I took public transit to my first solo backpacking trip
495 segments
I texted my sisters this morning and
told them I'm going backpacking and my
sister was like, "You go, girl." But I
just don't know why you would do that to
yourself.
[music]
I am going on my first ever solo
backpacking trip. Am I nervous? Just a
little bit. Hopefully, it'll be somewhat
easy. It is a 3mile trail, 6 mile total.
I have a very early journey tomorrow. I
will sleep early tonight, hopefully. But
that's what I always say before a trip,
and I never actually sleep early. Well,
it has been a day. It is currently 8:48
p.m. My plan is to be in bed by 10:00.
After I put the water inside, I have a
total of 4 L packed inside.
Babe, guess how many lbs.
>> 35.
>> Oh, no. Not that heavy. 26.3. I thought
it was going to be 28, which I think
it's going to be 28 once I put the
battery bank. Let's put this on my back
and see. Can she do it? Last time we
went backpacking, I thought I was the
ultra light queen. And you know why the
secret is to have your man carry
everything for you. Not this time.
Okay. I think you are first. I need to
look up a video. I'm not even going to
talk anymore because I don't think I'm
doing this correctly. But in my memory,
I believe you're supposed to work from
the bottom up. I could be wrong. If you
ever want to be over stimulated, go
backpacking because there are so many
straps on your backpack.
You know what? It does not feel that
bad. Ooh. Okay. I'm using this new
camera. So, it has this feature where it
tracks you. So, if I move here,
[laughter]
>> I think I'm going to be fine. Anyho,
this is everything that I have packed.
Actually, I have one more thing. Hang
on. [snorts]
I am also Oh my god, that is so cool.
Look at the camera following me. Hey.
Hey. No one's recording me right now.
It's the camera. I also am going to wear
this fanny pack because I want to have
somewhere that is quickly accessible. I
do have these little ones here on the
side, but they're already filled and
it's a little too small to fit my phone.
I'm going to shower, do my face mask,
and then go to sleep by 10.
Oh, wait. Oh, no. I just realized I
didn't put my sleeping pad in the
backpack yet. Darn it. I thought it was
26 lb. This thing is like 2 lb. So,
we're we're looking more at like 28,
maybe even 30. Where am I going to put
that? There's no space. This in.
Got my battery bank, my light now. Oh,
exactly 29. All right. Now, I'm finally
going to go shower, do my face mask, and
go to bed. I'm so excited to do this
mask. I have wanted one of these for so
long. This is the FAQ 202 by FO. So, I'm
first starting off with this peptide
serum. This is the FAQ red light peptide
serum. I've heard so many great things
about this mask. And the cool thing is
that this actually has gone through
clinical trials and have proven results.
You just tighten it here in the back.
It's ultra lightweight and it's made
with this unique flexif silicone that
molds to your face. So, every part of
your face is covered and your eyes are
protected. I can just walk around the
house and do whatever I have to do
because it's also wireless. So, I'm
going to turn it on and start with the
red light. It has a powerful anti-aging
and longevity combo featuring eight
wavelengths. So, there are seven LED
lights plus NIR, which stands for near
infrared that targets every skin
concern. It boosts collagen production,
reduces dark spots, acne, redness, and
dullness, and enhances overall radiance.
It reduces wrinkles and fine lines, so
your skin tone is more even with less
sunspots, which is so important for me
because I am starting to see them. It
also helps with minimizing pores and
reduces redness. [music] After the red
light, I like to do the green light
because this visibly reduces sunspots
and uneven skin tone by targeting the
melanin producing cells UV radiation
overstimulates.
The skin is looking so juicy. Hold on,
let me move the camera. I feel like my
skin looks so plump right now. It is for
Rayo's birthday sale. This is their best
sale of the year. So, you can get up to
50% off on their sale by applying an
extra 35% off with my code, which is
hong 35. I'll put a QR code here on the
screen and I'll also link it below if
you're interested. I'm going to have to
use this when I come back from
backpacking because I'm going to be
exposed to a lot of sun and I think my
skin will really benefit from it when I
get back.
