I stopped trying to be good at my hobbies
581 segments
I started cycling again last year in
June. At the time, I had it all planned
out in my head. I will challenge myself
to ride every single day for 30 days.
Well, that lasted 4 days before I lost
momentum.
>> This is day three? No. Day four.
>> Then, 2 days later
>> I was trying to do a strict 30-day
challenge, but we broke the streak.
>> I told myself, "It's okay. Don't be so
hard on yourself."
>> We don't need to be so hard on
ourselves. We do not need to do that,
okay?
>> Just keep riding. It's not a
competition. Just try to enjoy the
process. So, here and there, I would get
on my bike, and I loved it every single
time.
So, I made a new rule.
Just go cycling. Stop focusing on the
numbers. Have you heard the quote that
goes, "Paint like no one's watching?"
Well, I thought I should cycle like no
one is watching. Stop thinking that
every workout needs to be recorded, and
that every week needs a new
breakthrough. I don't know. Maybe one
day those numbers will matter, but as a
beginner, this is why I burn out. It's
like I'm rushing myself to succeed at
something I just started. So, this past
year, I've been cycling, and most of the
time, I don't document it. I just do it
like no one is watching. I have no one's
approval this to but myself. But, on
second thought, I don't even need to
prove it to myself. Not everything needs
to be so deep, and not every hobby needs
to lead to something. Some things you
just do because you simply enjoy it.
Over the next 2 weeks, life was pretty
ordinary. I got a new camera, so I was
playing around with it, and these are
the first videos I took to check out the
quality and which settings to use.
One, I shot a video for his channel,
which will be up very soon, but here's a
snippet of that day.
>> Happy Thursday.
>> Happy Thursday.
>> What a nice Thursday.
>> Your unemployed friend on a Thursday.
>> It's not a bad deal coming here because
it's free admission. You just have to
pay for parking. Parking is a little
expensive. It is $25
if you come before 3:00 p.m., but if you
come after 3:00 p.m., it is $15.
>> Which is actually a better deal cuz even
though it's cheaper
>> Mhm.
>> and it's later, but you get to have the
chance of the sunset.
>> Okay, sushi time.
>> Sushi time.
>> Sushi time.
So, I see people online talking about
2016 like it's a trend and it got me
looking back to 2016. Something about
2016 was just amazing. This was
pre-pandemic. Social media was just
starting to really pick up and we were
getting exposed to a lot of new
information and that newness was really
fun. At least for myself, 2016 was a
really pivotal big year because Wa and I
spontaneously decided to move back to LA
and it was one of the best decisions
ever. Let me just pull photos from 2016.
First of all, can we look at this look?
I had these really thick bangs that I
probably would never get again.
I didn't know what to do with it. It was
super full. Oh my gosh, my apartment.
This was November of 2016. This was my
loft in downtown. If you ever get an
opportunity like that to live in the
same building or next door to your best
friend, just do it. 2016 needs to be
studied. I had a purple moment with my
hair.
>> Yeah, I don't know about that one.
>> have not already downloaded FaceApp, I
think this is a great way to test out a
new hairstyle, a new makeup look, or how
you would look with bangs, or maybe a
perm. I thought this would be fun. I'm
going to open FaceApp and use a picture
Well, actually, let's not use this
picture. Let's do my makeup like how I
would do it back in 2016 cuz I'm going
to add some lashes, okay? This is how I
would typically do my makeup today, but
back in 2016, it was more of this vibe.
Go big or go home with the lashes. I for
sure went ham on the eyebrows, okay? The
eyebrows were square and blocky. They
were dark. Okay, maybe not that dark. It
was like right about there. Let's try
the hair color. I had like the purple
hair, so let's just try that. Oh, girl.
Okay, I would say that was roughly how I
would do my makeup back in 2016. This is
my everyday. It's a much more toned-down
no-makeup makeup. What do we prefer?
Let's see how I would look with a
different hairstyle. In 2016, I did have
the straight-across bangs.
What if I had a bob?
Whoa. Uh uh no. The bangs are kind of
cute. What do we think? You can scan
this QR code here on the screen or check
the link below to get 1 week free of the
pro version. I have not curled my own
eyelashes in so long. Having short
lashes is not easy, okay?
That did nothing.
Hold on.
These lashes. It is not easy for people
with short lashes, okay?
