end of this video. Now, a bit of an

introduction. Yes, my title says

director, but that is honestly just a

fancy way to say coach. So, what that

means is I coach all of my students

one-on-one, and I'm personally

responsible for making sure they get the

outcomes that they're looking for from

the program. So, they get to learn about

my background and where I come from.

Now, I moved to this country about uh I

would say 13 years ago now,

and I went to UBC engineering. And since

then, I've spent a lot of my time in

0:39

startups. So, just before TKS, I was a

startup advisor at UBC, and I worked

0:43

with scientists and engineers uh to

0:45

figure out, "Hey, you know, how do we

0:46

take these inventions that they've spent

0:48

a lot of time building and actually make

0:50

companies out of it?" I worked with

0:51

maybe 300 so far in lots of different

0:53

capacities, so I've learned everything

0:55

there is to know about taking a company

0:57

all the way from scratch and scaling it

0:59

to millions. Um so, the reason or the

way I found out about TKS was actually

1:04

quite random. And it all starts off with

this message.

Now, this is a cool message. This is all

that I saw, and it was quite intriguing

cuz I don't get a lot of 16-year-olds uh

1:14

you know, uh message me out of the blue.

And then I remember getting on the phone

with him, and I was just blown away. How

is someone at the age of 16 or 17

1:22

thinking about startups or thinking

1:23

about climate change and thinking about

1:24

these problems? And I I was a little bit

1:26

puzzled. You know, when I was 16, I was

1:28

just really busy uh playing video games

1:29

and studying and not doing really much.

1:31

So, I was I was This is a This is a

1:32

really weird experience of talking to

1:34

somebody that

1:35

almost feels like I was talking to a

1:37

founder that I I normally work with.

And then, when asking her like, "How do

1:40

you know about all this?" she said she

1:42

went to TKS.

1:43

And I was like, "I have to know more.

1:44

Like, you know, please, you know, invite

1:46

me to come to your session. I want to

1:47

see what it's like." And then I came to

1:48

session and I saw, my gosh, she's just

1:50

one out of 30. There were so many

1:52

students there working on things like

1:53

AI, you know, gene editing, personalized

1:55

medicine. I even had a kid there work on

1:57

micro needles, which is a technology

1:59

that I was working on early in my

2:00

career. So, it was just really bizarre

to see that this is community of young

2:04

kids that just want to do more in the

2:06

world, right? And so, it's really at the

2:08

heart of what TKS is about.

And, you know, before I get into more

2:12

details of the program, there's one more

2:13

thing I want to talk about, which has

completely changed the world over the

2:16

last couple years, and that's AI. So,

the CEO of Anthropic, and it's important

to understand his perspective cuz it

gives us a window into what the world

might look like over the next couple

My guess, and I'm still not certain of

it, but I think with some of the things

we've seen with with models starting to

be as good as PhD students in in areas

like math and programming and biology,

it is my guess [music] that by 2026 or

2027 we will have AI systems that are

broadly better than almost all humans at

at at at almost all things.

When I saw this video, I was a little

bit terrified to be like, "Oh my

goodness, how are we now going to train

3:16

our students for the future, right?" All

3:18

the playbooks that we've learned about

3:19

what it means to prepare students for

3:20

the future kind of becomes almost a

3:23

little bit obsolete because now AI is is

3:25

in a position to do so many of the tasks

3:28

that we once thought were that could not

3:30

be automated, things like software

3:31

engineering, data science, art and

3:33

music. And so, all the fields right now

3:35

we have are are heavily being impacted

3:37

by AI.

And so, what I want us to walk through

3:40

over the next 20 minutes is I want you

3:42

to

3:43

really reconcile, okay, this is where

3:45

the world is going, and how is what

3:47

we're learning at TKS going to really

3:48

support your students or your kid um,

3:51

really find their place in future.

