Email Marketing Tutorial For Beginners
481 segments
So, if you're completely new to email
marketing and really not sure where to
start, I'm going to walk you through
step-by-step everything that you need to
know from building an email list to
sending your first campaign and
automating all of your emails. So, let's
jump in. Now, for the purpose of this
tutorial, I'm going to be using a tool
called Brevo. There are tons of email
marketing softwares and apps that are
out there. This is one that I just
personally like and have used and find
it very user-friendly. But, no matter
what app that you're using, whether it
be Mailchimp or Brevo or another one,
these principles will all still apply.
Just where they're located in the app
might be a little bit different, but the
basic framework for what we're doing
today is going to be available to you in
any of these CRM or email marketing
tools.
So, the first thing that we're going to
do is set up an account. So, on Brevo's
website, if you go to brevo.com,
it'll take you to this landing page and
right there up front, you'll see a
button for signing up free. So, you can
click on that and it'll take you up to a
page like this and you can either sign
in with your Google or Apple account or
just add an email and create a password
and click on create your account. Now,
in my case, I already have an account,
so I'm going to sign in from there. Now,
when you land on the home page here,
it's going to kind of walk you through
some of the initial steps to get
started, which we're going to talk about
as we go and you can see how much you're
using in your plan and some of the
dashboard items like that.
So, once you've familiarized yourself
with your dashboard, we're going to next
head over to the CRM and let's talk
about your contact list. Your contact
list is really the through-line of your
email marketing campaign. And truly,
this is what makes email marketing so
powerful is as you build this list, you
own this. This isn't like when you post
on social media and you're depending on
the algorithm to show your information
to people that might be interested in
this. This list, although it may start
small at the beginning, it'll grow over
time and it's something that you can
take with you. No matter what program
you're using or software that you're
using to send out the emails, this is
your list. You can import and export it
as you need to. And the other key thing
about this is this list is not just a
bunch of random emails. These are people
that have shown some interest in your
company, whether it be past clients or
customers, whether it be people that
that were interested and wanted more
information from you, whether it be
people that you networked with in person
and you got your their business cards or
anything like that. This is where all of
that information will lie. So, from
here, you can certainly just add in any
contacts that you have manually. You
just go up here to create contact and
you fill in the information here. And
then you also have the option to add SMS
or their telephone number, WhatsApp,
landline, anything like that because
that's an add-on. That's something you
can also incorporate is text messaging
your contacts. In this case, what we're
focused on is just email. So, you can
add some other information, your contact
time zones, job titles. And then you can
also add them to a list, which we'll
talk about here in just a second. And
you can just walk through here and kind
of add in as much or as little
information as you want. In particular,
I would say you need your their name and
their email address. And then you just
click on create. And sometimes you need
to just refresh the screen to have that
pop up. And there you go. There's Bob
Smith and of course mine in here as well
since that's what the account's created
under. And so, you can just add your
contacts that way. The other option is
if you go up here to import contacts,
you can click on that. And from here, if
you have your contacts in another server
or in another list, you can import them
here as well. Now, as your list grows,
one of the things that I recommend right
from the beginning is start creating
lists or categories to keep your
contacts in.
This is much easier to do when you have
just a handful of emails and it'll set
yourself up for success later versus
having thousands of emails and having to
go through and try to remember where
everybody fits into.
And the reason for this is the lists are
used when you set up campaigns to email
those and you want to email different
segments. So, let's go over here to the
lists.
And we're going to just start by
creating a couple of lists. So, we're
going to create a list
and we're going to call this first one
we're going to call this first list
current customers and then you can also
add it to a folder.
So, add that. And then we're going to
create a new one called future customers
and so on. So, I would recommend at
least starting out with those types of
groups because that's an easy division.
People that have already done business
with you are going to get one type of
email saying, "Hey, thanks for being a
customer. Here's a loyalty discount.
Here's something that we're rolling out
to people that have already bought our
service or products before." And then
you have another group of of people that
have never done business with you and
you're going to have introductory offers
and you're going to have information of
why they should do business with you and
that sort of thing. But, another
recommendation is maybe you just have a
group of people that want to sign up for
your newsletter. That would be a
separate list. Maybe you have certain
lead magnets that people came into your
list with. You can set up lists that
way, okay? So, so far we've been talking
about how you add your contacts into
your list. Let's talk about how to have
it set up so that people can add
themselves to your list. So, we're going
to go down here to marketing and we're
going to go to forms
and here we can create a sign-up form.
