It's Ken Harbaugh with the Midas Touch

0:02

Network. Happy new year everyone. 2025

0:05

is finally in the books and it was a

0:07

lot. A year into Trump's first term,

0:10

we've seen a dramatic expansion of

0:12

executive powers, attacks on the media

0:14

and political opponents, the gutting of

0:16

basic government functions, the

0:18

abandonment of science, and a retreat

0:20

from global leadership. There are a

0:22

million other things to lament. I could

0:24

not possibly cover them all. But we have

0:26

also seen push back, a resistance that

0:29

is finding its voice, judges that are

0:31

holding the line in what appears to be a

0:33

building blue tsunami leading into the

0:36

2026 elections. There are signs that

0:38

Trumpism is cracking. Chief among them

0:41

is the growing paranoia of Trump and

0:43

those around him. That itself presents a

0:46

huge danger to the country as Trump

0:48

lashes out at his political foes. But

0:50

those attacks are a sign of weakness,

0:52

not strength. Today, as we embark on a

0:55

new year full of both danger and hope, I

0:58

want to share with you one example of

1:00

the absurd paranoia driving Trumpism. On

1:03

Christmas Day, I got a text from Chris

1:06

Goldmith, the founder of Vets Fighting

1:08

Fascism, a regular guest on this show,

1:10

and one of my closest friends. That

1:13

morning, Christmas morning, Mike Flynn

1:15

had put out to his 2 million followers

1:17

on Twitter that he had just asked Cash

1:20

Patel, head of the FBI, to investigate

1:23

Chris, quote, "Without mercy." That

1:25

provoked exactly the kind of response

1:27

from Flynn's followers that you would

1:29

expect. I'll let Chris tell the story,

1:32

but I want to go into it bearing this in

1:34

mind. When people like Mike Flynn and

1:36

Donald Trump make these kinds of

1:38

threats, it's a sign of weakness. It's

1:40

what bullies do. We've talked to those

1:42

on the receiving end, Mark Kelly, Miles

1:45

Taylor, Alex Vinman, Chris Goldmith.

1:47

They know what it's really about. And I

1:49

firmly believe that this will be the

1:51

year, 2026, when Americans on mass begin

1:55

to see Trump and Flynn and the entire

1:57

MAGA movement for the terrified bullies

2:00

they truly are. Here's me and Chris

2:02

Goldmith. Chris, welcome to the show. We

2:05

might actually make some news today

2:07

because for all of our hypotheticals

2:09

about the strategies and tactics of the

2:12

far right in coming after researchers

2:14

and those who expose disinformation and

2:19

how the the fascist networks work. It's

2:21

no longer hypothetical, right? They're

2:23

they're coming at Well, they have come

2:24

after you for a long time, but this one

2:27

is pretty specific. It's from General

2:29

Mike Flynn himself, and it was dropped

2:33

on Christmas Day. I mean, that to me is

2:35

is where to start. Like, that these guys

2:37

have nothing better to do. And let's not

2:40

ignore Donald Trump's Christmas Day

2:43

rant. I mean, it is it is really a sign

2:45

of how desperately alone and pathetic

2:47

the leaders of this movement are. Can

2:49

you give us the background on what's

2:52

going on and the the seriousness of it?

2:56

Yeah. So, the evening of Christmas,

2:59

December 25th, I had a friend text me to

3:03

ask me if I was okay. Um, which I didn't

3:06

know what they were talking about. And

3:09

they pointed me to a post on Elon Musk's

3:11

Twitter where General Flynn namechecked

3:15

me and was calling me a Marxist and uh

3:19

said that he had called Cash Patel, the

3:21

FBI director, and Susie Wilds, the um

3:25

chief of staff at the White House, and

3:27

asked them personally to investigate me

3:31

fully and without mercy. And the reason

3:33

for this is because uh a fascist Twitter

3:37

account tagged him in videos um that I

3:41

have done on your show uh where I'm

3:44

talking about General Flynn and his role

3:46

in the insurrection. Uh, this resulted

3:49

in countless death threats. Uh, lots and

3:54

lots of Flynn's followers uh, calling me

3:56

a Jew, calling me a Marxist, saying that

3:59

they should bring back firing squads,

4:01

asking for my address and the address of

4:03

of my family members, uh, and and

4:07

basically saying uh, pretty explicitly

4:10

that if they were to find me, they would

4:12

kill me. That that is what my Christmas

4:15

was like because General Flynn uh this

4:18

disgraced former general and convicted

4:20

felon um who has been painting himself

4:24

as a Christian like that is core to his

4:26

identity. That that's how he spent

4:28

Christmas stirring up an insane mob.