The journey began at Union Station in
Los Angeles because instead of driving
to the trail head, I decided to take the
train.
I've always wanted to check out the
Metro Link. And after 10 years of living
here, I finally did. And you know what?
I was pleasantly surprised to find the
train very clean and on time. It was
nice seeing downtown LA from the train
and for once [music] not having to sit
in the traffic. I wanted this trip to
feel like an adventure and it definitely
started off pretty exciting.
And I don't know if it's just because it
was early in the morning, but the train
ride was very calm and I really enjoyed
it.
The train ride was about an hour. After
that, I took a 20-minute Uber ride to
the [music] trail head.
At this point, I had so much on my mind.
My mind was racing, just thinking about
the hike, wondering if I'm ready. And
classic mem, I forgot to zip up my
backpack.
Thankfully, once I made it to the ranger
station, a [music] kind man let me know
and he helped me zip it up. But as I
started the hike, I began to feel
paranoid and so I just had to double
check.
>> We are good. Everything is in here.
>> And we are in fact not good because I
didn't realize something crucial was
missing from my pack.
I have a problem. Yesterday when I was
packing, do you see if I left my
>> Yeah, you can last, too.
>> Oh my god. But more on that later.
For now, let's focus on the positives.
It was around 11:00 a.m. by the time I
started the hike, and everything was
going pretty smoothly until I realized I
was on the wrong trail.
Well, because I am the absolute worst
when it comes to reading maps, I just
got to another point where they have a
sign and I realized that I took the
wrong trail. But it's okay because it's
super scenic and it feels great outside.
What's adding another mile to the hike?
That is totally fine and at least I am
going downhill.
I'm back at the trail head.
It's still so lush and green right now.
I'm sweating hard right now. It feels
good. Not too bad. Not too bad. I'm so
glad I brought this umbrella. Oh yeah.
This is saving me from the sun right
now. The sun is beaming. Anyway, I'm
about 2 miles in. Feeling good. Feeling
sweaty. [music]
>> [music]
>> Wow, what a difference.
I texted my sisters this morning and
told them I'm going backpacking and my
sister was like, "You go, girl." But I
just don't know why you would do that to
yourself. [laughter] I think maybe it's
just the challenge, the adventure. It's
tiring. It'll be easier if I just drove
somewhere to camp. I don't know. I guess
this is different. I can always drive
and camp, so why not try hiking camp?
Well, I believe in you. Covered maybe
about two miles now. I came from down
there. It's getting a little hot. Don't
know what I would do without this
umbrella.
The sun
is relentless. It's like my own built-in
shade. Wow, there's a car. I didn't know
cars were allowed up here. I think I'm
almost at the halfway point. Well, every
time I think I'm almost there. I am not.
[music] Okay, let's keep moving.
[singing]
I was walking and walking and I'm like,
"Okay, the campsite should be here
soon." And so I was like, "You know
what? I'm going to check the map." And
sure enough, I went the wrong way once
again. I should have been at the
campsite by now, but I took a wrong
turn. One of these days I'm going to get
better at reading maps. I just spent all
this extra energy going the complete
opposite way.
I should have been there already.
It's okay. The universe wanted to give
me a little more exercise. Yes.
It's a great day. We're almost there.
We're almost there. We're just going to
backtrack about one mile, but that's
fine. That's totally fine.
This is the last stretch. I've come
pretty far. I know I'm almost there
because I see the outhouse that's up
there.
Not much of a view. The view is over
there, but it's nice and private. There
was another spot with more of a view,
but there was less privacy, so I think I
like this one.
I don't think there's any more. Oh,
there is still a trail.
Oh my god, this bench is completely
loose.
Okay, I made it. I doubled what the
trail was supposed to be because I took
two wrong turns. It was supposed to be a
2 and 1/2 mile trek and I did 5 miles.