I lost three lashes. This is why I was
getting the lash extensions.
Oh my gosh, I just lost like four more
lashes.
I'm going to try these cluster lashes.
Here they are. Does anyone remember when
I came out with a collab with Elf
Cosmetics? And it was my own set of
lashes. I remember I used to say to
everyone like, "Oh, this is a natural
glam set for the everyday." Those were
far from natural. They were super
dramatic, but at the time I truly
thought that was such a natural glam
look. I still have those lashes. Let me
grab them.
Look at how dramatic those are. I
thought this was the perfect everyday
lash. And I remember I received a few
comments where people told me like no
that's not natural and I'm like what?
What are you talking about girl? Like
this is so natural. It's like perfect
for everyday.
This is taking a lot longer
than I would like but they're cute.
This is very inefficient.
>> Hi Nawi.
>> Um
Oh gosh.
They look so cute. I love them.
I think with practice I'm going to get
it down and could do it much faster but
that took quite a bit but I love it.
They look so cute and natural.
>> I love it.
>> This was my first apartment when I moved
out and it was my big girl apartment and
I felt so independent.
It was especially fun during that time
because where I grew up was a very small
town so there really wasn't much around
especially not a lot of Asian food. You
would eat at like Olive Garden or like
Red Lobster. There wasn't anything
unique especially when it came to Asian
food. Every weekend I remember the
theater would be packed. It would be so
much traffic even trying to get into the
parking lot and it was just so fun. I
really enjoyed living here.
We are trying to make ourselves a matcha
mango latte and that looks pretty
promising. A matcha latte with a cream
top situation. How much would that be if
we went out? Probably like at least
eight. Trying to save money and make
some at home.
>> That is also fun. Just hanging together.
>> Well, you can't really hear the mango on
your side.
>> Mhm, mangoy.
>> Okay.
Could have used more mangoes.
>> It's good though.
>> Mhm.
>> It's good.
>> Next time just more mango puree,
less water in the mangoes. Today is a
cycling day. I am finally going to put
my seat height where it's supposed to be
today. So, for many months now I've been
riding with a very low seat height. It
just feels sketchy to me. Nay. I know in
order for me to improve, I have to be
able to have that full range of leg
motion. Why did I put on my shoes? I
forgot to grab my watch. So, I adjusted
my seat height today. It's a lot higher
than what I'm used to, so I am scared,
which is why I'm wearing long sleeve
head to toe,
just in case.
Last night I stayed up until 1:00 a.m.
watching all sorts of videos on how to
improve as a beginner cyclist. And one
of the first things I saw was that you
have to get that full range of motion.
>> I like the
>> Did you check these drawers?
>> Mhm.
>> My tires?
>> I'll go check.
>> Do you see it? The colors are cute
today. Here she is.
I believe my sunglasses are in here. I
had the seat right about here, so where
like my hip dips. And apparently you're
supposed to have it right about here.
So, yeah. We're going to give that a try
today. I am scared.
The mic is not connected for some
reason.
Let's see.
Is it turned on?
>> How does it feel?
>> It feels okay.
Feels better than before.
Okay, mic is on. It is not too bad, not
too bad. Getting on and off was actually
a bit easier than I expected. Getting
off is harder than getting on,
surprisingly. I thought that mounting on
was going to be harder. Woo, my cardio
legit sucks.
But, it's okay. That's what we are
practicing for. I can't keep talking.
I do feel having the full range of
motion in my legs
is nice.
I'm still getting used to it. Oh my god.
But, I'm feeling the burn in different
areas that I didn't feel before.
The tip of my saddle is kind of poking
in my crotch a bit more than I would
like. I don't know how to fix that. I've
tried fixing it, but no luck with that.
Wall has the electric bike today. So,
he's just cruising and having a great
time. Okay, see, get getting off always
scares me.
Oh, I love when there's just a bit of
downhill. You know what I have a bad
habit of doing?
Ah, that was a stop. Overextending my
elbows. I need to soften them. I also
probably shouldn't ride at rush hour
when everyone's getting off of work and
there's a ton of cars on the road. Okay.
We're at another stop. Okay, I'm getting
off. We're getting off.
It actually does feel so much better.
I'm so glad I moved the seat up.
I feel like I'm using my whole body
more. Like before, it felt like I was
just using my legs, but now I feel like
I'm using my core.
Yay!