This is great, especially for
newsletters or if you have a blog or
something like that that people want to
be a part of, they can sign up for
themselves. So, here in the forms, we're
going to create a sign-up form. So, you
can see within Brevo, you can create a
full page or embedded form, so that
would be live on your website or
something like that. And then you also
have a pop-up, which is, as you can see
it says professional, that's part of the
professional package that you'll need to
pay for. For our purposes, we're just
going to do the full page embedded and
we're going to call this newsletter.
Very common reason for people to want to
sign up for your list. We won't get into
too much detail about the design
elements, but you certainly add your
colors and your fonts and your logos and
all of that sort of thing, but the basic
form of this is to be able to go,
they'll see it's a newsletter, subscribe
to our newsletter and stay up-to-date
and then where they'll add the email in
there and subscribe. And you can see
here, you can make this as complicated
or as simple as you want. You can add
additional questions or checkboxes,
multiple choice, have you been here
before, what types of products do you
like to to purchase, those sorts of
things.
And then you click next and then you can
have these automatically categorized for
you. So, you can see down here we have
our current customers and future
customers. I'm going to create a list,
we're going to call this
newsletter,
so that we know these people are
specifically here for the newsletter.
We're going to create that. And another
thing to note is that you can have
people in multiple lists. Maybe you have
people that are current customers that
also want to sign up for your newsletter
and maybe you have people that have not
done business with you that want to be
on your newsletter. You can have them in
multiple lists. So, there's really no
sky's the limit as far as creating lists
that go. So, select the list that you
want them to go to, click next, and then
from here you can have a confirmation
email that's sent out to them or just
going to do the simple confirmation
and
default confirmation. You can design
these yourselves and make those more
elaborate. We'll talk more about that as
we go. So, we'll click next, and then
they have the information that will go
out in that message. Click next, and
then this gives you all the information
to be able to post this. So, you have
your embedded version. Just copy and
paste this into your web builder or send
it to your web developer to be able to
put that on your website. You also have
a link here that you can copy and send
this out. And you can also create a QR
code. So, if you have like a
brick-and-mortar store or business
cards, you want to put the QR code on
there for people to just snap a photo
and it'll take them directly to that
sign-up page so that you can get their
email that way as well. And then we'll
click done. So, now we have our first
form. So, this is another way of
capturing emails and capturing people's
contact information automatically. And
by the way, in case you're wondering,
email marketing isn't dead, despite what
people might be saying.
I think the old playbook is a little bit
obsolete. So, what we did is we put
together a free toolkit for you that
pulls data from 600-plus email marketers
and gives you a dashboard and expert
frameworks and playbooks and AI
strategies to actually grow your list
and stay out of the spam folder. Plus,
it's completely free. So, all you need
to do is just click the link in the
description below, and it's all yours.
So, next, let's talk about creating your
email template. So, now we've got a list
of people to send emails out to. Now
we're ready to start sending them
emails. So, what we're going to do is
we're going to go up here to templates
in the marketing tool,
and they already have a couple of
templates that are sort of preloaded,
unsubscribing, final confirmation,
sample confirmation, things like that.
And you can look through those and
customize them as you need to. But we're
going to go up here to create template,
and we want to create an email template.
And then this is basically the structure
in which you will be creating your
emails under. So, you'll want to include
your sender email. I would recommend
setting that up as a general bucket
email, whether that be info or contact
or something like that.
And then you can add a sender name,
which right now it's just my company
name. I think it always works better if
you have an actual name, so we're going
to put my name in here so that it looks
like it is a personal email from me.
And then you're going to create the
subject line. The key to a subject line
is you want to get entice people to open
up the email. You don't want it to
always be salesy. You don't want it to
always be, "Hey, here's this offer. Do
this." because there's tons of those.
You want to think of like subject lines
that are going to get people interested
in opening out this. Such as, "I want to
share this amazing idea with you."
What's the amazing idea? Well, you got
to click on the email to open that up.
And then you can add your text to what
you want to say in the message, and then
you can go down here to the advanced
settings where you can tag this. Once
you get more of them, you want to keep
them organized, know where they're
going.
Uh you can add folders, things like that
to be able to get more information. And
then we're just going to go up here to
preview and test. And then over here
we're going to add the content. And then
from here you can scroll through all
these different templates that they have
available to you, some basic templates
ready to use, and see one that you like.
