Go.
>> Oh, dude. No. I'm actually very
impressed. Holy crap. What the heck? Hi,
my name's Kim.
>> I'm Naelli.
>> And we're Cher Brew Coffee. We're a
coffee pop-up based out of LA. We focus
specifically on specialty lattes.
>> Today, we're blind tasting six different
grocery store coffee beans.
>> They're all inexpensive except for one.
So, we're going to use our expertise to
try and find which one it is. Okay. This
is going to be coffee number one.
>> Ooh, let's smell it.
>> Okay. Just smells There's nothing that
stands out. You can smell it's just dark
and
>> Yeah, it's defin definitely a darker
rose. Smells good though. Smells good.
>> It smells like what my dad would drink
growing up. Feels like when we would
clock off work and all of our clothes
would just smell like coffee and you get
in your car
>> and you be like, "Wow,
awful."
>> I'm going to smell like sweat.
>> Sweat and coffee.
>> Sweat and coffee and sadness.
>> All right.
I wonder if you can smell
>> What do you think?
>> Just like coffee scent. You don't really
get anything out of it. Chocolatey.
>> Get a little bit of lime. Like a weird
zesty. I think it smells nice.
>> Like she loves everything but also hates
everything at the same time. So you
don't really know what you're going to
get.
>> Very true. That that brewed really nice.
Did you see that? It's really nice.
>> I was being a little a little mean and a
little harsh. It's actually pretty good.
Poor.
>> Let's try. Cheers.
>> Well, it's not that's not what I thought
it was going to taste. It coats your
mouth immediately, but not the way that
like regular ground coffee does. Just
goes immediately
>> to the back of your back. Not even like
acidic. It's like a weird shock like
chemical.
>> So, it's like bitter. It's not a good
bitter.
>> It's like a very hurtful bitter
>> sad thing. There's no acidity to this.
I'm like 99% sure this is very cheap. It
also doesn't have any flavor that stands
out to me. It's just black coffee. I
would add a bunch of sugar and a bunch
of milk to this. My mom would love this.
As it cools down, it just gets blander.
>> Yeah,
>> I feel like it was already bland from
the beginning.
>> I would give this like a six out of 10.
>> Give it a three out of 10.
>> Okay.
>> Oh,
>> yep. Pizza. This is like very basic.
This is something that like a grandpa
would get,
>> which is interesting cuz I heard pizza
was actually like pretty okay when
Starbucks came up.
>> I've never had pizza. It's like a white
elephant gift where it's like everyone's
like fighting to give it away.
>> Oh, thanks.
>> This is coffee number two. Oo, it's
nice.
>> You have depth in this one.
>> Mhm. It's kind of bright.
>> Mhm. Very nice.
>> I feel like you can smell some fruits in
that.
>> See?
>> Go try it.
>> Still very light.
>> The grind size on this looks so much
different than the dark roast, which
seems pretty promising. You ready to try
it?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> That's really light.
>> It is very light.
>> Yeah. Both the flavor and the body.
>> And it's not very bitter, which is like
pretty good. I would probably take my
time and really sip on this cuz it's
very teaike. I don't really get notes
out of this. I feel like you got more
out of the scent.
>> There's nothing again that stands out
about this slight like dryness towards
the end like the aftertaste. Like when
you eat some almonds.
>> Yeah.
>> That's the only flavor that I could tell
you for this coffee. some nutty like
almond. It's just bland. There's nothing
special to it. And it's not bad.
>> Yeah. No, it's not bad.
>> As it cools down, you do get some slight
maybe like raisiny subtle sweetness.
>> It It almost like becomes a little bit
more bodied as it's cooling down.
>> Starting to taste like hay.
>> Oh, I
>> dry.
>> Very woody. You're definitely never
going to find any kind of hay flavor on
like a quality cup of coffee. I don't
think hay is something people want. This
is like a three out of 10. Very
inexpensive.
>> Four out of 10 for me because I don't
know. I guess I like hay. I don't know.
>> Stop.
So, this is what my dad drank growing
up. I can see why this was like a pretty
decent cup of coffee.
>> If you're going to drink it with your
sugar, your milk, it's fine, but it just
gets really bad at the end. It makes
sense that this has chory because
chugory is also very like heyy nutty but
there's not much flavor to it. It's just
hey coffee number three. You do get some
dark chocolate slightly sweet. Yeah,
it's just basic.
>> Yeah, almost like smokeoky.
>> It smells a little fruity, a little
sweet. It's blooming which is a good
sign. Blooming is when you wet the
coffee and it kind of rises. That means
there's gas in it still. When it's an
old coffee it's not going to do that.
So, it could be a good sign.
>> You were able to smell it a little sweet
here. And you can definitely smell how
it's a little bit sweeter here. Seems
pretty good.