3:53

And so the really the core mindset that

I want to, uh, really train our students

3:57

is thriving over adapting. So I don't

want your kids to adapt. I don't want

4:01

kids to just survive, right? I want them

4:03

to be able to leverage all of these

4:05

technologies and no matter how the world

4:06

changes, I want them to figure out how

4:08

to leverage it and actually make things

4:10

happen in the world and create

4:11

opportunity.

So today I'm actually going to go

through the very specific details of how

4:15

we're going to be doing that over the

4:16

next 10 months.

Okay, so some, uh, a few bits of

important information just in a

4:21

nutshell. TKS is like a 10-month, I call

it like a human accelerator, right? Um,

4:27

I want to accelerate who they are as a

4:28

human being by the end of 10 months. And

4:30

really develop them to become these

4:32

all-rounded individuals that can thrive

4:34

no matter how the world changes.

4:36

Uh, it starts in September 2026, ends

4:38

June 2027.

The session, the format is weekly

4:41

sessions along with one-on-ones and the

4:43

weekly sessions are on the weekends, 3

hours, uh, in person.

Uh, we were actually founded in 2016, so

we're celebrating 10 years of TKS, which

4:51

is so sick. We've had, it's uh, maybe

4:53

close to 7,000 alumni right now, Ashley,

4:55

uh, doing all sorts of cool things in

4:56

the world. And so we've seen this

4:58

process work.

Even my, so I've been doing this for

about 4 years and this is going to be my

5:02

fifth year coaching students. So I've,

5:04

you know, I've coached maybe 400

5:06

students in my time. And I've seen

5:08

firsthand this process work. Now we're

5:10

actually all across the globe, New York,

5:12

Toronto, Dubai, Vancouver, Calgary, San

Francisco, um, and then we have a

5:15

virtual program, so we've, we've been

5:17

doing this for a while and we're all

5:18

across the globe.

So fundamentally, here are the four

5:22

things that we train, right? We train

5:24

knowledge, skills, network building, and

5:26

mindsets. So our belief is if they have

5:29

these four things, no matter how the

5:31

world changes, they will be successful.

5:33

So let me break down what each one of

5:35

these mean.

So the way we do those four is through

5:38

all of these different vehicles. So

5:40

sessions, one-on-one coaching with me,

5:41

our global community, challenges,

5:43

mentors, guest speakers, so on and so

5:45

forth. So I'm going to break it down one

5:46

by one.

So, when your kid joins TKS, or if you,

5:50

if you're a student watching this, join

TKS, really the first step is exposure,

right? I know most students coming to

5:55

TKS, they're really ambitious, they're

5:57

excited to do things in the world, but

5:58

sometimes they're like, "Where do I

5:59

Where do I Where do I start, right? What

am I passionate about?" is the big

6:02

question a lot of students ask. When in

6:03

reality, that is the wrong question to

6:05

ask. It's not about what's my passion,

6:07

it's about following your curiosity

6:09

instead. So, that's what we do. I expose

6:11

students to a bunch of different topics.

6:13

And that's actually what happens in

6:14

sessions. So, every week we do sessions

6:16

on on different kinds of topics, AI,

6:18

gene editing,

6:20

uh um the business, problem-solving,

6:22

hackathons. There's like 35 different

6:23

kinds of sessions. So, really we're

6:25

developing a holistic mindset, both from

6:28

technology

6:29

and also like as a human being, just

6:31

developing them to be really effective

6:33

uh human beings, right?

6:36

The other way that we allow students to

6:37

really explore in their first weeks six

6:39

weeks at TKS is called the explore

6:41

process.

6:42

So, to give you a sense of what that

6:43

looks like is every student at TKS gets

6:45

access to this platform called TKS Life.

6:47

It's our internal software platform.

6:49

And this is where kids can explore all

6:51

sorts of different topics. So, just to

6:53

give you an example, uh if I pick

6:55

brain-computer interfaces, they can get

6:57

a sense of what this world is like. This

6:59

is a a really fast and quick way to get

7:01

exposed to as many different

7:03

technologies as possible in a short span

7:05

of time.