Let's say I like this one. We'll use
that template. And then all of this is
customizable, okay? So, you can add your
logo in here. You can add your tagline,
put your pictures, your information, and
add that through there. And once it's
the way that you want it, you just go
save and quit. And then you'll have that
design will be embedded on your email as
you go. And we're going to go up here to
save, and then you can see our template
in there. So, now anytime you want to
send out an email, you can just jump in
there. You have the template pre-made,
add in the specific information that
you're wanting to share with people, and
you're good to go. So, the next thing
we're going to do is set up our
campaign. This is the through-line of
your emails that you're going to be
setting. So, we're going to go up to
campaigns up here, and what we want to
create is an email campaign.
Again, you can also have the option to
do text messaging or WhatsApp, anything
like that. Then obviously, you just need
a campaign name. So, let's say this is
new customer onboarding. So, we'll
create campaign, and then again, you can
customize who that's coming from, and
then you'll go through, you'll add your
recipients that you want, your subject
line for this campaign, and the design.
And just like we did for the individual
emails, you can use these templates or
create a new template, and be able to
design everything that you need to do
and get all your information in there.
So, you just click on use the template,
and it's all customizable about what
information you want to have in there.
Now, some types of emails that are
really great to send is you don't want
to all your emails to be buy this now,
sign up for this, do this, do this, do
this. You always want to think about
what sort of value can I add for my
customers? So, giving them, "Hey, here's
the top five tips that I found in XYZ
trade or whatever that you happen to be
in." Or give them updates about new
products that you have. Again, not
necessarily saying, "Hey, buy this." but
just going, "Hey, I have this available,
and I think it really help you out.
Those types of emails are much more
engaging, much more apt to get people to
interact with your company than just
hey, buy this, give me money now. And
once you have all the information in
there, you can preview it, so you can
see exactly how it's going to show up in
their inbox, so you know exactly what
they're going to be getting. You can
also send a test email, so you can have
this come to yourself, so you can
actually see what it looks like in your
inbox, how you open it up, what buttons
you can click on and interact with it.
And I typically always do this before I
send out any emails or new campaign,
just to make sure that I know
everything's going to work before I send
it out to hundreds of people. Then once
you have all the in needed information
in here, then you click on schedule. And
so you've got a couple of different
options up here. You can send it right
now if you are ready to send those out.
You can send later, or there's a couple
AI options in here as well. We're going
to so go send later, and let's say I
want this to go out on Monday morning,
and let's do 8:00 a.m. and go schedule.
Now that campaign will go out, and it'll
start sending out those emails
at that time. Now, the other thing that
I want to draw your attention to is in
your campaigns here, now you've got some
really valuable data that's going to be
available to you once those emails start
going out. You can see how many people
are getting the emails, how many people
are opening them, how many people are
clicking on there, unsubscribing, all
that great information, so that your
next campaign you can make it a little
bit different and tweak it even more.
Now I want to just touch on just briefly
automations here, which is another
really powerful tool that kind of does
this for you. So if somebody clicks on a
lead magnet and signs up for your
newsletter or something like that, then
you can automate that so they
immediately get some emails. So we'll go
in here to automations, we'll go create
our first automation, and we're going to
go create automation, and they have some
pre-built automations in here that
probably make sense. Let's go to the
welcome message just so you can see what
this is. So, here's the basic layout
that it's going to do. We're going to
create this automation, and then you can
customize this as you want. So, contact
added to a list, we're going to go here
to the first list. We will say we they
add themselves to the newsletter, okay?
Then we go next, and then it has wait 2
days. So, we don't want it to be 2 days,
we want it to be say 1 minute. Click
next. So, somebody has seen that form,
they entered their email, 1 minute later
it's going to send them this welcome
email. And again, you can customize
this. If you click on edit, add your
logo, add your information. Hey, thanks
for signing up for the newsletter. Just
want to confirm we got your email and
we're ready to go. And you see what it's
going to do. It's going to create a
subject line adding their first name,
preview text, email coming from them,
and you go confirm, and then it'll exit
that. So, you can create these
automations for anything. If somebody
abandons their shopping cart, or it
could be, you know, you get off a Zoom
call with somebody, you have this email
go out. You create these automations so
that you can set it and then you don't
need to worry about it again. It'll take
care of it all for you. So, we're going
to exit out of that editor, activate
automation, and it's going to do all
this for you. And then we're just going
to hop back to our home screen here. And
what's really nice in this day and age
with AI is you don't have to be a
marketing expert to really get a lot out
of email marketing. There are AI tools
that are built right into Brevo as well
as Mailchimp and all the other tools
that really help you customize this and
create the best subject line to get
people to click on that, or the types of
email, or even the frequency that you
should send these out in. And so, like
anything else, once you get the tool and
you find the tool that you like, just
let the data inform how you move
forward, and you will be well on your
way to being an email marketing expert.