>> Like maybe like a tangerine. Slightly
citrusy, but I can't I'm not going to
say like lemon or anything. Just it's
like the orange peel.
>> It does have like that heart of an
orange.
>> It's not too bold.
>> This the aroma doesn't transfer to the
taste.
>> No. Cuz we were smelling a lot of
tangerine, but then you taste it and
it's just like a dark roast and it
leaves like a metallic taste.
>> Metallic is not desirable.
>> No,
>> there's there's no acidity in this. Body
is quite heavy and the aftertaste is
dry. So,
>> it's very very dry after.
>> This is also probably pretty
inexpensive. This is so far the only one
I would drink. As it cools down, you get
more sweetness and less metal. I'm also
getting like a slight like plum.
>> I can taste the stone fruit. I like this
one. This is like seven out of 10 for
me.
>> Really? This is like a two out of 10 for
me.
>> Two?
>> Yeah. Just because there's nothing I
want versatility.
>> Oh, come on. That makes sense why it was
so dark.
>> You think this is double roasted?
>> I don't think maybe this one is not good
quality. It just isn't.
>> But it's also not the worst. I don't
mind it. I thought that was pretty good.
>> Have you ever had
>> No.
>> I've never gone to Starbucks to get a
brewed coffee. I don't.
>> Yeah. There's nothing wrong if you do.
>> Yeah, I'm not judging you if you do.
>> Get your cup of coffee.
>> Exactly.
>> Coffee number four.
>> Wo.
>> Yeah,
>> that's nice. That's really nice.
>> Say it was like very pro. Okay,
>> this is very promising. You could just
tell the coffee grinds. They're very
light. They have a good texture and the
aroma
is amazing. That's sweet. I get
cherries.
>> Oh yeah,
>> that's crazy.
>> Yeah, this is full full body.
>> Amazing fruits. Not like citrus, not
heavy citrus, but
>> that smells so good. It smells like a
cherry Laffy taffy, like a candy. This
looks really nice. It also bloomed,
which means there's still gas in there.
It's still fresh. It's smelling like a
lemon tea. Some slight like jasmine. I'm
90% sure this is the expensive one. I'm
positive this is a good color, too. Oh,
yeah.
That's nice. You see how it's like a
light amber, light brown, reddish
almost? Yeah,
>> that's what you want.
>> Oh, yeah. This is like biting into an
apple. This is really sweet, flavorful.
It's fruity. The acidity is a medium,
but it's balanced because the flavor is
not too strong.
>> And there's no bitterness that coats
your tongue and it almost gets like
acidic. It gets acidic as it's cooling
down.
>> You wouldn't want to add milk and sugar
to this. That would just ruin this cup.
I am pretty firm on this being
>> so far from the four that we've had. It
definitely is
>> not necessarily floral, but it's very
tea like.
>> It's very teaike.
>> I would throw this over eyes.
>> For me, this is like a nine out of 10.
Maybe even a 10 out of 10.
>> A nine out of 10 for me as well. You
think it's a local?
>> It might be.
>> What did we counter?
>> Oh, it might be actually.
>> Three, two, one, go.
>> Oh, dude. No. I just had a conversation.
>> You're messing with us.
McDonald's has like amazing coffee and
I've never had it this way.
>> I'm going to McDonald's after this.
>> I told you she would drink a McDonald's
coffee.
>> I will drink a McDonald's coffee and
apparently
>> Wow.
>> It's a 10 out of 10.
>> I'm actually very impressed. Holy crap.
What the heck?
>> I could have sworn this was going to be
like counterculture intelligencia stump
town.
>> Here's coffee number five. Do I know
anything anymore?
>> No, cuz we got to lock in cuz we got got
last time. So, I feel like this is a
medium roast.
>> I like this coffee grind. It looks nice
and even. Mhm. This smells really good
to me. This is sweet.
>> That's so crazy. Now, we're like
psychologically
just like
>> No, I know. We know.
>> Do we?
>> I don't know.
>> This could be the expensive one.
>> No, I don't want to say anything now.
This could be. It's definitely It's not
hay. No, it's very fruit notes.
>> Yes. It's not as strong as the other
one, but it is sweet. You do get some
fruiness. Maybe like some blueberries,
>> cherry,
>> a little bit of chocolate notes.
Nothing's really standing out to me
about this one either. Um,
>> that's also common for like quality
coffee. Sometimes it just like doesn't
shine. It's just
>> Oh, this smells really nice.
>> We're not wild.
>> Smells kind of like a sweet lemon.
>> Oh, it does. It looks great.
>> It looks good.
>> It's just like a even dip.
>> Color is also nice on this one. Do you
want to know? You saw that last time.