>> So, that's the explore phase. Figure out

what you're curious about, watch a bunch

of videos, and see just what sparks your

7:19

curiosity. You don't have to commit to

7:20

something, but just figure out, "Hmm,

what What are you more interested in

than others?" Right?

7:26

So, that's what I just showed you. And

then once they've picked a particular

7:29

area that they want to spend a bit more

7:31

time in, then we enter something called

7:33

the focus process.

A simple way to think about the focus

process is this T. We want students to

7:37

have a breadth of knowledge, and this is

7:39

why we do sessions all across the board

7:40

across different topics, but then, I

7:42

want them to build expertise in one

7:45

topic, right? I don't want to be, you

7:46

know, the the jack-of-all-trades. I I

7:48

want them to build mastery in one topic.

7:50

So, it's a bit of both. I want them to

7:51

be a jack-of-all-trades and be a master

7:53

of one versus none, right?

7:56

And so, that's what that looks like.

They're exploring and they're then

7:58

narrowing down what they're interested

in. And then, the hope is by the end of

8:01

10 months, they've built enough skills

8:03

that they're actually able to build

8:05

something that new that doesn't exist

8:06

yet. So, that's what happens at the very

end. So, let me give you an example. So,

let's say a student comes in, they're

8:11

interested in VR. They explore VR, do

8:13

the explore modules, and they realize,

8:14

you know what? That's not really my my

8:16

thing. Then, they move on to AI and they

8:18

realize, you know what? Oh my god, this

8:19

is what I'm really interested in. Then,

8:21

that's what they spend their time doing

8:23

for the next 8 months.

And we follow a four-step process called

the learn, replicate, replicate, create.

I won't go too much into depth, but it's

8:29

simply a process for them to start small

8:31

and then incrementally build their

8:33

knowledge in that field. So, that by the

8:34

end of it, they've actually built enough

8:36

skills and they can create something on

8:38

their own, right?

8:40

Now, we've done this, as I mentioned,

for 10 years. So, we've seen this

8:42

process work, right?

8:44

Like we have like tens of thousands of

8:45

projects that students have built and

8:47

they've leveraged that to get into top

8:48

companies, uh to work at companies like

8:50

LinkedIn, or SpaceX, um NASA, and like

8:54

literally any company you can think of,

8:55

or even or even getting into top

8:57

universities. It all comes down to the

8:59

projects that they build built in the

9:01

process.

So, there's Adam who founded Thirdweb,

uh there's Alishba who um did a lot of

9:07

work in robotics. We have Briana who was

9:09

in General Fusion, uh Ben Nashman who

9:11

actually created the world's first

9:13

non-invasive glucose device and has

9:15

raised like 20, you know, maybe 30 or 40

9:17

million dollars um for his company. And

9:19

Ananya also was an early intern at

9:21

Neuralink. But all of them, when they

9:22

first started, was at TKS. And when they

9:25

were at TKS, they built projects to

9:27

showcase competency. Now, when you're

9:29

thinking about being employed, right?

9:31

What do employers really care about?

9:32

They care about, can you get the job

9:34

done? And what is the evidence of it?

9:35

And then, that's how we think about the

9:37

project building process at TKS.

9:40

So, the question I get a lot now is,

"Okay, Pranav, they've selected their

9:42

focus. Now, how do you support the kid?

9:44

You know, they don't know anything about

9:45

about this field. So, how do they get

9:46

the support

9:48

uh to build a lot of these things?" So,

9:49

number one is alumni community.

9:51

Now, the beauty of the alumni community

9:53

is we have students across the globe

9:56

that have actually built a lot of the

9:57

projects. So, once you become an alumni,

9:59

you're actually a permanent part of the

community. And so, a lot of our students

10:02

leverage alumni who have already worked

10:04

on these projects to get support along

10:05

the way as well. And within the

10:07

platform, there's lots of ways to find

10:08

out who's working on what and get the

10:10

support that they need.