4:32

>> There's two elements of this strategy

4:36

when they come after folks like you.

4:38

We've talked to Miles Taylor about this

4:40

who's experienced it personally. We've

4:42

talked to Alex Vinman, countless others

4:44

who have crossed the regime and people

4:46

close to the regime. Step one is the

4:49

levers of the state and this threat, the

4:51

call from Mike Flynn to Susie Wilds and

4:54

Cash Patel to investigate you quote

4:56

without mercy. But step two, and they

4:59

know it's part of it, is the mob. And

5:02

it's unleashing those uh those death

5:04

threats and the doxing and that that

5:08

ultimate pressure point which is

5:09

physical violence against enemies of the

5:12

regime.

5:13

>> Yeah. And and this is something that I

5:15

am I I've been prepared for though it is

5:18

it is always disturbing when it happens.

5:20

It's never a surprise because I have

5:23

been actively

5:25

fighting fascists in a very literal way

5:28

uh for for half a decade [clears throat]

5:31

now. Uh it started in 2020 when I

5:34

infiltrated my first extremist

5:36

organization uh Patriot Front which is a

5:38

neo-Nazi organization who wants to make

5:41

the United States a white ethnostate

5:43

through mass deportations and murder if

5:46

that doesn't work. Um which which is

5:49

genocide. That is the definition of

5:51

genocide.

5:52

I since I first saw this problem up

5:56

close and and personal when I

5:58

infiltrated this organization, I have

6:00

not been able to look away and it it is

6:05

it saddens me. I think General Flynn,

6:08

this disgraced former general, has been

6:11

off his rocker for quite some time, but

6:14

he is explicitly aligning himself with

6:18

with Nazis, with swastika flying

6:20

neo-Nazis because they find common cause

6:24

in coming after me because I am not a

6:26

fascist like they are. Uh the man has

6:30

has fallen and continues to fall

6:34

and I I welcome any sort of government

6:38

investigation. This has happened to a

6:41

lot of friends of mine. Uh Nina

6:43

Jenkowitz has been harassed by Jim

6:45

Jordan and uh his weaponization

6:48

committee which is so aptly named. uh

6:50

Imran Ahmed uh who runs the Center for

6:53

Countering Digital Hate uh who is in the

6:56

United States, lives here, uh has a

6:59

family, has a green card. They are

7:01

trying to

7:03

>> deport him uh because he was

7:06

highlighting how swastika flying

7:08

neo-Nazis were proliferating all over

7:11

Elon Musk's Twitter. So I'm my friends,

7:15

my colleagues uh from this industry have

7:19

been experiencing this for years and

7:22

you know what I I am fine with being

7:25

investigated. I I will talk to my

7:29

contacts at the FBI gladly and hand them

7:32

all of the data that I have on Flynn and

7:35

Cash Patel and anyone else because I

7:38

don't think that the extremist

7:40

connections that the current FBI

7:42

director Cash Patel uh that he has have

7:45

been well reported.

7:48

Hey everyone, it's Ken. Quick break for

7:50

a shameless pitch for my Substack and

7:52

Patreon pages. To all of you who have

7:54

subscribed, thank you. Your support is

7:57

what makes this show possible. Anytime

7:59

you see in-person reporting, whether

8:01

it's trips to Ukraine to show you what

8:03

is really happening on the ground or my

8:06

recent conversations with Congressman

8:08

Jason Crowe and Senator Tammy Duckworth,

8:10

where we got on there commitments to

8:12

back hearings into ISIS abuses of power.

8:15

People need to know that we're taking

8:18

names.

8:19

>> All of this only happens with your

8:21

support. Every dollar that comes in

8:23

through Substack and Patreon goes back

8:25

into this show. And with the holidays

8:27

coming up, you can give gift

8:29

subscriptions as well. The links are

8:31

below. Thanks for everything. Your

8:33

support means the world to me. Back to

8:35

the show. The paranoia oozes out of Mike

8:39

Flynn. And you see Mike Flynn suggesting

8:43

that you may have met whoever this

8:45

butler character is at the CIA, [snorts]

8:48

which I guess is illustrative on a

8:50

couple levels. One, deeply paranoid.