I'm so glad I did it. It only took me
like 6 months
to get over that fear.
I'm so tired, though.
But, we all start somewhere. So, I've
had asthma since I was a kid, and so
I would never really do cardio or
anything like that. So, yeah, starting
all over right now in my 30s,
it's hard. I'm not going to lie. That
was barely
a bit of incline.
That's how
weak my cardio is. Even sometimes when
I'm having a conversation and if I laugh
too hard, I would have an asthma attack.
So, yeah, I want to get better.
Thank you.
Do you wish you were on your regular
bike?
>> I think this is nice.
>> It's nice, huh?
>> Yeah.
It's a lot more chill. My mouth is so
dry.
>> Me, too.
Earlier, I tried to get my water bottle
and I'm not used to how far away the
water bottle is. I was kind of I was
kind of freaking out for a moment. I'm
climbing this hill right now
and usually this would really hurt my
hip flexors, but I'm feeling it all in
my abs and my calves.
Oh my god.
This hill is killing me.
One day I'm going to look back to this
footage and be so proud of myself.
Oh my gosh, you know what I would really
like right now? Riding to get In-N-Out.
That would actually be great. Oh my
gosh, hey, there's no queue. But no,
we should eat at home. We have a pizza
at home.
>> Pizza and fries?
>> Okay.
So, when I wanted to get into cycling
again, I was looking between getting a
road bike or a gravel bike. And
ultimately I chose a gravel bike because
I eventually want to try bike packing,
but I know I still have a long way to
go. I mean, for one, I actually need to
learn how to change my tubes. Walt done
it for me and I don't know why, but like
changing the tubes on this bike is much
harder than his bike. Like his just
slipped right out, but this one we
really had to force it.
A fly just went in my eye.
But yeah, there's so much prep that I
need to do. I need to learn how to
change the tubes. I need to know how to
do regular bike maintenance on my own.
So, I think maybe joining a club of some
sort It be nice. I want to go on a bike
packing trip. I have been averaging like
14 miles per hour, sometimes even 15.
But today with the new seat height, I
got 1 mile per hour faster.
It is the little wins, y'all.
Yay.
Oh.
>> Well, you didn't even say
I thought it should.
>> This girl.
Hello.
Leave it. No barking.
Don't do it.
Uh-uh. Leave it. Uh-uh.
Don't do it.
>> No. Let's go.
>> Oh, that was better.
I love spring. They're all nice during
this time of year. I hope it won't be
such a brutal summer, but that is
wishful thinking. Here in LA, it gets
pretty hot in the summer. We'll
sometimes get heat waves that are like
over three digits. I wonder how that is
compared to the heat in Taiwan. Juan I
both agree that we love the lifestyle
there, and I know we always talk about
potentially moving to Asia, and that is
always a dream. That is always a dream.
I think I've dreamed about it since I
was little, and I don't know, maybe
these are limitations that I'm setting
on myself. There's nothing really
stopping us. Like if we really wanted
to, we're not completely tied down to
our jobs, or I should say our jobs don't
require us to stay in one location. The
major issue is that if we lived in
Taiwan, all of our clients that we've
spent many years building here in the
US, I don't know if those partnerships
will still exist. We could still create
content while we're there, but that
would mean a huge huge pay cut until we
figure out working with brands in
Taiwan. I've never been to Taiwan in the
summer, but I've heard it gets really
really humid and hot and pretty
uncomfortable, but at least they're only
a few months out of the year. I don't
know if moving to another country is
necessarily going to solve our problems.
It's like one of those things where
you'll never know until you try. I think
about it every day, but I'm not really
doing anything about it. I think
exploring in your 20s and 30s as well.
As you get older and you start picking
up on more and more responsibilities, I
think inevitably your life gets more and
more tied down to your lifestyle. I'm
afraid. I'm afraid of taking that leap,
but I also know people do it. People do
it all the time and I don't know, maybe
you just have to be brave and just go
for it. Not that I'm not happy here, but
I feel like that is the next step that I
want to experience, but at the same
time, I'm holding myself back. My
family's here, our house. I love our
house. One, I have spent a lot of money
and a lot of effort and love in making
this place our home. Like, do you guys
remember us painting this wall? I mean,
that's so small, but even us recently
getting these new windows, that was a
big investment for the house. We redid
the concrete here and put in rocks
because we wanted to be able to camp in
our backyard. There's so many things
that we have worked towards here and I
love it. But, there's always that sense
of wonder, you know?
