Quite funny really, isn't it? Danny

Welbeck and Jordan Henderson on the same

day. All we have to do is find out what

Jesse Lingard's up to and we could

reunite the entire England 2018 World

Cup squad. I think it's a very

interesting one, right? And I think a

lot of people are going to be fairly

sneery, fairly snide about this, but for

me, it makes sense. I know you're not

expecting me to say that, but it

actually makes sense. We need a culture.

We need standards. The standards at

Chelsea are just through the floor. The

standards don't exist. We have such a

recalcitrant squad. We have such a group

of unruly players and suddenly you bring

in standards. Standards should come from

the club, right? Standards should be set

in the walls. It should be there. The

way that Arsenal will always talk about

those marble halls. The way that

Manchester United will talk about the

standards that's set by the holy

trinity. The way that Liverpool fans

will talk about the standards that are

there because of the this is Anfield

sign. And those things are true. Chelsea

once had standards, but those standards

were eviscerated. Those standards were

eroded when this new ownership came in

and they did everything they could to

get rid of what existed before. They

cast it all onto the ash heap of

history. They bulldozed the culture.

They bulldozed the standards. So, the

standards need to be reset and now

crucially it looks like they have

realized that. So, how do you reset

standards? You do it over time. It isn't

easy, but the easiest way to do it

immediately is to bring in those

standard bearers. So, what did Danny

Welbeck and Jordan Henderson represent?

They represent standards. How often will

they play isn't really the point. What

they are going to do immediately is

bring a culture in. They will

immediately create something that

matters because we have had years of

inept transfer decision-making. And we

have to put it all right and we have to

put it right in one window. So, how do

you suddenly make a group of players

that have been nothing other than

disruptive

well-behaved? How do you create a

culture today? You've got to do it

today.

This is the kind of thing that should

happen over the next half decade, but we

need to do it today. Xabi Alonso needs

to do it today and the easiest way to go

about doing it is to bring in

honest, true, hard-working

standard-bearers. And the way that you

do that

is by going out and getting players that

are clinically proven to be that. You

know, Xabi Alonso, I heard him speaking

the other day. He was talking about the

the need for maturity. He was implying

that there is a lack of maturity in this

squad.

And

I think that the lack of maturity has

panicked him and he's therefore gone out

into the transfer market to try and put

it right. Like I don't think that either

footballer is going to play

massively.

They're going to play a massive role,

but I don't think they're going to play

on the pitch massively. I don't think

that there will be much game time.

Remember, there is no European football

for Chelsea. We have a 38-game Premier

League season to worry about with a

couple of domestic cups. So, we can't

rotate. We won't ever need to rotate.

You know, João Pedro will play as a

center forward.

The vast majority of games it will be

João Pedro.

But can Danny Welbeck be there for when

it's needed? Can Danny Welbeck be there

for cup games? For for

if João Pedro gets injured, if he needs

a rest, if he gets booked, if he gets

sent off.

Is there a world where Danny Welbeck can

contribute on the pitch? Absolutely. Is

he good enough? Absolutely.

But think about what he will contribute

off the pitch. Just think about what

Danny Welbeck will contribute off the

pitch. Like I'm not saying that he can't

contribute on it. He can. Like he had

his best goal-scoring campaign last

year. Like the best goal-scoring

campaign of Danny Welbeck's entire

career came last season and he played, I

think it was 35 out of 38 games or

whatever it whatever it was.

It was like an awful lot of football was

played by Danny Welbeck and he was

excellent.

But it isn't really about game time.

Look, we have so many center forwards at

the club. I know a lot are going to

leave. Like Liam Delap will be forgotten

very soon, I hope. Liam Delap will be

leading the line for Queens Park Rangers

or or for Millwall or for Lincoln City.