>> I know, but I know, but
>> trust me on this one. Looks promising.
>> Cheers.
>> Cheers.
>> I feel like you just lost all the notes
to it.
>> This is very bland. Just a regular cup
of coffee. This would be good to have
just black like this. There's no
acidity. There's no real flavor notes.
>> Barely a body to it. It's like enough to
like hold it together, but
>> almost teaike. Kind of watery. Yeah.
>> So, coffee being teaike isn't
necessarily a bad thing. It could be
something that people want and look for.
It's pretty balanced. This could be the
expensive one. Honestly, it doesn't
taste cheap, but it also doesn't taste
exciting and amazing. I'm a little torn
on this. This for me is like a seven out
of 10.
>> This like a 6 out of 10
>> for me.
>> Duncan,
>> didn't I say the worst?
>> We were talking about how the worst cup
of coffee she's ever had from
>> was Duncan. And it it tastes like
Sharpie. Um, this doesn't taste like
Sharpie though, so maybe they gave me
something else.
>> And she gave it a seven out of 10.
>> I mean, that's not bad. If I had to go
to Duncan, I would.
>> Coffee number six.
>> It smells nice. A little bit raisiny.
It's like dried fruit.
>> Yeah, actually does smell nice. It does
smell very sweet. And the color is nice,
too.
>> I don't know anymore. I don't know if I
can trust myself. This could be the
expensive one.
>> I think this could be more than the last
one. Sorry. I don't like the way that
this is brewing on here. It's just
falling down. That could mean that the
coffee is old. Usually, when the coffee
is fresh and there's still some gas in
there, it's going to take a while. All
the other coffees have taken their time
to kind of flow through the coffee. The
water. It's a good color.
>> Ooh, that is really nice.
>> That looks really light, though.
>> It looks really light, but it looks
good.
>> Cheers.
>> Cheers.
>> Are we done?
This tastes like tea to me. This doesn't
taste like coffee.
>> I was going to say I'm not mad at it.
>> This tastes like a black tea. It's nice
and juicy. It's got a medium acidity
flavor. I'm not getting anything that
stands out. Maybe like slight peach,
some sweetness. It's really nicely
balanced.
>> Yeah. I don't think this is something
that you would add milk to or like
sugar.
>> I don't get a strong coffee flavor now,
so I can't imagine what adding milk
would do to this.
>> Yeah, it covers what a quality coffee
would be. It could be the quality one.
It's just not fresh. As it cool down,
straight up just black tea.
>> I like a black tea.
>> I like a black tea.
>> They're doing the same thing.
>> This is like an eight or a nine out of
10 for me.
>> This is like an eight.
>> Eight and a half.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, Chamberlain. Chamberlain coffee.
>> Have you ever had them?
>> No. Berry, citrus, maple.
>> The maple I didn't really get that much.
>> Is this considered specialty coffee
>> of the bunch? The most expensive one.
>> Wow. I don't think I've ever tried their
coffee. I know they opened a shop
recently. Doesn't have a roast date.
>> I just wish it was a little bit more
fresh.
>> Well, this is supposed to last you till
September of 2027.
>> Oh, that's crazy.
>> It's a good cup. It's a good cup. How
much was this?
>> You can get a better for cheaper for
sure.
>> McDonald's.
>> Get the McDonald's one. Um, shout out to
McDonald's.
>> Yeah, literally. because I am actually
impressed and I'm not mad. And it's not
about me. It's not about me.
>> Stopping at McDonald's to get coffee
now.
>> Yeah. No, literally.
>> It just goes to show you that you don't
need an expensive 20 $25 bag of coffee
to have something that tastes good. Just
got to use your mocha master and brew
your coffee. It It's good.
>> Goes to show how subjective coffee can
be. And it's also really fun when we
think we know everything and then we
don't. You should always be open to like
new information and growing and it's
okay if you're wrong.
>> I still think you should support your
local roster.
>> 100% always support your local coffee
shop and coffee roaster. The McDonald's
is good also.

Kim and Naelli from Cher Brew Coffee, a pop-up based out of LA specializing in specialty lattes, conduct a blind tasting of six different grocery store coffee beans. Their goal is to identify the single expensive coffee among five inexpensive ones. The tasting yields surprising results: Coffee Number 4, which received the highest ratings for its sweet, fruity, and balanced profile, turns out to be McDonald's coffee. Conversely, Coffee Number 6, Chamberlain Coffee (the actual expensive one), was rated well but not exceptionally, with comments suggesting it wasn't as fresh as desired. The experience ultimately demonstrates the subjectivity of coffee taste, proving that quality and enjoyment don't always correlate with a high price tag, while also reinforcing the importance of supporting local roasters.
