

10:46

actually don't see it at all but some

10:48

videos videos they actually get a lot of

10:50

views they get like four five six views

10:52

so you can see that they come again and

10:53

actually look through the video so it

10:55

does provide value for them I believe

10:57

and a lot of people they reached out to

10:58

me so hey this is really nice really

11:00

happy about it and and I believe it's

11:01

something that they really could use so

11:04

it's about providing value right without

11:05

asking for anything and then what I

11:08

would do is at the end of the video so I

11:09

would record like this exactly like this

11:12

at the end of the video I would

11:13

basically say hey um what I would like

11:16

to offer you is a free redesign of your

11:20

front page so you can see how some of

11:22

these things that are just talk about in

11:24

the video can be implemented right so in

11:26

a video I would highlight sort of the

11:28

issue the things that can improve and

11:30

then at the end of the video I would

11:32

give them sort of a a solution to the

11:35

problems by creating a free uh design in

11:39

figma so what I would do is I reached

11:42

out to a web design on on upwork had a

11:45

design made for about I think

11:47

$200 so it basically just reuse the same

11:49

design modified myself change the colors

11:52

change the pictures some change some

11:54

stuff in there so it's truly unique

11:56

right and that's basically the design

11:57

that I would send to

11:59

uh the people that that eventually ended

12:02

up saying yes to the design so that was

12:04

sort of the the the method uh that I

12:07

used and then uh the actual email copy

12:10

was super simple it was just two lines

12:12

basically just saying hey I saw

12:13

something on the website that I believe

12:16

can be changed so you can get more you

12:18

know uh leads basically do you mind that

12:21

I sent you a video explaining 100% free

12:25

and a lot of people they say yet yes so

12:27

let me go back to the let me show you

12:29

the results of the the campaign all

12:32

right so the video is about uh 10

12:34

minutes long now so I'm going to cut it

12:36

here and then upload another video with

12:38

all the results from this cold Outreach

12:42

so that should be uploaded already so

12:43

check that out as well see you

Interactive Summary

Ask follow-up questions or revisit key timestamps.

The video discusses a web agency owner's experience with cold outreach for their "websites as a service" business. They detail their strategy, which involved sending 1,700 emails, primarily focusing on the legalities of cold outreach in the EU due to GDPR. The owner explains the potential fines, which can be substantial, and advises on methods to maintain anonymity, such as using a separate domain and email address. The approach to generating leads involved using Google Maps to find businesses and then employing custom scrapers and the GPT API to gather information for personalized emails. Instead of directly selling, the owner offered to send a video critique of the prospect's website, focusing on improvements for SEO and conversion rates. This video, often around 10 minutes long, would highlight issues and suggest solutions. As a next step, they offered a free redesign of the front page, often using a pre-made Figma design modified for uniqueness. While this method provided value and led to some positive responses, the time investment for creating personalized videos was significant. The owner ultimately stopped cold outreach, suggesting it may not be worth the effort for their business model.