8:53

Two, deeply ignorant that a threear

8:56

general wouldn't know who Smemedley

8:58

Butler is.

8:59

>> Should be pretty embarrassing.

9:01

>> Yeah. Mike Mike Flynn before he was the

9:04

national security adviser was was the

9:06

director of national intelligence, the

9:07

DNI um under Obama. The the man is is

9:11

not a nobody. He he is someone who is

9:16

well read. Um and it is difficult for me

9:20

as someone who has followed him pretty

9:22

closely and again I'm not spying on him.

9:24

He posts all of this stuff online. I'm

9:26

just reading what he posts. It's

9:28

difficult for me to tell if this is all

9:31

a grift

9:33

um or if he has had something go wrong

9:38

in the last decade and a half or so with

9:41

his brain and uh with his psychology

9:44

that has sent him in this direction

9:47

because it all seems so absurd. a man

9:49

who is so well educated, who is so um

9:53

who has been so exposed to the way that

9:55

the military and the way that the um

9:59

intelligence industry works, which I am

10:01

not an official part of. I'm I'm a

10:04

self-taught investigator. Uh that

10:08

for him to look at me as some sort of

10:10

threat to him, it just seems it seems

10:14

really silly that he would believe that

10:17

I'm a threat to him.

10:19

Um, but again, Mike Flynn painting

10:23

himself as a victim is part of

10:27

encouraging this cult to come after me,

10:31

to physically threaten me, and and to

10:33

potentially murder me. This has

10:35

historical parallels. the Nazis, uh the

10:39

the fascists of of Mussolini's

10:42

um Italy. All of these fascist regimes

10:46

rely on conspiracy theories, be it about

10:48

the Jews or uh the Roma or uh or anyone

10:54

else. They have these conspiracy

10:56

theories that are central to their

10:58

belief system. And it it requires the

11:01

dehumanization, the otherization of

11:04

other people which justifies violence in

11:07

their minds. General Flynn knows this

11:11

because he has studied history. He's a

11:13

well-educated man. He has multiple

11:15

degrees. He is someone who was in the

11:17

defense uh intelligence industry for his

11:20

entire career. The man knows what

11:23

insurgencies

11:25

are fueled by and and religious fervor

11:29

which he has created over the years by

11:32

blending his Christianity with his

11:35

leadership in this QAnon movement is

11:38

exactly that.

11:39

>> I am sure that when threats like General

11:43

Flynn are leveled at people like you,

11:46

their thinking is that the intimidation

11:48

will work. Because all too often,

11:50

especially when it's leveled at American

11:51

institutions, and this is deeply

11:55

>> frustrating and disappointing, it does

11:57

work. When it's leveled against law

11:59

firms or universities, they cave. They

12:01

don't want the hassle. They don't want

12:02

the pressure. But I think one of the

12:04

things we're learning is that the

12:06

strength of American democracy only

12:08

partly resides in the institutions. It

12:11

really rests in, to quote our framers,

12:14

and the souls of men, right? men and

12:15

women and in in the ability of people

12:18

like you to push back. When they came

12:21

after Miles Taylor, his council told

12:25

him, "Lay low, don't make a fuss." And

12:27

he did just the opposite. Uh he fought

12:30

back and and it's working. When they

12:32

came after Alex Vinman, he wrote a book.

12:36

When they came after the people you're

12:38

talking about, they didn't take it. And

12:40

I think that is the only response in a

12:42

situation like this. I'm sure General

12:44

Flynn will be just as surprised uh that

12:47

that you're pushing back as he is that

12:50

Smmedley Butler is an American hero

12:52

[snorts] and not some undercover CIA

12:54

agent.

12:56

>> Yeah. And and I hope that General Flynn

12:59

uh spends some time looking into my work

13:01

because I think he'll he'll if if he may

13:04

hate it, but I think he'll appreciate

13:06

it. And the next episode of the

13:08

onoffense podcast, which you can listen

13:10

to anywhere uh that you get your

13:13

podcasts or on YouTube at the Valor

13:15

Media Network, the next episode that I'm

13:18

going to release is about Smmedley

13:20

Butler and the fascist plot that that he

13:23

helped to foil. Uh, and it is an

13:26

interview with with journalist and

13:28

historian Jonathan MCatz who worked for

13:32

the AP was uh was stationed in Haiti and

13:35

and wrote a book about Smemedley Butler

13:38

that anyone who's seen me is familiar

13:40

with because I keep it in my background.

