One of my favorite ways to describe

0:04

Abilene is we're mid-sized [music] and

0:07

mighty. We're innovative. We're filled

0:10

with opportunity. [music]

0:11

We're warm. We're friendly. And we're

0:14

serious about business. I describe our

0:17

city as a city with a lot of culture and

0:19

tradition, a lot of western heritage.

0:22

We're a railroad town, and so we never

0:24

want to forget our heritage and what got

0:25

us to this point. It was just hard to

0:27

imagine that, you know, okay, that

0:30

you want to be able to build a huge data

0:31

center in Abilene, Texas. So, it was

0:34

just kind of like it

0:35

is this really true? The more questions

0:38

we asked, [music] the more skeptical we

0:40

became because a hyperscale data center

0:43

is something so unknown. And artificial

0:46

[music] intelligence, it was such an

0:48

opportunity for us to diversify our

0:51

industry [music] base. It represents new

0:54

dollars on the tax rolls, which actually

0:57

then assists [music] them to be able to

0:59

grow the community, to improve

1:01

infrastructure,

1:02

>> [music]

1:02

>> to offer opportunities to our existing

1:05

citizens and to our future citizens.

1:07

This particular land out there, that

1:10

land wasn't very usable. [music] It was

1:12

real rocky, hard clay. It wasn't

1:14

agricultural land. So, it's [music] it's

1:16

really helping our property tax base

1:18

also. So, the land itself, you know,

1:21

when [music] we talk about, "Well, that

1:23

land could have been used for this or

1:24

that." This particular project, that

1:27

land wasn't very good for hardly

1:28

anything.

1:29

>> What we're talking about then, [music]

1:30

too, is the school districts. You have

1:33

students now that have

1:35

>> [music]

1:35

>> new equipment, students that are going

1:38

to be able to be educated in new

1:41

facilities because of the [music] the

1:43

tax benefits to the school districts, as

1:45

well. I'm very proud of Abilene for

1:47

being forward-thinking [music]

1:48

and to look at these opportunities that

1:50

we have to continue to grow. You know, I

1:52

love West Texas, and I love all these

1:54

small towns in West [music] Texas. And

1:56

so, you know, when the opportunity comes

1:59

to you like [music] this, you need to

2:01

utilize it. We know that Stargate was

2:03

going to be built, and it could have

2:04

been built in any other state, it could

2:06

have been built in another city in

2:07

Texas. The technology is coming, and so

2:11

when they pick Abilene to do that, we're

2:13

excited. [music] When I say

2:14

transformational,

2:15

I think about great-grandchildren.

2:18

[music]

2:18

It will mean future prosperity for

2:21

everyone. We don't want to forget our

2:23

heritage and our culture, but I want

2:25

Abilene to grow, and and if we're going

2:26

to be the hub of this type technology

2:29

>> [music]

2:30

>> and reap the benefits from it, I'm for

2:32

it. I'm for this for Abilene.

Interactive Summary

This video describes the economic and community transformation of Abilene, Texas, following the decision to host a large-scale data center project called Stargate. The project is expected to diversify the local industry, boost the tax base, and provide long-term growth opportunities, including significant support for local school districts, all while maintaining the city's historical Western heritage.