That is where he will be. So, he'll be

gone. Nicholas Jackson, I think we can

get an awful lot of money for. So, I

believe that we will try and make that

happen. Nicholas Jackson will be worth

somewhere between 60 and 80 million. So,

we will try and make that happen. Marc

Guehi isn't good enough to play for

Chelsea. There's a lot of players that

we need to get out of Chelsea Football

Club. So, Danny Welbeck will allow that

to happen. He will allow that seamless

passage. And if it comes down to this,

who's more likely to score a goal for

Chelsea in the last minute? Is it Danny

Welbeck or Liam Delap? The answer is

Danny Welbeck. Do you know how I know

that? Years and years and years and

years of proof. Also, do you know how I

know that? Years and years and years and

years of proof of Danny Welbeck doing

just that. I remember uh that it was

actually a game that would have been

played on the 27th or 28th of December.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Chelsea are 1-0 up. In the last minute,

they bring on Danny Welbeck. Danny

Welbeck scores. That would have been

2020, 2019, 2018, something like that.

Like, Danny Welbeck scores against

Chelsea. Danny Welbeck is a brilliant

player.

And can he contribute to our season?

Yes, 100%. So, we need him. He is a

better player today than Liam Delap.

He's actually going to be a better

player over the next 5 years than Liam

Delap. That is true. And this summer,

we need to accept that

the standards of Chelsea Football Club

are in the pits, and we need experience.

We need leadership. Like, it's not

coincidence that we were trying to sign

Granit Xhaka.

A player who is clearly a dressing room

leader. That is exactly what Xabi Alonso

need. It's exactly what Chelsea Football

Club need.

We are lacking chronically leaders. Why

have Chelsea been such a phenomenal

winning machine over the past two

decades?

Do you know why? John Terry is why. Do

you know why? Petr Čech is why. Do you

know why? Ashley Cole is why. Do you

know why? Frank Lampard is why. Do you

know why? Didier Drogba is why.

The standards, the spine, the the the

team full of international captains.

Anything other than excellence doesn't

wash. You have a dressing room that

demands excellence from the top

Excellent from every single person

involved.

That hasn't been the case. Since BlueCo

came in, nobody's demanding excellence

from anyone. We had a We had a co-owner

of BlueCo telling us that it the success

of Chelsea, the business, wasn't even

linked to the success of the football

team.

What were they going to call us?

Whatever they tried to call us, right?

That didn't need to be successful on the

pitch in order for it to succeed. The

BlueCo vision. The Silicon Valley tech

startup of football didn't need to be

successful on the pitch. Well, it looks

like they have finally realized that

they aren't the smartest people in every

room. And they've finally realized that

we need experience and we need

standards. Like Lacroix.

Good signing. Premier League proven. At

the peak of his powers. International

footballer.

He's the first signing that we have made

who is over the age of 26

since 2022.

It's ridiculous. I think I think there

was one other. Tosin Adarabioyo, maybe?

But it is absolutely ridiculous. And we

as a club, as a support, we know

how important these players are. We know

how important it is to bring in proven

experienced footballers. We are a club

that have done it over the years. Why

did Mark Hughes go down as one of

Chelsea's greatest ever center forwards?

One of the greatest center forwards to

have ever played for Chelsea

is Mark Hughes.

How old was he when he left Manchester

United? 31?

Ruud Gullit. Changed Chelsea Football

Club. Ruud Gullit guided us as manager

to our first trophy in 25 years.

That is what the signing of Ruud Gullit

did. Ruud Gullit elevated us from a team

that went 25 years without a trophy to

suddenly having a Ballon d'Or player

playing for us, managing us, guiding us

to silverware. How old was Ruud Gullit

when we signed him?

How old was Thiago Silva when he came to

Chelsea and won us a Champions League?

How old was Gianfranco Zola when he

scored that goal against Blackburn

Rovers, the free kick on his debut. How

old was

I mean, the list goes on. The list goes

on and on and on. How old was Michael

Ballack when he landed on a free?

The list goes on and on and on.

So, I think that this is exactly what we

should be doing. I don't think Henderson

can really contribute. But, we saw what

he did at the World Cup. We saw what

Morgan Rogers said about him at the

World Cup. Now, I don't think he should

have gone to the World Cup. I don't

think he should have been there. But,

Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham were

talking about him. They said he's a

great guy. Everything is better with

Jordan Henderson there. The world is a

better place when Jordan Henderson is in

it. And the dressing room is a happier

camp when Jordan Henderson is in it. So,

I believe that the leadership qualities

of Welbeck, and we've seen him do it at

Brighton.