Yeah. But, this is a gorgeous home that
I'm so grateful for.
She loves it back here.
She loves sunbathing and spending the
day out here.
Being in the dirt.
Today's a cold, chilly day.
Riding on a cold day definitely beats a
hot day.
Getting on and off the bike was a little
easier today. That's a little win that
I'm happy about. The next thing I have
to figure out is my saddle is really
angled up into my crotch. I'm feeling a
lot of pressure in my crotch. I've
already tried playing with the seat a
little bit, but this is the best I've
got. Wow, look at the trees.
I'm wearing glasses today so that the
bugs don't fly in my eyeballs. I didn't
have the best day today. I stayed up
late last night and I woke up late. I
felt really rushed for work. I had a lot
of deadlines. I knew I needed this ride.
I just needed to get out. And it feels
good.
But tomorrow is going to be a better
day.
I'm going to tire myself out.
Tonight I'm going to get some good
sleep. I'm going to sleep early.
I'm going to wake up early tomorrow and
it's a new day.
When I have multiple campaigns I'm
working on, like right now I have five
campaigns I'm actively working on. Lots
of deadlines, lots of shooting, lots of
editing. I think times like this
is when I get in get really hard on
myself on timelines. As I should because
it's my job. It's on me
to get better about scheduling.
Oh.
Ah.
That wasn't bad.
I really am loving cycling.
This is a form of cardio that I'm really
enjoying. I also notice I need to be
more mindful of the way I talk to
myself. I'll catch myself vlogging and
calling out all these things about my
journey with working out and cycling.
And I just assume that people will think
"Oh, you're so weak." And you know,
people probably think that. But
why should I care?
That's something I'm really trying to
work on. Like anytime I talk about my
progress, I shouldn't compare it to
others. I shouldn't compare myself to
anyone, period. All that matters is that
I came out
and I'm pushing myself.
Wow, such a smooth ride today. It's like
barely any traffic.
Oh.
Yeah, the lights are green for me, too.
Hey.
It feels so good.
Oh, that was a big bump.
Maybe I'll try to pull over right here
and fix it.
Good thing I brought the tools.
Uh.
Uh, still not very graceful. Okay.
Actually, it's already
as far back as it could be.
I'm going to try this spot.
Right in the middle. I don't know, maybe
that would help.
Should I get a proper bike fit? They're
just so expensive.
Okay.
Let's
Let's hope that fixed my problem.
Is this snug?
Okay.
Weehee.
Does that feel better?
Oh. Ooh la la.
You know what?
Okay. I think that's better.
It's not amazing.
I don't know, I guess we'll have to see.
Huh.
Feel like that wasn't it, either. As I
started riding a little bit, it just
felt so uncomfortable. I think I should
just move it back
to where it was.
Maybe I don't move it all the way back
to where it was, but just a smidge. It
doesn't feel right.
I'm realizing now that my saddle
naturally has like
more of a curve up front, so maybe I
just need a different saddle.
I got to get home. It's getting dark. It
doesn't look like it on camera, but it's
starting to get dark.
Try to straighten it. Okay.
Okay.
If this still doesn't feel great, it is
what it is. I'm just going to get home
and
figure it out. My legs are really
overextended. It's like It feels like
I'm barely reaching the pedals.
I'm just going to get home first.
Oh my god.
That's a squirrel.
Oof. Like when I'm reaching for my front
handlebars, it feels like I'm completely
locked out.
Key.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but
in case no one has told you yet, it's
okay to be aggressively average or
mediocre at your hobbies.
Growing up I was conditioned to think
it's normal to expect highly of myself.
But don't get me wrong, being a
self-motivated person is important to
me. But the problem with that is I only
saw failure as failure. Not being good
at something meant punishment, and being
good at something wasn't truly something
I did for me. I was doing it for the
approval and validation from my family.
And I've carried this way of thinking
most of my life. The moment I'm not good
at something, I somehow tie it to
punishment. Like I have to beat myself
down because that was what I was
conditioned to believe. Well, the good
news is we all grow up. We learn to
unlearn things, and if you're lucky,
you'll find something you genuinely
enjoy doing as an adult. And when you
do, don't be so hard on yourself. You
don't need to overthink it.