The second is me, right? Um I'm an

10:14

engineer by trade, and I have seen every

10:17

single project there is across all

10:19

different technologies. So, I have a

10:20

really clear understanding of what it

10:21

takes to get a student from zero all the

10:23

way to 100 in the project that they're

10:24

working on.

And it's not just me. We're actually a

10:27

team of directors. Uh for example,

10:30

Brandon was a SpaceX engineer who went

10:31

to MIT. Um Andres uh also is an

10:34

engineer. We have Jenav, who actually

10:36

built a $50 million company. So, all the

10:37

directors are actually not teachers. We

10:40

are people in industry that made the

10:41

conscious decision to come join an

10:43

education company cuz we really care

10:44

about the mission, right? We also have

10:46

access to a bunch of mentors on our

10:48

online platform that anyone can access.

Um and so, they are really supported all

10:53

along the way as they develop their

10:55

focus.

So, this is just just to give you an

idea, I just took one screenshot of uh

And so, just give you an example, Anna

Baird, who's right here. Uh she actually

runs Google's go-to-market strategy

across the globe for AI.

Right? And so, you have people with even

their calendar links directly here

because they want students to like book

time, and they want to be supported.

They want to support students as they

11:22

build all these interesting projects.

So, this is just one of about 200

mentors we have on the platform.

Now, the only caveat is the way they get

11:28

access to platform is they have to build

11:31

two projects first.

11:33

Only then can they access the mentors

11:35

and the intention here is we don't want

11:37

students just to message mentors being

11:38

like, "Hey, I don't know what to do. Can

11:39

you help me?" It's much more effective

11:42

if they say, "Hey, I built this project.

11:43

This is kind of what I've learned and

11:44

these are the questions I have. Are you

11:46

open to getting on a call?" That would

11:47

be a much higher leverage meeting and a

11:49

higher impact meeting than just saying,

11:50

"I'm interested in a topic." Right? So,

11:52

really coaching students how to think

11:53

for themselves and build competency

11:55

along the way through this process.

Now, here's what we've actually learned

in the process though. A lot of students

don't actually end up using this

12:01

platform. Now, it's not because this is,

12:03

you know, not enough mentors, but it's

12:05

because we got really good at teaching

12:07

kids how to do the cold outreach

12:09

themselves. To me, I'd rather teach the

12:11

kids how to fish, right? So, that even

12:14

after TKS, they are or they have the

12:16

opportunity or they know exactly how to

12:18

attract any opportunity themselves and

12:20

they know how to reach out to anybody

12:21

they want to talk to. So, if there is a

12:23

researcher at Stanford that they're

12:24

really interested in talking to, they'll

12:26

now have the courage and the tools to

12:28

just directly email them, right?

12:30

Uh so, that's what we do a lot of.

Now,

this is actually an important part of

12:35

the process to talk about, which is

12:36

Velocity.

Now, Velocity is a separate program,

12:39

still included within the tuition at

12:40

TKS. It's not an extra cost program, but

12:42

Velocity is a program for some of my for

12:45

students that want to take TKS very,

12:47

very seriously and they want to commit

12:49

to it as their primary thing.

So, when students are in Velocity, I

12:52

make them do lots of extra things. And

12:55

the way I think about it, it's like

12:56

you're going to the gym, you know, TKS

12:57

is like going to the gym and Velocity is

12:59

like you are ready to get a personal

trainer and you're ready to set very

13:02

clear goals and you're ready to work

13:03

extremely, extremely hard. So, anyone

13:06

can join Velocity anytime, but if they

13:08

join Velocity, they have strict

13:09

requirements that they have to keep.

They have to think do things like weekly

13:12

goal setting. They have to do LinkedIn

13:14

outreaches. They have to do workouts.