We've seen him do it at Brighton. We've

seen Hürzeler talk about how generous he

is with his time, how he will teach and

and and almost adopt a didactic role

where he can educate those around him.

He can do that at Chelsea.

He can do that at Chelsea.

Like

learning from Danny Welbeck, who has

been in a dressing room with some of the

greatest players ever.

Danny Welbeck has seen

what Sir Alex Ferguson says in team

talks. Danny Welbeck has seen what Wayne

Rooney does in training. Danny Welbeck

knows what it takes to get to the very

top.

That can only be beneficial to this

Chelsea squad, this young Chelsea squad.

Moises Caicedo is going to be a better

player for having Danny Welbeck around.

Henderson, who has won a league title,

was integral to everything that Jürgen

Klopp has built. I think

Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson won't play, I don't

think. I don't think that's what we're

bringing him in for. There might be

There might be opportunities, there

might be times where he can feature,

there might be moments where he can

contribute. Generally speaking, I don't

think he will.

But

But

there were

Look, lots of people been snide about

this, me included. And lots of people

didn't want him around. But, all of that

stuff that Jude Bellingham and Morgan

Rogers told us about Jude Bellingham,

we're not privy to that. And it has to

matter.

And you know what?

Xabi Alonso is a smart, erudite,

educated man.

You don't think that he has done his due

diligence on Jordan Henderson. You don't

think that Xabi Alonso still has

contacts at Liverpool Football Club. You

don't think that Xabi Alonso has

utilized those contacts, phoned up the

relevant people to find out exactly who

Jordan Henderson is, to find out exactly

what Jordan Henderson is all about, to

understand who Jordan Henderson is, what

he will bring to Chelsea. Will he occupy

the role that we want him to occupy?

You don't think that Xabi Alonso has

done the research on that.

He 100% has, and he has therefore

deduced that Jordan Henderson

is the right man for the job.

This is the right move.

This is the right move. And whatever you

think about this, however underwhelmed

you are,

I think you're wrong.

Anybody that watches Chelsea regularly,

anybody that saw us play last season

when the standards were through the

floor, anybody that thinks about this

group of Chelsea players that were

calling Liam Rosenior a substitute

teacher, that were calling Graham Potter

Harry Potter. Now, I don't

rate

Graham Potter. I would call him Harry

Potter.

But, I'm not an employee of Chelsea. It

is a disgrace that the players were

doing that to their manager. Can you see

how out of order that is? Us doing it on

YouTube videos is very different to the

players doing it. The players must

respect the manager. The players must at

the very least respect the office of

manager.

And they didn't. Jordan Henderson will

now make sure they do.

Jordan Henderson will set the standards

as will Danny Welbeck. So, are they

meant to enthrall you? Are they meant to

be the the transfer-winning signings?

Are they meant to be the blockbuster

Hollywood signing that Morgan Rogers is?

No.

But, will their performances on the

pitch

be the difference between Chelsea having

a successful season and a failing

season?

Maybe not.

Maybe not.

But, can these signings actually be the

difference between Chelsea having a

brilliant season and a bad one because

of what they do off the pitch?

That is a crucial question.

Will Danny Welbeck's goals drive Chelsea

to a league title? Probably not. Will

Jordan Henderson's command of a midfield

in 2026 drive Chelsea to a league title

in the way that it did Liverpool?

Probably not.

But, that's not really the question. And

if you're asking that question, you're

missing the point. The question is this.

Can Danny Welbeck's presence at Chelsea

elevate the standards?

Answer that question.

Can Jordan Henderson's presence at

Chelsea, at Cobham, in that dressing

room

elevate the professionalism and the

standards of Chelsea Football Club? And

if you believe that the answer is yes,

then this is a good signing.

And I believe that the answer is yes.

Chelsea are lacking standards. We are

lacking men. We are lacking fight. We

are lacking tenacity. We are lacking

heart. We are lacking minerals. We are

lacking dedication.

All of those words

all of those words are completely

synonymous with Danny Welbeck and Jordan

Henderson. They know what it takes to

win. They know what it takes to succeed.

And they will demand that everyone

around them adopts those attributes. And

therefore,

this can only be a good signing. Really
