Apple didn't plan this. The Mac Mini became an AI workstation.

Let's now focus on Apple. As John Ternus
is set to take the reins of the tech
giant next week. He takes over from
long-time CEO Tim Cook. Let's discuss
what Apple investors should expect under
John Ternus. I want to bring in Bob
O'Donnell, president of Technalysis
Research. Bob, good morning to you. I
mean
>> Good morning, Brooke.
>> This seems like when it was announced, I
can't believe now it's it's just around
the corner. This weekend really, next
week rather. So, what will an Apple
under John Ternus be like compared to
Tim Cook as a as a hardware kind of
focus guy?
>> Yeah, well, it's a great question,
Brooke. And and by the way, first of
all, thank you for having me.
Look, Ternus is a hardware focus guy.
He's been at the company a long time.
He's been behind the scenes on a lot of
products they've developed over the last
few years. But, he also, I think, has
that product vision that as great as Tim
Cook was at a lot of things, that's not
what he was known for, right? And in
fact, you know, if you remember back to
when Tim Cook came in, that was one of
the big questions like, oh, wait, this
guy doesn't have the product vision.
going to do this? Well, obviously, they
figured a way. But, Ternus does kind of
bring back that kind of notion of a of
visionary leader Jobs-ish. Of course,
people are going to make those
comparisons
with a vision of where things are going
to go. And so, I think you're going to
see that start to play out. And the
timing is kind of appropriate cuz we've
got coming up, you know, they just
announced they sent out the invites
yesterday for the Apple event, which
will be on, you know, early September.
And it's widely expected to see the
first foldable iPhone. That's a big
deal.
Later this year, maybe even at that
event, we're expecting to see the first
touchscreen Mac. I mean, these are
things that Apple people have been like,
oh my gosh, you know, what a big deal.
But, above and beyond that, I think
we're going to start to see even new
product categories. And the big thing
from a Ternus perspective, I think, you
know, we're not going to see it
overnight, but over the next 18 months,
2 years or so, we'll probably see some
pretty interesting revolutionary product
categories, which Apple hasn't created a
new one in a very long time.
>> Right, right. So, this is certainly
something to watch out for, and it'll
only be 8 days after he takes the helm.
So, certainly setting the stage right up
front. I think something else that I've
been reading in in so many different
investors' notes is this need for Apple
to really play into this
dominance of AI error, so to say. How
important is it that John gets this
right within the first few months,
especially as they look to unveil in
beta form that Siri AI?
>> Uh well, it's a huge deal. He's, you
know, this is a critical factor for
Apple. Now, look, the good news is,
despite all the issues and and concerns
people have raised, for mainstream
users, which remember is the bulk of who
Apple appeals to, AI is still pretty
new, and they're just figuring it out.
And so, it's perfectly fine if, indeed,
this next version of Siri hits it on the
mark, which a lot of people, early signs
are that it's pretty decent. So, it
looks,
you know, reasonably good right now. And
that is important. And then, I think
we're going to see, as I started to to
mention, him driving new types of
products that AI can take advantage of.
We've seen discussions around glasses
and other elements and that where you
can start to think of these things as AI
accessories as much as mainstream
computing devices. And so, we're going
to see a different view of of cameras as
sensors and earbuds as sensors and and
all these different things. Now, big
privacy concerns and and the real trick
will be how does Apple in particular
navigate those issues, which, of course,
have been a big blocking point for Meta
and other folks trying to do glasses as
one product example. But, I do think
it's important. I think we're going to
see them talk about it. We're also going
to see them start to position Macs, the
new Macs they just introduced earlier
this week, which was kind of a surprise
um are being positioned as these AI
personal AI work station type devices.
That's a growing new category and it
turns out Apple's playing a role in even
though they kind of didn't really intend
to when those first Mac minis came out
but now that's becoming a big deal. So
all of these things play into that big
picture vision around AI and what Apple
can do with it.
>> Mac minis and these Mac studios as we
were just saying showing on the screen
there. It's interesting cuz it seems
like the demand is maybe even stronger
that they initially had anticipated and
Bob piece this all together for us
because we're also hearing about the
surge in memory cost and that's sort of
changing the way that consumers are
thinking about where and what and how
much they want to buy and spend. So is
this demand maybe even stronger than you
had expected?
>> Well, it certainly is and what's
interesting again when the Mac mini came
out it was just positioned as sort of a
simple you know straightforward desktop
computer but what a few folks figured
out a little while ago is that hey
I can run open claw on these advanced AI
agentic harnesses on them which
basically means I can run these advanced
AI workflows and do them within my own
devices and that's something that Apple
didn't expect a lot of people didn't
expect but all of a sudden became this
secondary opportunity for the Mac mini
and now they're playing a you know whole
hog into that. They're really pushing
forward. It is challenging. It is
expensive because frankly to do those
things you need 32 gigs of memory or
higher that makes these prices extremely
high as far as a mainstream product but
I think right now a lot of the
excitement around those categories of
products the Mac minis and and the Mac
studios are frankly on higher end users
perhaps in some corporate development
environments for developers. So it's not
necessarily a mainstream product yet and
so they're not quite as sensitive to
those prices but for the folks who are
looking to do these advanced AI
applications and run them locally, this
is a very interesting new opportunity
for Apple and a a way to get into AI
that a lot of people didn't initially
expect.
>> Bob and Don, thank you so much for
breaking it all down. I appreciate it
and I know we'll talk to you when John
takes the helm next week. Appreciate it.

The video discusses the upcoming transition of Apple leadership to John Ternus. Analyst Bob O'Donnell highlights Ternus's background as a hardware-focused, visionary leader who may steer Apple toward new product categories, potentially including foldable iPhones and touchscreen Macs. The discussion also covers the critical importance of AI for Apple, particularly the evolution of Siri, and how Apple is inadvertently finding success by positioning its Mac mini and Mac Studio devices as high-end, local AI workstations despite rising memory costs.