13:42

Um,

13:43

Smemedley Butler traveled around the

13:46

world uh at a time when the United

13:49

States was building kind of a corporate

13:51

empire and knocking down democratically

13:54

elected leaders. When he came home and

13:57

took off the uniform, he came to regret

13:59

that action. And he is he's most well

14:02

known for writing the book, a very brief

14:04

book, which is a speech called War is a

14:07

Racket. That's what most Americans

14:09

probably know him for. But at the time

14:11

he was the most decorated Marine Corps

14:14

um Marine in history. He was twice

14:16

awarded the Medal of Honor. He lied to

14:20

join the Marine Corps at 16 years old uh

14:24

to fight in the SpanishAmerican War. uh

14:27

he and Jonathan Katz followed in

14:30

Butler's footsteps basically a hundred

14:32

years later uh and and wrote about the

14:36

lasting impacts that this kind of war of

14:38

empire has on these regions and the

14:41

imperial boomerang that results from

14:43

these kinds of of wars of of uh of

14:47

empire of uh of expansion. And this is

14:50

not just a a phenomenon that occurs with

14:53

veterans with participants in the war.

14:55

It's something that happens with our

14:57

society. Kathleen Belaloo, who you

15:00

interviewed extensively for the Against

15:03

All Enemies documentary. Um, this is the

15:06

thesis of her her book, uh, Bring the

15:09

War Home, where when we go on on these

15:13

wars of adventure, our culture here at

15:16

home starts to turn in on itself, turn

15:20

against its own democracy

15:22

>> physically. It becomes more violent,

15:24

>> right? That's when you see a rise in

15:26

militias, militia activity. Uh you see a

15:29

rise in the cooperation between militias

15:33

and elected officials. You see the

15:35

radicalization of policies uh from the

15:38

farright. We are experiencing that right

15:40

now after longest period of war that

15:44

America has ever been in the global war

15:46

on terror that lasted 20 years between

15:48

Iraq and Afghanistan. Well, Chris, I'm

15:51

glad we're ending with the the onoffense

15:54

teaser because this one's going to be

15:56

great. We'll put the link to the show in

15:58

the notes below. Uh the the show is

16:01

doing incredibly well, but everyone

16:02

should go check it out. As Chris said,

16:05

anywhere you get your podcast or even

16:07

better on YouTube on the uh the Valor

16:09

channel. Thanks, Chris.

16:10

>> Yeah. And and let me make a very

16:12

specific ask. Please make sure you're

16:14

downloading every single episode. Listen

16:17

to it, watch it on YouTube. This is so

16:20

important. And rate it everywhere that

16:22

you see it. If you see it on YouTube,

16:24

you know, give it a like. If you see it

16:26

on uh on Spotify, where we're also

16:29

posting videos, if you listen to it on

16:31

Spotify or Apple Podcasts, rate us five

16:33

stars. Share the show with your friends

16:36

because that is the only way that we can

16:39

maintain this pace to to continue doing

16:42

this. My goal is to make Chris Goldsmith

16:45

not essential for democracy. I I I want

16:47

to make myself obsolete because I want

16:49

to train Americans how to fight fascism

16:52

and not need me anymore. But we need to

16:55

work to get there.

16:56

>> Same. Thanks, Chris. See you soon.

16:58

>> Thanks, brother.

Interactive Summary

The video discusses the political landscape in early 2025, a year into Trump's first term, highlighting concerns about the expansion of executive power and attacks on democratic institutions, alongside a growing "resistance." Ken Harbaugh introduces Chris Goldsmith, who recounts an incident on Christmas Day where Mike Flynn publicly called for an FBI investigation into Goldsmith "without mercy," leading to death threats from Flynn's followers. Goldsmith, a co-founder of "Vets Fighting Fascism," explains this is part of a two-pronged strategy involving state intimidation and mob violence. He discusses his work fighting fascism, including infiltrating extremist groups, and welcomes any investigation as he has data on Flynn's extremist connections. The conversation draws parallels between current events and historical fascist tactics, emphasizing the importance of resisting intimidation and connecting foreign imperial wars to domestic radicalization, as explored in Goldsmith's upcoming podcast about Smedley Butler. The video concludes with a call for support to continue their work.