13:15

They have to do listen to podcasts. They

13:17

have to do daily updates. I'm just going

13:18

to show you what a few of these look

like.

So, this is what a tracker looks like.

Every week, students are telling me what

13:24

their end of TKS goal is. They're

13:25

telling me what they did last week. They

13:27

tell me what they did this week, they

13:28

tell me about the meetings they had with

13:30

um with external people with external

13:32

parties, and then I'm hearing a bit of a

self-reflection from the articles they

13:36

listen to and whatnot. So, I hear this

from every student.

They also have to do daily updates. So,

13:42

this is where they set weekly goals for

13:44

themselves and they send it to me every

13:47

single day, right? I want to see if I

13:50

can find some good examples. I don't

13:51

want to go double click into this cuz

some of this is private information, but

13:54

you can get a sense that when students

13:56

do this multiple times um for example,

they learn so much in the process. I'm

14:02

just going to like put it right here uh

14:04

and I get to learn a lot about them. So,

they set their goals for today and then

14:07

they set the goals for the next day and

14:08

I get to read every single one, right?

So,

that is the velocity tracker. There's a

14:14

lot more things I'm not going to go

14:15

into, but you can get the feel that when

14:17

students are in velocity, it really

14:18

feels like velocity. They are growing

14:21

ex- exponentially in the process.

Okay, so that's a little bit of a

14:27

detour. It's not part of the main

14:28

program, but again, any student can opt

14:29

into this, but if they're in, they have

14:31

to commit. And if they don't do one of

14:33

these things, I kick them out of

14:34

velocity, right? And then the bar to get

14:36

back in gets higher and higher. So, this

14:38

is meant to be like a very strict

14:40

container. Now, I wish I could do this

14:42

for everybody, but most kids don't want

14:44

this, right? So, this is more of an

14:46

opt-in process for if they want to be

14:48

pushed, I will push them if they join

14:50

velocity.

And I just want to give an example like

this is also external outreach. You

14:55

know, Olean, here he is messaging um the

chair of the person running the chair of

the epigenetics department at UBC. And

15:03

you can tell like this is also Edward

messaging Blake who is um the CEO of a

15:08

uh hypersonic jet company, right? So,

these are kids at the age of 13, 14, 15

just being very unapologetic and sending

15:14

cold emails and getting opportunities

15:16

along the way.

Okay, so that was kind of phase 2.5

which is we talked about velocity. Now,

15:21

we have a phase three which is the

15:22

challenge season at TKS.

15:24

Now, challenges are where we partner

15:26

with top companies and they give us an

15:28

interesting challenge statement. For

example, in Microsoft, it was, "Hey, we

15:32

are using a lot of energy with our data

15:35

centers. What can we do to make sure

15:37

that we are more energy efficient moving

15:38

forward, right?" Very difficult problem.

You have to think about cooling, the

15:41

performance of the chips, where the

15:43

water's coming from, where they're

15:44

situated. So, through the challenges,

15:46

the kids learn real-world problem

15:48

solving. That doesn't have clear answers

15:50

in a textbook. They actually have to go

15:51

out there, talk to people, talk to

15:53

customers, talk to experts, and build a

15:55

worldview, and then eventually provide a

15:57

recommendation, right? So, this year we

15:59

got to work with Lovable and the United

16:00

Nations, and it's just a really cool

16:03

experience where they get real-world

16:05

exposure to how to solve problems,

16:06

right?

16:08

And then we end with something called

16:09

the moonshots. And I'll give you an

16:11

example, actually, to talk about what

16:12

the moonshots is. So, the moonshots is

16:14

four weeks. It's their end-of-year

16:15

capstone at TKS. And this is where they

16:18

are taking, they're thinking really big.

Like, what's a big problem in the world

16:21

that we can solve through emerging

16:22

technology? So, just an example, this is

16:23

Harish Ven who was in my cohort just

16:25

last year.