Wow, I doubled the time. So, lesson
learned, guys. Watch the map. Look at
your phone. I was not doing that.
Oh. Oh.
Oh dear.
Oh yes.
Hallelujah.
Okay.
Drink some water.
I ended up walking around a little bit.
I think this site is a little better
because I can actually see the ocean and
the site is pretty spacious. It's flat.
The ground is soft. So, I can pitch my
tent right there. How pretty.
[sighs and gasps]
Almost
[music]
forgot my footprint.
[music]
[music]
>> [music]
[music]
[music]
>> Once again, this umbrella is saving me.
This umbrella
amazing. The reason I started bringing
umbrellas on hikes, I think the book is
called Things You Learn from Falling.
And it was about a girl who had a hiking
accident and she was out in the back
country for I think almost 2 weeks or
like 7 days, something crazy. The one
thing she wished she had was an
umbrella. The sun can be ruthless. You
never know when you just might be
completely exposed to the sun for hours
with no escape. So thankfully because I
have this umbrella, I'm chilling.
There's going to be at least 5 more
hours of sunlight. The sun is coming
down strong and I'm so glad I have it.
Pump. I usually bring a bed pump, but I
was trying to be as light as possible.
Okay, at this point it was getting
pretty warm with no shade and nowhere to
really go. So, I was alternating between
trying to set up my tent and just
sitting here on the table. The table
gave me a higher point where a breeze
was coming through. So, this was kind of
the only comfortable spot to be for the
next few hours.
I am not enjoying this as much as I
thought I would. I said on the weather
forecast it was going to be high 60s,
but instead it is mid70s.
Not the most comfortable, but not the
[music] most hot either. I'm just out
here in the open with no shade. And the
only shade I have is from this umbrella.
Luckily, there is a little bit of a
breeze, so that's making it a bit more
bearable. But because it's so warm, I
have no appetite. I'm feeling pretty
beat. I kind of want to just chill and
relax, but I can't be inside of the tent
because it is way too hot in there. I'm
still glad that I did it. Wait a hold.
This is entertaining. Hang on. Look at
this ant. Let's see if the camera Let me
see. Um. Aw. I don't see it anymore. Oh.
Oh. Oh. It's right here. Aha. Look at
this ant carrying that rock. Where are
you going with that?
Oh. Oh, it just got blown.
A single mom who works two jobs.
I am drying out my backpack right now
because I just realized that my water
bladder was leaking. I didn't lose too
much. Letting that dry. I still have 3
and 1/2 L of water. While that dries,
I'm going to set up this table.
My face is salty. [snorts]
Got my pillow. I need to have a proper
meal. So, I'm trying to decide for what
I want. I love Mountain House. One of
the [music] best. And Peak Refuel. Oh,
they are both so good. What should I do?
Maybe Maybe I will try this just because
I have not tried this one yet.
[crying]
>> You want your other book?
I can hear a mom consoling her baby girl
right now. For all the moms out there
and dads, but especially the moms. If
you are backpacking with your child, you
are amazing. You are killing it. Like,
if I even did this with my dogs, like
that in itself would be a lot. I mean,
Na'vi and Olly are honestly amazing dogs
and they're really easygoing, but still,
you know, it's like you still have to
pack extra stuff for the dogs and you
have to keep an eye on them. You can't
really like fully be present for
yourself. Shout out to the parents. I
always put way less water than what it
recommends. 12 oz. We're going to do 8
oz of water.
[snorts]
I was getting pretty excited about
eating until I realized something
crucial is missing. But thankfully
there's reception here. So I called W.
>> I have a problem. [snorts] yesterday
when I was packing in the dining table.
Um, do you see if I left my fork?
>> Yeah, you lost it.
>> Oh, okay. All right. Well, just
wondering cuz earlier when I started the
hike, I didn't realize my backpack was
opened, so I thought like it fell out.
Um, but yeah. Okay. All right. I'll get
creative. I'm going to have to get
really creative here. I could
potentially use the lid. This could be a
spoon, right? I can [music] just I'm
just going to roll with it. It's totally
fine. This is my Insta 360 case.
Okay,
let's try it. [laughter] The seasoning
is not even mixed.
Oh, I really like this one.
is a little salty because my seasoning
is not mixed. I'll never forget this.
You live and you learn. At the end of
the day, we are resourceful. Look at
that.
We made work. M I probably could have
used a little more water. Can't even
tell, right? Looks like I'm eating a
taco.
It happens.
Ooh, this actually has some spice to it.
You know how earlier I was saying I kind
of feel like this wasn't as fun as I
expected it to be? I was just in my head
thinking I shouldn't have planned this
[music] trip. I should have done
something else, but I'm in a much better
place now. Maybe I was just hungry.
This is my favorite [music] time of day.
I love how every 10 minutes the
landscape changes a little bit. Just
watching the sun set on the mountain
ridge, seeing [music] the pastels come
out in the sky. Ah, I love it so much.
This makes all the heat earlier worth
it. [laughter]
I was really delusional earlier. What am
I talking about? This is not fun. This
is so awesome. I'm whispering because
there are other campers here. This was
so worth that hike. The heat in the
afternoon. I think I just wasn't used to
it because usually when I'm camping I'll
have so much stuff that I would bring
that I can do. But with backpacking it's
so minimal. So I was just sitting there
and I kind of felt bored. But this is
the whole point. I hope that the camera
is capturing just how beautiful it looks
right now. Wow. It is stunning. So happy
right now. I brought my book with me. I
thought I would just sit here and read,
but I cannot even take my eyes off the
view right now. It's so nice to just
look out at the view. What a perfect
trip.
I couldn't stop smiling. It's just so
beautiful.
Please go the other way.
[laughter]
Please,
please go the other way.
Um,
I'm having this for breakfast.
Or actually, I'll do a little more so I
can make my coffee.
It's so hot. Oh my god, it's so hard.
It needs to sit for a little bit more.
That looks amazing.
Mhm.
I'm obviously no expert. Few things that
I'm really glad I had on this trip. My
[laughter]
seating pad. I keep calling a sit pad.
Is it a seating pad or sit pad? I know
this thing looks super thin, but it
helps so much. The second thing would be
my umbrella. Thank goodness for the
umbrella yesterday because it was so
sunny and it just really helped shield
me during the hike. I think I would have
brought more wipes. Yesterday I was just
so sweaty and sticky. I really wish that
I had one of those bath wipes. First
thing I should do is change because it's
starting to get warm.
Wow, I feel amazing. I needed to change
out of that. Okay, let's see how quickly
I can pack up.
[snorts]
Thank you, Sophie, for this cute fanny
pack. She got it for me when she went to
Japan and I use it all the time. I use
it when I walk the dogs. All right.
Also, thank you to Solomon for sending
me these. These are the XT Whispers, and
they've held up really well so far. I've
gone on a few trips with them and I
really like it. They're so comfy and
light.
I would rate this first solo backpacking
trip a solid 8 out of 10. Yesterday, at
my lowest point, I thought I would never
do this again, [music]
but I'm pretty sure that was my hunger
speaking because I would absolutely
[music] do it again.
I felt a little nervous and intimidated
going into this, but ultimately I felt I
chose the right trail to experience this
for the first time. I felt safe. The
trail itself was beginner friendly, and
I feel more confident now to try this
again in the future. W texted me that he
will be picking me up at the trail head.
So, I started to make my way [music]
down the mountain. And since I
remembered my way down, I did not make
two wrong turns.
I see them.
Hi
I'm so sweaty and gross.
>> So sweater, too.
>> Let me see. Just leave it like this
maybe.
>> I had coffee. I had coffee this morning.
>> Feels really really really
sticky.