16:26

And, you know, he had met his two best

16:28

friends at TKS, Tristan and JP. So,

16:31

Harish was interested in quantum

16:32

computing, um Tristan was interested in

16:35

robotics, and JP was interested in

16:38

neuroscience and brain-computer

16:39

interfaces.

Now, they all came together and

16:42

developed a brain-computer interface

16:44

that helps people with paralysis move

16:46

again.

16:47

And cutscene, they started this process

16:49

at the moonshots. And now they actually

16:50

got $10,000 to continue to develop this

16:53

technology. And now they're actually

16:55

working with a professor at SFU to run

16:57

early clinical trials or early studies

16:59

to see the efficacy and how effective

this treatment or this technology can be

17:03

for people with paralysis, right? They

17:05

also go to showcase their demo live on

TV.

So, I'll actually link this later if

you're interested, but they're actually

showing this live in front of a whole

audience. This is around 7:00 a.m. in

the morning. It was quite a cool

experience.

Uh and he got lots of opportunities as a

result of this. He got the Loran

17:22

Scholarship, which is a or or in the

17:24

finals for the Loran Scholarship, which

17:25

is a 100 grand scholarship uh to go to

17:27

any university um of his choosing. So,

really at the heart of this, you can

17:30

tell that opportunities don't just come

17:33

if they're here at TKS. No, they

17:35

opportunities come cuz they use the

17:36

coaching here to build really important

17:39

projects and then leveraging those

17:40

opportuni- uh those projects to build

17:42

their networks. And then that's how they

17:44

get the internships, the top uh

17:46

admissions to top universities and

17:47

whatnot.

So, just recap, this is what it is. They

started with exploring, and they uh they

17:53

they focus on a focus process for 8

months where they're building projects.

Then we do business training through the

17:59

challenges where they're exposed to

real-world problems like the UN,

Lovable, um Meta, Google, and they learn

how do you solve real-world problems.

And then we end with the Moonshots. Um

18:09

and along the way, we have a bunch of

18:10

different workshops and whatnot. And so,

in the guide that you'll you're sent by

18:14

the admissions team, you'll get a sense

18:15

of what are all the sessions that happen

18:17

um in the time. Now, I do get this

18:19

question a lot. For now, what do

18:20

tangible outcomes look like? And also,

how many students per year get

18:25

legitimate outcomes?

Now, my response to this

is actually as follows. So,

um the outcomes look like this. Students

get into top universities, and it's not

18:34

because it happens by magic. As I

18:36

mentioned earlier, the reason they get

18:37

into top universities is because they

18:38

have the projects that most students

18:41

don't have, right? University admissions

18:43

officers are looking for spiky outcomes.

What makes this person stand out

18:47

compared to somebody else?

18:48

So, you'll see a lot of my Alaanu, my

18:50

student from 4 years ago, who's now at

18:52

Stanford.

18:53

And the reason she got there was cuz of

18:54

the projects that she built.

18:56

So, I can go on and on. Lots of students

18:58

working at all those different

18:59

companies. Uh this is also Chloe, one of

my students who got again the Loran

19:02

Scholarship while she was in session. Um

19:05

and it's because of the projects they

19:06

built along the way.

Now, for the question of how many

19:09

students actually get these

19:10

opportunities, so I would say it's about

19:13

um

roughly 25% of students.

19:15

Now, if your question is like, "Why not

Why not 100%? Why isn't everybody

19:19

getting this?"

And what I've learned over doing this

19:21

over 4 years at TKS is

it really needs to come from the

19:24

student. Not every kid cares about an

19:26

internship um or not every kid cares

19:28

enough to want to put in the work,

19:29

right? So, TKS is very much operated

19:31

like um on a merit-based system. You

19:34

don't just get the opportunities cuz

19:35

technical skills of how to build things.

reps um as much as possible so that they

become really effective public speakers.
